I hadn't been to a church in 5 years when I showed up to The Journey. I was afraid that I wouldn't…read morefeel welcome, that the church would be "cliquey," and that I would be offended by the message. Immediately after sitting down, I realized that I was in the right place. I felt so touched and inspired, and encouraged to explore my spirituality and connection to God beyond the confines of a Sunday morning. As Christian churches go, they have their religious tenants that tend to put them in the "conservative" camp, but as far as churches go, I do believe that this one is fairly progressive and accepting. Things to expect: messages concretely tied into real life, excellently performed contemporary music - some of it original, overhead presentation of what's occurring on the main stage so everyone can see, occasional use of videotaped messages when the pastor is traveling, coffee before the service and donuts after, and kind people all around.

I can't say enough about Pastor Darrin Patrick... I'm your typical "raised in the church" girl and…read moreI've grown so much and met some of the best friends I've ever made here. Darrin's not afraid to give it to you straight, though - so just know that going into it. I'm not saying he's all hellfire and damnation, he's just honest - Christians are spending more time and money shopping for and buying "Christian merchandise" than they are building up their communities and making the world a better place. We've side-stepped our responsibilities and turned our faith into a self-help practice. If you are ready to be challenged, or you're looking for a church that welcomes questions and investigation about what Christianity really is, was and should be... I dare you to come. 9am and 11:15 Sunday services at Tower Grove. They have other campuses too - www.journeyon.net. You can also check out Darrin's latest sermon at the website.

The Carmelite Monastery in St. Louis belongs to the St. Teresa Association, which is a group of Discalced Carmelite monasteries bearing witness to the spirit of the Order of Discalced Carmelite Nuns. The contemplative order's local presence dates to the Civil War. My visit here spurred me to go online to research this often overlooked aspect of St. Louis history. I will note that the Church is a beautiful example of Italian Romanesque revival and the flowers and grounds are extremely well-tended and welcoming. The interior of the chapel includes several statues, an altar, and stained glass windows and was sprinkled with worshipers on Monday afternoon. The space is calm and lends itself well to contemplation. There is also a small gift shop on site. Even though the sign in front said it is closed for lunch from noon-1pm, Joan was kind enough to let us inside. This contemplative space is well worth a visit.

I still visit several times a week and I always leave with feeling a sense of calm. When you enter, the lights are dimmed and it is very quiet. Occasionally, you'll faintly hear the cloistered nuns singing, which is so beautiful. Even if you're not Catholic and just need a quiet place to reflect, meditate, or to just be still for a moment in your hectic life, you might want to visit this chapel.

This is due to the land battle going on and the need the diocese has to rip property that may have value away from parishes because of the priest scandal. The director of music is awesome. There are Latin and English masses available online also to meet the world's spiritual needs during the virus scare in our country. Not sure when church can legally open again due to the virus again. It saddens me that the church is not considered in communion with Rome. Yet isn't ok for people to have their own needs met? I am happy All are welcome to join in communion. I am saddened that the Roman Catholic church does not recognize these things. A downfall is I am not able to walk to the church. I must drive, which because of a handicap, I do not do. The church Secretary has put me in touch with others that can help with this, though. Thank you! They have a wonderful meeting hall, new, improved, and open to anyone who needs the space, for a fee of course. This is to support the church. They also provide spiritual counseling. Father is great. The people in the pews are wonderful and welcoming. Food great at festivals! Did I mention they have a pipe organ? : ) I do find myself saying "I want more of this good thing!"
