First I've had two continued dates to gather more info and I believe Chief Judge William Guglietta was hearing my case the first two dates and he was an absolute gentleman. He was understanding and treated everyone extremely respectful and fairly. But my last appearance was an absolute nightmare! I am a middle aged man with a terrible driving record, mostly from my past, but I'm far from a criminal. I work harder than most and am a professional and a business owner but I felt like and was treated like a 18 year old delinquent. Judge Erika Kruse Weller was either having a terrible day or naturally a miserable person. We all make our mistakes and are held accountable for them but I hope for all your sake that on your day of Judgement for a traffic offense that you are not blessed with her offering your sentence because you will not only be handed the maximum penalty but you will be belittled and your day will be ruined by her demeanor. Like I said I never complain or review but I was just awed by this experience. I certainly hope she was having a bad day or maybe she needs some time on to become a bit more humane but I can just say my experience was beyond miserable.

The building was constructed between 1875 and 1878 and designed by Samuel J. F. Thayer in the Second Empire style. In 1975, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it is also a contributing structure to the broader Downtown Providence Historic District. Though the area around it has changed over the years, Providence City Hall remains a constant in downtown Providence. The cast iron and masonry structure witnessed the evolution of Exchange Place into Kennedy Plaza, two hurricanes, and multiple cycles of economic depression and growth. Initially, Providence's municipal government was located in the crowded Market House, across the Providence river. Needing a bigger space, alderman were split on where to put a new city hall. Half of the council lived on the east side of the river, and half on the west, causing a thirty-year struggle over where to put the new government building. Eventually, the west side won and the cornerstone was laid on June 24, 1875. In the 1950s the city's downtown master plan called for the demolition of City Hall, but it was saved and restored, reflecting the city's pride in its historic roots. Many city departments can be found in this building...including Tax collection, Board of Canvassers, Board of Licenses, City Archives, City Council, Public Works, Municipal court, Mayor's office, and much more. I usually go into the building for things related to my tax bill or a few years ago to get my marriage license. Anyway, a beautiful building reminiscing of a French government building in the heart of Providence.

They were about 100 of us just sitting around waiting. All of a sudden they called my number and said "juror 172! Please come to the front." Once I approached they said there's a three year time allowed before you can do jury duty and you were here 2 1/2 years ago. I then asked why they sent me the notice to appear??? The gentleman sitting at the desk said well it was a mistake, but it's your responsibility to keep track of when you were here last. Wow! I was then excused without compensation. Took a day out of work to perform my civil duty, only to be excused because of their lack of attention to detail. If I am ever asked to be a juror again, I am going to make every effort to get out of it.

Nothing on the news about problems with the building, either. (we'd had a big rainstorm the day before, with flooding in some places, and it's at the bottom of a hill). I took time off work for this, plus canceled/had to reschedule a medical appointment and a piano lesson. I was told they would call again on another occasion (no idea when that will be). They could call me again any time between now and next July, I'm still on the hook. I'm just hoping and praying it won't be during a very important trip I have in May of 2024, that I'll have to cancel last minute and lose my money. I hate to be stuck having to pay for travel insurance that will add hundreds more dollars to the trip, due to this uncertainty I'm now stuck living with. I wish I could get lucky and maybe they will forget about me, but I doubt it. They seem to forget that people have lives. I'm semiretired, but I'm not sitting home bored in a rocking chair, waiting for them to call, that's for sure!

Considering that it is located in such a busy spot, the statue is in amazing condition. On the stone base, a bronze plaque lists the main theaters of the war - Philippine Islands, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the USA - and Spanish War Veterans. Atop the statue, a determined looking young man stands in the uniform of the day with floppy had and holding his rifle in both hands (not great trigger discipline). Hostilities between Spain and the United States began in the aftermath of the internal explosion of USS Maine ("Remember the Maine!") in Havana Harbor in Cuba, leading to U.S. intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. The war led to the U.S. emerging predominant in the Caribbean region, and resulted in U.S. acquisition of Spain's Pacific possessions. That led to U.S. involvement in the Philippine Revolution and later to the Philippine-American War. 385 Americans were killed (plus 2061 from disease) and 1662 were wounded during the war. Was I going to lose my license? Would I have to install a device to start my car? I did a quick google search on "refusal of breathalyzer" and Marin, Barrett, and Murphy was the first law firm to pop up. It was after hours so I left a message. I was surprised and delighted a short while later when attorney Stefani Murphy called me back. I explained the circumstances and discussed my driving record with her to see if there were any real concerns. Her calm and professional demeanor immediately put me at ease. Within minutes it seemed like I was talking with an old friend! Stefani was knowledgeable, friendly, and assured me that we had a good case and not to worry. She made it so easy, and her fees were very reasonable. When she had a scheduling conflict, she rescheduled the court date so that she could represent me. She met with me a few days before as I had a few follow-up questions. After meeting Stefani in person, I was even more convinced I had made the right phone call seeking legal counsel. The morning of the court date we met at 9 AM. By 9:03 she had the most serious charges dropped! I retained only the handheld device violation with minor court costs. No loss of license, no blemishes on my record at all! Stefani really came through! Beyond being very competent, she is a joy to talk to. If I have legal problems in the future, I will definitely call Stefani - without hesitation!
