This might be my favorite name for a horse ever... lol Philly Cheesesteak
    Em W.

Started my journey with BHE about 4 months ago to help with stability in the saddle and to work on my riding muscles for polo. In that time, I've come a really long way in terms of my coordination, my aids, my steering, and my horsemanship in general! When I first started out I did private lessons with one of the lead trainers, Andrea who basically held my hand through everything. I honestly had never tacked up a horse on my own before! I had trained at other places that were more of a white glove service: you showed up and your horse was ready to go. In a way, thats to your detriment because now I'm an adult and I couldn't do it on my own! But Andrea was super patient- she helped me along every step of my way, not just doing it herself and having me watch her, but explaining what each piece of tack does, why we do things the way we do them, safety tips, etc. That horsemanship piece is really what sets BHE apart from other places Ive trained at- they want to make sure you know how to take care of the horse from beginning to end- which grows your confidence and helps you bond with each lesson horse. They all have their own personality and cute little quirks and you'll see all those as you groom and care for them. As much as I absolutely love the horses and the trainers at Blackhound I HAVE to give a GIANT shout to Dana, who is the program manager for the training and lessons. I will be real with you- historically horse people are... not really tech people. For example, websites are usually outdated (think the stick figure holding the construction sign lol constantly "under construction") and theres usually a phone number listed but its the owners personal cell phone and they never answer it because they're out at the barn. OR they have some ancient hotmail email account and never check it so when you inquire about lessons sometimes you just never hear back. That is NOT the case with BHE!!! The website is very sleek and informative and UP TO DATE! Dana emailed me back SUPER fast, very detailed, very communicative, super thorough policies and procedures, everything is on lock at Blackhound! I went on vacation and had to move all my lessons around and she was understanding and helpful and changed all my days and updated the calendar. YES there is a calendar so you know exactly when youre riding!!!! If you are an adult rider looking to come back to the horse world, do not fret there are plenty of adult riders also taking lessons here. One of my concerns was I would be in a class with little 5 year olds because Im just getting back into it, but the classes are structured appropriately and Ive made a lot of new friends! Also- horse people will know: a lot of show stables are seen as snooty, competitive, gossipy, or elitist focusing on winning show ribbons and being the best of the best. That couldn't be farther from the truth here! Dont get me wrong there are some VERY successful people that train here consistently winning huge events and tens of thousands of dollars, I see these champion horses in the main barn and get starstruck but everyone is incredibly humble and helpful! Always willing to offer a helping hand and give advice like when I put my horses boots on backwards lol They have a stellar group of working students that are little encyclopedias of everything horse related, I learn so much just walking and talking with them, they also thankfully jump in and help you tack up and untack until you are 100% confident doing it solo. Theyre also.... really NICE, every single one tells me to have a great ride, or asks me how my ride was after I leave the arena. Everyone at BHE is so welcoming and its such a great community. I cant say enough good things about Blackhound. They do not crowd lessons or overwork their lesson horses so they might be full on clients depending on when you reach out, please be patient and jump on their wait list because a spot will open up and you don't want to miss it! You'll never get my spot though because I'm never leaving sorry! I'll leave you with some photos of the precious lovebugs in the lesson program!

Phenominal! Did I spell that correctly? Does it matter? No. Why? Becuase the people at BHE are the best about everything. Seriously, I can mispell and they would laugh with me. There is no pretensiousness (sp?). They are down to earth and still professional. I trust them to train my kid on their ginormous horses soley because BHE cares. Their knowledge of horses, riding, training, and mentoring goes beyond anything I expected when we enrolled our kids with them. My kid lives for her riding days. She'll even volunteer to clean up. Unheard of, I know. If you want your kid to learn equestrian, this is the place. Need I say more?

My daughter continues at Blackhound - now five years in. I am NOT a horse-person (what's a girth again?) but my daughter has the bug. I have relied on the trainers, staff, and other families at BHE to help me orient myself to this strange and wonderful world. I cannot imagine a better place to learn and watch my daughter grow. We have not had the easiest of introductions - after finally biting the bullet and buying a horse, we saw our sweet Annie injured during a jump shortly after. This sweet mare kept Phoebe in saddle and safe, but has been paying the price as she recovers for the past year (a year!). Kate talked me off the ledge, helped me understand the injury, and put a plan in place for Phoebe. During this time, Kate and the trainers (and Pioneer Equine) have taken amazing care of Annie AND my daughter, keeping her training and moving forward with her passion. It has not been easy, but Phoebe has continued to grow and learn, riding many different horses and being coached by wonderful trainers. Kate is the engine behind this organization and I am grateful. As my daughter nears her teens, BHE is her haven, her happy place, her community. And it has become mine, too.

