Over the past year, I have hired Kerr Home Services to help with a few things -- re-grouting floor tile, general odd repairs, fixing a toilet, and repairing the water-damaged ceiling below that toilet : ) Throughout, Andrew, the owner has been communicative and easy to work with, and he was the only service professional who was able to figure out the source of the water that was damaging my dining room ceiling. Vidal has been the handyman on all of our jobs, and he is absolutely fantastic! The quality of his work is high, he explains clearly what he is doing, he thoroughly "tents" around dirty or dusty work, and he is efficient with his time. Also, today, he helped a neighbor in my building push their car from the parking garage to the street because the tow truck wouldn't fit in the garage! I had a very positive experience with this company. I did check the reviews and found that they were inconsistent but decided to give them a chance based on the positive ones. Mario - someone else labeled his grouting one star - did a great job for me. He put up drapery rods and all kinds of things for over three hours and did a wonderful job. I can't vouch for his grouting, but he is a friendly, hard working guy who I'd request next time I need help. Andrew makes communication easy via email and text and is very accommodating. I'm surprised there are some bad reviews. He runs a very professional business and was very reliable. We hired Kerr a few years ago and our jobs were completed successfully. So we called them again recently to inquire on some basic siding repair issues. Kerr asked for some photos and those were sent. We never heard back from Kerr. A professional company would at least respond to our inquiry. A professional company would at minimum tell us why they can't or won't consider our repairs. We will take our future business elsewhere. We had several other jobs lined up for Kerr but now another more professional company will make that money. read more

This is a delayed post but I hired Kerr after I got a great referral from a friend who used them. Also they were one of the few options that were able to come within 2 weeks of trying to get a company to recaulk, regroute my shower tiles when I had a few days before my things were moved in. The repairman Mario came in and he was nice. He did an okay job on regrouting my shower tiles even though I showed him it was sloppy on some parts and I just had to scrape off some excess on my tiles. He did not do a good job on recaulking in my kitchen sink and the area around the kitchen. It was so sloppy around the kitchen sink and messy. I showed him and he said it is hard to access there but then I saw it smeared all over the granite counter tops. When I mentioned that to him, he just told me that I just need to scrape it off. Why do I have to do that when you were the one to leave the mess? After he left I was still very upset and I told the manager and he sent him back to my apartment. Mario came back a few days later to fix it and unfortunately it did not look much better and he still left extra caulk residue smeared on my kitchen counters again. I would give Mario 1, and the 2 stars are for Kevin in trying to fix it and being so responsive but in the end I wasted some of my money. I ended up looking at some youtube clips and I was able to redo the caulking myself. The caulk residue is still on my granite counter tops from Mario and I do not want to scrape and damage my counter tops but still makes me upset. My friend had a good review so I would just be careful on who they send over. read more

I'm keeping the fifth star in reserve just in case we have another project that can showcase all of their many skills. But we were very happy with their work. Our project was fairly straightforward--a window installation. They did a beautiful job, and I was really impressed by the care they took with our delicate, easy-to-scratch floors. They didn't just put down tarps--they taped down thick paperboard. They managed to get the old windows out without damaging our walls, too. The guys who did most of the work were very pleasant--and apologetic when they were running a little behind because the discovery of a headless corpse and a bomb blocked their access to the lumber yard for a little while. Go figure. I'm not the one who did the hiring, scheduling, etc., but I think Andrew tended to return phone calls quickly, and communication was good. My old garage door broke on a very cold day. Andrew told me he could not send someone out to work in a cold garage when the temp was around zero, but sent Pepe out on Monday morning. When I tried to open the garage door again, the damage became worse. But Pepe formulated a plan. He repaired the door and enforced it so it would work until warmer days when he could use glue to make more repairs. I am extremely happy with his work and Andrew's management. No supervision, incomplete work, delays, bad follow up. A minor kitchen remodel. But what a giant pain. One aspect: install a butcher block counter top. Yes, it was installed. But the edges were left not sanded. Pencil marks were left on the surface. Wood filler is showing. And they took the cabinet drawers apart to install it. I guess it's my job to put them back together? This was like buying a car where everything was extra. Oh, you wanted the counter top finished instead of just installed? And they disappeared at times with the excuse that they had other jobs. That's exactly how I felt: my job was not worth their time. I don't think the owners of the firm ever came over to look at progress other than to pick up a check. Buyer beware: get very specific language about what you expect when it is "done." Don't allow them to give you a loose bid (they underbid the job and I ended up paying as much as the people that would have completed the work well that I didn't choose). And plan on supervising them. Or, better, don't hire them. read more

Andrew installed or fixed so many things in my old house and each was superlatively done. He bought and put in a sturdy and handsome new garage door of metal. He fixed the 1940s exhaust fan in my kitchen. He put in a cat door. He put in ceiling fans and new bathroom and outdoor lights. He and his co-workers put on and take off the heavy storms and screens each year and clean the gutters. The firm also now can put in new kitchens and bathrooms. They can paint your house. The workers are reliable and interesting: a city planner, a musician, etc. They work efficiently, a little cheaper than market contractor prices. read more
