Their organization is not the greatest either, as I was finally able to get through to them yesterday, I was told I would receive my prescription refill today-- and to put it lightly, I'm now on 4 days without my daily prescription that is quite dangerous to stop taking, and as of right now, I have been on the line, listening to their line ring for 14 minutes and 27 seconds, to be exact. I guess I will just deal with the life threatening side effects? To make matters worse, this has been a recurring issue, I try to actively avoid visiting my family doctor because I'm very very limited for time as I seldom get days off in the week, and it's just usually more stressful trying to get through of book an appointment, that I avoid it all together. unfortunately I am likely going to have to look for a new family clinic for my family, despite our love for Dr. Adesina. However, I did a presentation in November, 2010 when Dr. Swain was appointed the Cal Wenzel Family Foundation Chair in Hepatology, and I really learned how incredible this man`s credentials are. My experience of him as a doctor, is someone who listens, asks questions, is compassionate, knowledgable and is always honest. Over the years, as alternative health options have been cropping up, I have asked him all kinds of questions regarding my treatment, and he has handled my requests with patience and honesty. Further, in the rare occassion where I have had trouble, he has been accessible. He truly does care about the work that he does, and his patients. He always makes time. In addition to taking on patients, Dr. Swain also holds other responsibilities in his field. He is not just a family doctor--he is a diagnostician masquerading as one. My family has been seeing Dr. Andersson since I was pregnant with my first son, and over the years, his care has been second to none. We have experience with doctors in Europe, and among our family friends in Calgary, one owns a family practice and another works in the hospital emergency department--yet we trust Dr. Andersson with our health above all others. His ability to truly see his patients, listen carefully, and perform thorough checkups is unmatched. His bedside manner is exceptional; he has a gift for making my teenage sons feel comfortable and reassured, and he always takes our concerns seriously. But while all of this has become what we expect from him, it's not why I'm leaving this review. I genuinely believe Dr. Andersson has saved my father's life. After my father suffered a stroke, he spent several days at Foothills Hospital, underwent surgery (stent), and was discharged with no further follow-up. Given that Foothills is known as one of the best hospitals for heart and stroke care, we assumed everything had been addressed. But when I took my father to Dr. Andersson for a follow-up, he immediately picked up on something no one else had. With his usual thoroughness and kindness, he took my father's blood pressure, listened carefully, and without hesitation referred him to Total Cardiology. That's when we learned my father has a bicuspid aortic valve that needs to be addressed--something the hospital had completely ignored or overlooked. And if that weren't enough, Dr. Andersson personally called us after hours to make sure we understood what was happening. He told us, "Listen, they found some things, so they are skipping the middle man--meaning me--and referring him straight to a cardiologist. Make sure you answer the phone when they call, and don't worry, this is all for the best." The fact that he caught what Foothills missed and took immediate action is something I will never forget. Dr. Andersson isn't just a doctor--he is a rare find, a one-in-a-million physician who genuinely cares, is astonishingly competent, and goes above and beyond for his patients. I truly feel sorry for anyone in Calgary who doesn't have him as their family doctor because, as far as I'm concerned, he's irreplaceable. And as for my family? Yes, this is controversial for some…read more I support universal health care, but don't quite understand why it should come at a universal low standard. My dentist calls me every 4 months for a cleaning or checkup. When was the last time I had a blood test.?... 10 years! I know many have adequate medical care through established family practices via standard health care, but some don't. I did not. I think I knew something was not right and when I couldn't arrange a standard medical exam through my MD (after 1 year of trying and two misconnects) then I signed up for Copeman. After the intake questions and battery of exams and tests, it was found that essentially everything was off the charts. I was actually in pretty bad shape. Fortunately things were found early enough, I received some expert advice, and was able to get some lifestyle choices turned around before it was too late. The actual facility is centrally located, has easy off-street parking with nice (modern and clean!) offices and waiting room. There are nutritionists, physiotherapists, exercise kinesiologists, nurses, lab staff and counsellors available, but most importantly, physicians who actually take their hand off of the door handle when they talk to you. For lab tests, samples are all taken on site. This is the way health care should be. It is not luxurious, unless you compare it to the standard squalid waiting rooms at physicians' offices, usually located in dilapidated medical buildings with antique furnishings and equipment from the 60s. How we have come to accept the current state as acceptable is bewildering to me. While I feel a twinge of liberal guilt about the whole thing, this is a complicated issue with no easy answers. I was not willing to die waiting for politicians and government to figure it out. At $4K/ first year and $2.5K/year following (there are also family plans), it is certainly not for everyone. I am a supporter, and while this kind of service is not the answer to our current delivery problems, it just might be part of the solution.
