Alternative rock station in the Kern River Valley and South Cehntral Valley…read more This isn't your fathers radio station. It's an indy and pays a wide mix of alternative rock, old and new. You'll become a fan. The 98.1 mhz FM signal can be weak in some areas, but it's worth it. They stream and that helps a lot for me. I never hear any commercials either. Get hooked!

I've never had a radio station here in Bakersfield I've loved more than I do KTOX 98.1 FM! I say…read morethis for a few reasons. I lived in the L.A. area when I was in high school, so I grew up on KROQ, 91X, X1039, later came Jack FM, and I LOVED the variety of music out there. Then I moved back to Bakersfield... The variety here has historically been limited. Sure we got our very own Jack FM 93.1 station for a few years. Also lived as pirate radio for a while. But these stations eventually surrendered to the bankers and began playing non stop country. I was fortunate to grow up on an upbringing of not mainstream music, and healthy dosages of New Wave. I never thought I would turn on the radio and hear Head Hunter by Front 242, or the Killing Jar by Siouxsie and the Banshees. You know those moments when you turn on the radio and you hear that song you haven't heard in years that you almost forgot about? That's KTOX 98.1 in a nutshell. They aren't some glorified multinational advertising agency pretending to be a radio station, it's like being able to get in a time machine and listen to KROQ back in '93. But they also play new music too, the good stuff, not Justin Bieber. Now the reception can be iffy on some days, after all they are broadcasting from the highest mountain in the Kern Valley, but I actually stream KTOX from their website KTOX.COM, and this is better listening than Pandora or Spotify ever was. I like to say that KTOX knows me better than I know myself. It's like having a best friend that listens to all the same obscure music as you. Also it's better than KRAB radio by far. So join me in supporting the little guy. Share this with your friends. Join the movement.

How did I live without this radio station for so many years?…read more I started listening to KRAB radio a little more than a year ago after my favorite channel (Jack.FM) got bought out by KUZZ and started playing country music. It's in my nature to hate country music so naturally I took my radio dial to a different setting. I've known about KRAB radio for as long as I've lived in Bakersfield but I always thought it was oddball rock music that I didn't like and at a certain point in time that could have been true because everyone's taste in music is always changing. Switching from Jack.FM to KRAB was a big change. Jack.FM didn't have a DJ, it was just a few clever catchphrases that were probably recorded before the day began in between ads and wildly different kinds of music. Robin, Scuba Steve, and Danny Spanks are all wonderful hosts that keep every broadcast interesting. I especially like Robin's shows with her mom in the morning where I sometimes find myself laughing out loud by myself on my way to work. KRAB radio also keeps me updated on recent events and even holds their own annual concert called the KRAB Free 4 All. KRAB was already my favorite radio station before I started listening, I just didn't know it yet.

I listened to the Woody Show this AM. Head voice (Woody?) mentions Dem debates coming up. Crew…read moretalks a little about Bloomberg's first debate, old man Biden, etc. Woody (?) says "Yeah maybe you should vote." Female crew member says "Yeah you should absolutely..." Woody (?) cuts her off, says some stuff about how he's So Against PC culture. Then he launches into one of the most uninformed opinions ting I've ever heard. He gets facts wrong (crime is actually down) he misrepresents current events (we're making bad guys out of good guys, coddling children, blah blah blah). Then he launches into a discussion of NFL current events, proving he CAN deal with data and CAN think abstractly. So all the previous? Just being purposefully obnoxious. I wonder if he knows how many obnoxious morning shows KRAB has dumped? Me? Back to streaming my own song list on the commute. Bye-bye Woody (?)

"We're just like your favorite Top 40 radio station, except our Top 40 is 50 years old."…read more That's one of the station identifications used by KZPO Kings Radio (Lindsay-Visalia) that you can hear at 103.3 FM while driving through the San Joaquin Valley. And the S.I. might have been recorded a while back, because Kings Radio plays nostalgic platters from the 1940s, the bulk of its playlist from the '50s and '60s, and then will take you aback with a boss-hitbound disc from the early '70s. One KZPO sponsor: Casa Grande Senior Care, specializing in three levels of assistance. Brilliant niche advertising. It's a computerized format, but you'll be amazed by some of the inspired time-warp segues that can only be attributed to dumb luck; the monkeys-with-typewriters theory. When the house announcer (recorded) makes a rare appearance after a block of 10 or more commercial-free tunes, he names only the last record and artist played. ARRRGGGHHH!! Class...CLASS--ATTENTION PLEASE! Your homework for tonight is to listen to Kings Radio for an hour and explain the evolution of American popular music styles, if any, from World War II up to the early 1970s as influenced by the American culture and international events. (Extra credit if you can show-and-tell a 78-rpm single.)

For a long time, the signal was weak & faded in & out. And for a while It wasn't on the air. Found out later that a 2011 storm knocked out transmitter. In recent years, I was sure that they kicked up the transmission power because the signal stays strong and consistent from King City all the way past Buttonwillow and onto the Grapevine. However, I checked & it's still a mere 300watts. I guess locating the tower up on a 6000ft mountain works wonders. More often than not, I will listen to KZPO instead of my CDs. I hope the station will continue its present music format forever!!
