Very reasonable pricing, no contracts, tons of class times, and great people. All levels, from beginners to black belts, train here. The environment is very welcoming. Competition is encouraged but not required, and there are many very successful competitors here in different age ranges, weight classes, and belt levels. Focusing on the kid's side for this review: Started about 3 years ago with my 4 year old daughter. We came for a trial class and enjoyed it, so decided to keep training. Another big factor was the female ownership and strong female membership. I wanted my daughter to have those examples to look up to. We have never done any martial arts or wrestling before, so I wasn't sure how either of us would fair. My daughter loves her coaches and they really do a great job of keeping things fun yet disciplined and engaging. They all genuinely care about their students. They make sure everyone is safe and working together in a controlled way. Coach Jen and Coach Kat started her off with Wee Warriors and the basic skills. She has been able to move up and promote into the more advanced classes with Coach Kari and Coach Eli. She also loves helping with the younger kids whenever she can with Coach (and owner) Karen, Coach Eli, or Coach Jen. It's nice that all of the coaches generally work together and help eachother, and there are many other coaches that I am sure I am neglecting to mention who have contributed to my daughter's progress. The lessons are consistent no matter who is leading the class, and generally build on the previous lessons or review skills already taught. Plenty of private and small group lessons available as well for extra training if desired. The more my daughter participates and engages with her coaches, friends, training partners, and other competitors, the more she enjoys being at Genesis Jiu Jitsu. Their plans were the most reasonable around. I quickly found out that at Hwang Martial Arts it is not just another self defense school; it is a life changing experience! They teach that it is not just about self defense, but that it is about a change in how you live your life and act on a day to day bases. Furthermore, they are an integral part of all their students' lives. It does not matter whether your favorite is Mr. Chris, Mrs. Stacy, Mr. Weeks or Mr. Hall because they all have true interests in their student's lifestyle and health. I had a membership to a gym right next to Hwang Martial Arts and passed by it every day, not certain of whether we could just go in. Finally, we visited them. My boys were very interested and I was unsure. When we sat down and discussed this, I found Hwang Martial Arts to be very affordable. Not only that, but my children had no male role model in their lives at all. Now they have incredible male teachers, who demand respect, but at the same time, give positive motivation, teaching the kids the most important principals of being a solid person. Not only did my kids take advantage of Tae Kwon Do, but I attended the Muay Thai classes for fun and exercise. I had no idea that Mr. Weeks and Mr. Hall would change my perspective completely on physical fitness and how much my mind, body and spirit require physical exercise. My confidence level was very low when we started and I didn't see anything extraordinary about myself. All of that has changed drastically in just a year. Now, when I talk about my life, about fighting techniques and working out, people are very intrigued. My passion and zeal for life have skyrocketed. I went from being another single mom to being an extraordinary, tough woman nicknamed "Killer". My youngest (3) does the Little Samurai class, and already knows how to take down, mount, and even submit. I began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu here in July of 2014 and have really seen and felt I have made huge jumps toward my fitness goals (I am down well-over 25 lbs from when I started; have increased strength, and increased my day-to-day level of energy greatly). In addition to that, training here has actually delivered beyond what I initially expected: the training they provide just makes you feel great. The teachers know all the kids by name and freely greet them whenever they see them, even if the teacher is from a class way above where your child is. The admin staff have always been helpful with information/questions, and greet every parent that walks through the door. If you invite some of the teachers to birthday parties, they come. I've never seen a child shy away from a teacher here. In fact, it's the opposite. The kids RUN to the teachers for a hug. The school teaches conscious discipline, which is about using words to express anger, hurt, etc. no kiddo is belittled, degraded or made to feel invalidated. The outside activities are a good mix (Zumba, Kindermusik, (small) animal handlers, dentists, policemen, etc. Every week has a theme (where does thunder come from? What makes popcorn pop? Why do bubble float?) and corresponding activities. If your son/daughter is in school, they have small bus-vans that drop off in the mornings and pick up in the afternoons. The drivers (who are teachers) TRIPLE check those who get on and off the bus. Then they check every seat to make sure everyone is off when the time comes. Whenever there's been an incident at school (twice in 3 years for us), we've received a written report and talked with the teacher about what happened. We've never felt anything but safe in having our daughter attend here. We unfortunately moved into an adjacent school district that is too far for drop off and pick up, but we will for sure be back for breaks and summers.