Sadly this barn has evolved into a place where bullying and gossip is valued over horsemanship and opportunities.

Ask the Community - Blackhound Equestrian

We just want to do a one time riding session for total beginners. Do they provide this service?

Hi Jason- At this time, we do not offer 1 time rides. You may want to research trail riding programs that offer that service. Have a wonderful afternoon!

We got to the gate of the arena and the horse stopped again, and the lady who had helped me get a helmet in the barn yelled at the horse to move( this is where I started to feel nervous because I felt that I couldn't trust the horse.) Marguerite told me that she could tell I was nervous and that it was ok because she puts little kids on this horse.(I was riding in shoes because my boots that I had gotten didn't come into the mail yet, and I told her that but she said that it was ok) so we kept riding but I was confused because it wasn't Marguerite teaching me it was someone else that and I thought she would because that's what she told me over the phone, which is fine I was just confused...the lady who was walking with me around the arena was nice. The lesson ended and we left. Later that day I told my mom that I didn't want to go back because I felt to uncomfortable there and it didn't feel like a stable system...and the other horse place I went to you would learn to brush and tack up the horse, overall just learn horseman ship but here you don't unless to get there early (she didn't tell me till the second lesson) but we asked for a refund and she refused to give a a refund( she never mentioned that she didn't give refunds) she told me and my mom to take after lesson with the boots so we did but i felt pressured to take this lesson.but she said she would charge 120 for the next lesson and give 110 back is we didn't like it. The next lesson came around and I wasn't in the best mood I felt pressured to take this lesson and I just wasn't in the best mood, I got on the horse ( the same one from the first lesson) and he felt jittery to me and I felt uncomfortable I had a weird gut feeling, so I stopped the horse and told her and my mom that I was uncomfortable and she ask why I couldn't answer at the time because I don't know what to say but she just told me to kept going, I felt confused by her instructions because she never told me if I was doing it right, but we kept walking and I felt more and more uncomfortable the horse was stubborn and was focused on follow Marguerite more...we walking around for a bit more and we stopped and she was telling to to look where to want to go then walk so I did. I don't know what happed after that because it happened so fast but the horse had got spooked by a truck driving on the road a threw me off, I landed on my hip ( I was ok but I'm bruised really bad and can't really lay down or sit without it hurting) I got up and talk out of the arena and I was shaking I don't know what happened after that as my body was in shock from what happened. She proceeded to tell my mom that I'm not ready and it was like talking to a 8 year old ( I'm 17) and that riding probably wasn't for me and that I would have still been on the horse if I kept my back straight, and that I wasn't listening and was hesitant to listening to her( I was confused and she never told me if I was doing something right or wrong.) Please be careful when choosing this place ask a lot of questions, because she tends to leave stuff out.

From the very beginning it seemed like an unfit establishment for our family, but wanted to be optimistic. The trainer provided very poor communication on how to find her place and was late on day one. She immediately jumped into defensive communication any time I asked for clarification. She seems very well established and knowledgeable, unfortunately that doesn't translate into her training with first time riders. Trainings are rushed, but ironically she just sits in a chair disengaged from the trainees. I was shocked as a parent and as someone who has no experience with horses when I was asked to prep the horse for riding. Seems extremely unsafe. Once I communicated that we no longer needed the services she became combative and refused to reimburse for the advanced payment for lessons.

I have had none of experiences like those negative ones listed in earlier postings. Here is what my experience has been: A full time manager: helpful, pleasant, always there, listens to my comments and requests. Accounting and other staff always professional and friendly. Three full time workers: they keep my horse's stall clean with plentiful bedding, feed her accurately and in a timely fashion every day. The barn and stall are very, very clean. The workers are friendly, helpful and work so darn hard! I never see them rest. Resident trainers: are all willing to help me out when I need it, are very friendly and fun to hang around. There is always someone nearby to lend a hand, so I never feel like I'll get in a bind by myself. Other boarders: friendly, communicative and nice. (Do you see a trend here?) I've had interactions with many different people at all hours of the day and, generally, everyone is polite and considerate. Additional notes: this is a carefully maintained barn with employees who appear to genuinely care about the place overall. They have lots of fun events, like BBQ's, potlucks, cattle sorting, picnics and fun "play days" for horse and rider. (Have you ever seen a horse bob for apples???) There are plenty of Western and English riders. They host interesting clinics on various disciplines. The board rate is very reasonable and I have fun and feel safe. I have absolutely nothing to complain about! But don't just take my word for it - come and see for yourself. Giddy up!
