For those not having been here before, this location is unincorporated - very local; which is fine but use of updated technology with the restaurants would be convenient versus using their websites (not functional, non existent), or calling listed phone numbers not actively working. Plan before coming with food choices. If your goal is to eat out - must go in person. Online ordering, forget it.

It basically lists those who lived in the Galveston County area who lost their lives during the war. Also accompanying this memorial are two benches that sit out front dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Korean conflict. Located directly across the street is a monument to the 10 Commandments that was constructed in 1957.

super cool looking light just off the coastal road headed toward Galveston. it's somebody's private…read moreproperty so unless you know them just admire it from a respectful distance and move along :-) this rendition was put up in1872 - the original and storied iron structure from 1852 was rendered in its entirety during the war of northern aggression - and decommissioned some sixty-one years later. the light did what lights do, directing travelers to safe passage. lighting these things well is pretty important and there'd been a few issues in this regard over the years. the last (and best?) lens and reflector are currently in DC at the Smithsonian. My hotel was right across the street from the beach. It took just a couple minutes to walk from the Seawall to the actual ocean. When I say that we were the only ones there, I absolutely mean it. I think it was the best experience I've ever had coming to Galveston. No loud music, no loud families just calm and quiet. The only people that were around were fishing on the jetty. I was able to catch some rays, play in the sand, dip in the water, and walk the beach without a living soul to bother me. Ha! I am not sure what it's like in the summer, but if you have a chance to go to this end of the beach during the off-season, it is absolutely heaven!! Heads up - no restrooms....at least during the off season. Not sure about the rest.

You'll see a water fountain, a MERR sign (short for merry?) and some statue bust displays of Mr. Hall and Helen herself. It's clear they had some positive footprints on the League City area based on the information written on their bust displays. Small amount of parking, it's worth stopping by for the 5-10 minutes and strolling around forgetting your troubles.

They have shady areas too which was nice since it was so hot out. There are also bathrooms which was much appreciated. They were setting up for a small wedding too which was fun to watch. Lots of family's enjoying the bay, swimming, boating, fishing & picnics. Mellow vibes. Cool that you can easily launch a trailer boat from the sand beach. Dog friendly. My dogs love it! Not the most scenic beach but clean and maintained with $10 daily fee.

This was another incredible find when walking through the Strand Historic District on the way to…read morethe Railroad Museum. The "Absolute Equality" artwork was created by Reginald C. Adams as part of the Juneteenth Legacy Project. It's vibrant and large. It tells the step by step story visually and in writing. It's kind of difficult to capture the writing underneath it in photos unless you break it down into sections. It's easier to read in person. It also happens to be placed at the spot where Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 at the former Osterman Building (now a paid parking lot) on the corner of 22nd Street and The Strand. Just watch out for cars pulling into the lot. I had no idea that the celebration of Juneteenth (Emancipation Day) started here in 1866. Just a year after the General Order was read. It has been an observed state holiday (now a federal holiday) in Texas since 1979. Amazing! It's a beautiful way to commemorate and memorialize this historical event. It's a must see mural! Don't miss it when in Galveston.

I figured since I was in Galveston I would make a stop at an area that is tied to an important part…read moreof history. Juneteenth, starting in Galveston, is a notable area in the city to visit. I wanted to visit here and since we were already out, I decided to drag my friends this way so that we could see where the proclamation was read. As we approached the area, it didn't look like much, but that is probably because of the direction we were approaching. When we got to the site of the building the proclamation was read from we realized the original building was no longer there. However, take the time to read the plaque to give yourself some context to the moment. The area is a welcoming one. Some benches to sit on but the thing that catches your eye is the mural on the building. It depicts the historic moment and give a bit more context to the plaque. I got to see this place in the late evening hours, but I am sure that it is better to see during the daylight hours. It is still an amazing and historic place that you should put aside some time to see.
