Still, there's something undeniably lively about it: the energy, the noise, the constant movement. It's the opposite of remote -- you're never alone, even when you wish you were. Find a quieter corner and the park shows its softer side. Lakes, trees, open lawns, and the occasional heron staring at you like it knows something you don't. It's peaceful, but with that faint undertone of "someone is definitely smoking something nearby." Classic Amsterdam ambiance. That's all very well, but it's not what makes this place really interesting. In one end of the park you'll find the restaurant De Kas in their grand greenhouse and ordered kitchen garden. In the other end you'll find a long range of very different small private gardens and plots seperated by small gravel paths and canals. In this area there's also a larger area reserved for school gardens. The childrens very small plots all look more or less the same, except for the very creative name signs that they have created for their small kitchen gardens.

You can wander through a quiet grove and then, ten seconds later, stumble into a crowd watching someone juggle flaming objects. Westerpark doesn't warn you; it just lets things happen. There's a certain heaviness to the place too, in a good way -- the old gasworks buildings looming in the background like friendly ghosts of industry. They give the park a slightly brooding atmosphere, the kind that makes even a sunny day feel like it has a plot twist coming. It's beautiful, but with edges. The wildlife fits the mood. Birds that stare too long. Rabbits that appear and vanish like they're on a schedule. The occasional dog that looks like it's seen things. Nothing threatening -- just enough to make you feel like the park has its own internal logic and you're only a guest. That's where we'll leave it: Westerpark, doing whatever Westerpark feels like doing, and letting you decide whether you're part of the scenery or part of the plot.

Fantastic Park for little kids!…read more This park is great! We visited Amsterdam with our 7 year old son, and we saw a lot of history and culture. It was good to go to Amstelpark on a warm day and do all the little kid things. We biked to and through the park. We splashed in the big wadding pool, rode the small train through the park, tried to go to the petting zoo but it closes at 3pm (but we still saw some animals), my son played in the playgrounds, and rode on the little rides. He was so happy. (I would say 7 or 8 years old would be the oldest ages that would really enjoy this. Ideal for 3-6 year olds).
