Whenever I'm visiting my family in Ovid, Michigan there are three places that I absolutely MUST go…read moreto: Main Street Pizza, Jellybeans Used Books in Owosso, and Blue Moon Ice Cream.
Not only does this place have like a trillion flavors of hand dipped AND soft serve ice cream, but they also serve shakes, malts, slushies, hot dogs, floats, ice cream cakes, BBQ, and sundaes that are mammoth in size. Seriously, their brownie sundae is like the Titanic, but it's much better because it's made from fudgey, gooey brownie, ice cream, hot fudge, and drenched with whipped cream. Plus, brownies and whipped cream don't sink. Or maybe they do. They sink in my tummy, anyway.
I have heard some people piss and moan that this place is a tad pricey. I find it pretty darn comparable to other seasonal ice cream shops. They are only open during the summer season so they have to make hay while the sun shines. At home in Louisiana I don't have an old school, mom and pop ice cream store nearby. I'm stuck with fro-yo (stupidest word ever) garbage or Baskin Robbins. I'm not trying to throw shade at Baskin R, but they're a national chain open all year round. They serve your typical hand dipped shakes and ice cream. They don't even dish out the arsenal of lunch and dinner food options that Blue Moon does, yet I find their prices very similar. Blue Moon MIGHT be a trifle more expensive, BUT the portions are like five times the size at a national chain creamery. I have yet to get ice cream from this place where the portions weren't extremely generous. You definitely get a lot of bang for your buck. If you can't eat that much ice cream you can share it and ration your money. Woo hoo!
My most recent visit to this delectable sanctum of ice cream in the country was in July 2015. Because we actually had a real, honest-to-God blue moon that month I thought I should have some blue moon ice cream from Blue Moon to celebrate. Ha ha! I hadn't had blue moon ice cream in ages (the flavor and ice cream shop). Believe it or not, we don't have the flavor of blue moon in Louisiana. I have no idea why the hell not. In New Orleans we have bananas foster, a boozy, little delicacy of bananas sauteed in a cinnamon-butter mixture and then ignited with rum, but we don't have any blue moon flavored ice cream? Lame as fuck. So lame.
My pilgrimage to Blue Moon Ice Cream for blue moon ice cream did not disappoint. I was trying to be a good girl so I ordered a small, thinking that I would get a single scoop of ice cream pressed snuggly into my waffle cone. What I received was a waffle cone chalice overflowing with ice cream. It was even heavy in my hand. It was like carrying around a shillelagh of Tiffany blue ice cream, but it was so damn amazing. It took me a while to eat it all, but I enjoyed every fucking second of it. If that was a small, I can't imagine how gargantuan a large is. I would have probably needed somebody to help me lift it AND eat it.
As far as their flavor selection the sky is practically the limit, especially for their soft serve flavors. If you like soft serve you have found your mother ship. They even have flavors such as key lime and peppermint. I practically have to travel to the ends of the earth to find peppermint ice cream period, yet here this little ice cream shop in the middle of bumfuck Michigan has it in soft serve. Impressive!
Don't let the lines outside the place discourage you. This is definitely the hot spot to be on a gorgeous summer evening in Ovid, but the lines move fairly quickly. Once in a blue moon (no pun intended) they have free concerts outside under their pavilion. You can bring your own lawn chair and watch. They don't have the Rolling Stones or anything, but they've had some local Michigan folk and gospel acts perform.
At the end of the season you can score a sweet deal on 3 gallon tubs of their ice cream just in case you need your Blue Moon fix during the long, harsh months of the Michigan winter. It's a pity I can't take a 3 gallon tub back with me to Louisiana. Even though Blue Moon's ice cream is super awesome even the most awesome ice cream melts.
