From day one when my daughter started at the Academy program during Covid, the focus on safety and proper fundamentals has been clear, and it really shows in the progress she's made. My daughter has been with KMT for a little over a year now (She's been riding since 2020 at a different barn) and I can honestly say that she is a new rider! She's confident, not stressed and truly enjoys riding again. Even her horse, Gumby is a different animal since joining KMT! When we first arrived, he was simply stressed and it showed in the competition arena. Both horse and rider have changed so much and we have the ribbons to prove it. I started working at KMT in November of 2025 as the Assistant Trainer and I am constantly blown away by the quality of the horses, training program, facility staff, and clients. I am so lucky to be able to work with a great group of people. Kelly has a wealth of knowledge and is extremely passionate about passing that on to her students. I have seen every client progress in the few months I have worked here whether they are learning to canter or winning in the junior jumpers. The horses are cared for immaculately and have amazing lives at Maddox Family Farm. They are turned out everyday in a variety of different options including all-weather and grass fields. There is a covered walker and round pen as well as 2 stunning covered arenas, the larger with GGT and Ebb&Flow system so there is always great footing. There are also extensive trails and an outdoor ring. This place is incredible! There are many reasons to go to KMT, either for yourself, or for your kid. I am an adult returning to riding in my 30s after a 20 year hiatus. I'm an anxious rider, but with the wonderful trainers, combined with the excellent horses, I was cantering, going over little jumps, and even doing a schooling show on site in just a couple of months. Every single person here is friendly, encouraging, and makes you feel welcomed. Their lesson horses are as safe and trustworthy as they come. They also vary widely in size, which is great for accommodating just about any rider, from tiny kids to adults on the heavier / larger size. The horses are well taken care of and loved. None of them have more than one lesson a day (maybe two, if it's an easy walk / walk trot only lesson), and they all get days off with plenty of outdoor time with their buddies. If you're a parent looking to get your kid into riding, this seems like a great place to do that too. I had two lessons with junior instructors in their teens who had been with KMT for years, and they were both wonderful and highly skilled. There aren't many places where you can get the safety of multiple trustworthy, well-cared for lesson horses plus a welcoming community, that is great for those who just want to do this for fun as well as those who want to compete seriously. We started at KMT riding academy when they were in Castro Valley. It was the best riding academy we had tried in the area, so we stuck with it. My kid has progressed so much in her riding and it's amazing to watch. We love the lesson horses and the trainers so much that now we make the drive out to their beautiful new facility in Pleasanton. They offer summer camps for kids who are interested in horses too! Definitely worth checking out this wonderful family business! read more

The riding school is ok. Our experience was very mixed. One of their instructors, Amanda is simply awesome. I can't say that about the others. In fact, one of them is quite rude and condescending to kids. I raised this a few times, but was told that it is just different styles. However, one of my friends kids went there as well and had the exact same experience. Once they moved to their new location, we switched to Alliston Equestrian, which is working out much better for us. The trainers are much nicer to kids, the classes are cheaper and more flexible. Would encourage you to look elsewhere. read more

I have been riding for 20+ years, most recently with KMT (for the last 5 years). As an adult amateur and business person, I'm so grateful for a well-run organization from top to bottom. I started this sport in my 30's because of my love for horses. I've ridden with several barns over the years, and I've never experienced such a professional, kind and clean barn. Safety is a priority for the horses and riders, and I feel so lucky and privileged to be part of an organization that is so competent, responsive, friendly and fun. I'm probably not the ideal client because I don't participate in all the "A" rated shows, but I'm treated with the same consideration as a top client. I appreciate riding at a barn where I feel like people care about me and my riding from the trainers, to the other riders, and the parents of the young students. My riding has improved greatly, and I love to see the other students improving and moving on to the next level. If you're considering riding at a barn with a training team for you or your children, this is the place you want to be. If I could give 6 stars, I would definitely hand it over to Kelly Maddox Training! This review is particularly for a special event that my little girl had with them. For her birthday, she absolutely wanted a pony party. Hubby and I wanted it to also be an educational experience, where the kids learned a little bit more about grooming and animal care. We have been to a few stables for lessons before, but Kelly Maddox was just above the rest with her professionalism and experience. We were so glad she and her awesome staff could accommodate us for the party. Planning was a breeze -- she is very organized and responded to email promptly. She was out of town during the event, but she transitioned everything efficiently to her staff. On the day of the event, it started to rain heavily, but she was ready with plan B-- utilizing the indoor stables to accommodate our party of 15 kids. Everything went smoothly despite the rain. We had 5 staff members helping us out the entire time-- teaching the kids how to groom and care for the horse, then teaching them about riding basics, then taking turns riding horses. Every one had a blast and was very impressed with the trainers and their lovely horses. I have nothing but good things to say about Kelly Maddox Training -- they are not only just a top training academy, they are also passionate about sharing their love of horses to others. The one day lesson consisted of walking the horse (Cocoa!), brushing and cleaning him, and then riding Cocoa around their course. The stable was huge and filled with many horses, and even had an area to watch while my wife was horseback riding. The staff was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. I rode with Kelly during my last year of high school and loved my experience so much that I brought my horse home to Shiloh West for a summer during college and, now that I'm a graduate student at Cal, have returned to ride with Kelly again. I've ridden competitively for 15 years and, in my opinion, KMT is one of the best programs in the area. There are many trainers who are either good horsepeople or good business people, but Kelly is both. She, Amanda and Alison are very accommodating to all their clients and their training is fantastic. KMT is open to all levels of riders, from beginners interested in just taking one lesson a week to competitive riders who want to show regularly. I can't fail to mention how beautiful Shiloh West is. The facility is probably the best I've seen in the Bay Area. Trails, big arenas with great footing, lovely brick exterior for the main barn...it's hard to beat! read more
