I was referred to Dr. Kaufmann for shoulder pain due to aggravation of a torn rotator cuff. As a physician myself, I can usually tell when another medical professional knows what they are talking about even if it's not my area. I consider myself a connoisseur with regards to Physical Therapy facilities around Los Angeles County, given my propensity of often being injured. In an effort to spread positivity, I will not be reviewing the countless porous operations in existence around this city, instead choosing to highlight the cream that rose above the rest, Kaufmann Physical Therapy. Recovering from an injury can not only be a physically taxing process, but mentally as well. Therefore, having therapists that not only earn your trust via their expertise on the physical rebuild of your body, but the mental/emotional as well, can not be understated. This type of hands-on attention and care can only be achieved when working with individuals that are passionate about their jobs and not corporatized hands for hire beholden to a mandate that doesn't allow for using their instincts as to what the patient REALLY needs, as opposed to following the script they are required to adhere to. With that said, I can not recommend going to see Jon and his staff enough. You never once feel as if you are another number that they are putting through their cyclical machine in an effort to hit bottom lines. UPDATE: It's now been a few months since my first write up and I wish I could give them more stars. I love this entire team but I am truly grateful for Celina. She has been my shero and my rock during PT. She has helped me rehabilitate my ankle and discover strengthening exercises that I would've been lost without. I'm truly feeling like I'm on the road to recovery thanks to her. She is a complete badass at her job and it shows! I'm not done yet but I am so thankful for how far I've come. They are truly the BEST at what they do. I will be recommending them as often as I can! ---- It's only my first day but I'm already glad I was directed here. I had quite a bit of trouble finding a location for PT with insurance so I was quite relieved that Kaufmann PT was considered in-network after being misguided several times. It is a little confusing to get there if you haven't been there. They do prepare you for the entrance off Huntley dr (NOT Santa Monica as listed in their address). When I called once I arrived a bit lost and confused on my crutches Haden was nice enough to come outside to guide me in. It was just a few doors down on the right coming from Santa Monica. Once I met Jon I felt I reached the right place. He checked my pain/comfort level and we began some light exercises to help me start getting some strength back to my right foot. He was very conscious of my limitations and even the location I was traveling from to get there which is very much appreciated. This place is terrible. First, during the "evaluation" the therapist (John, who I think is the owner) didn't listen to any of my testimonial he simply started twisting and contorting my body to see what hurt, then prescribed treatment that put me in such a bout of pain I was immobilized for a week (in his words: "it's going to hurt before it gets better"). I considered stopping and called to speak with him as well as emailed but never received a response after being told he'd be available to me. Turns out I didn't have "piriformis syndrome" I had an effing 1.5 cm bulged disc which was only later discovered after an MRI and 3 rounds of steroids I had to take after the terrible treatment I received here. THEN to top it off, I called and kindly requested the remaining $75 be waived because they did not deliver on the promise they made to me and made things far worse than when I arrived, to which the soulless collections woman offered a $25 discount (they'd already received $75 from my insurance company). I'm an actor and $50 is what I spend per week on food, and as I tried to reason with this woman, a health and wellness facility should take responsibility for making their patient feel WORSE, instead all she did was tow the contract line that I'd agreed to pay for their services. I generally like PT but when they don't listen to you, and take a hard line on payments instead of doing what's right for the patient, they should honestly be shut down. This place is terrible. Love them, Celina (sp?) is a dream. Her dry silly humor gets me through the pain and hard exercises. I started going for what I thought was shoulder tendonitis. And it turned out it wasn't that bad and just something lesser. So i've been going for like 6 weeks now, I've noticed a difference and they are very accommodating. It kinda all depends on the therapist you get. I worked with Millie who was a student once and she was lovely. But I like to stick to Celina, I can see how some people would have a problem with John's stern like personality but he honestly knows his shit and I trusted my eval and any time he steps in. They have parking, have yet to have trouble finding any in the lot. read more

Very disappointing experience, unethical and rude staff. I came for a treatment due to knee injury. I was in tremendous amount of pain and wasn't very mobile. Evaluation and first session was fine, so was my first therapist. However, after 2-3 sessions I kept having different people working with me, including the administrator. The place was overbooked although they were continue to take new patients, while existing patients were treated poorly without proper care. After 5 sessions the administrator abruptly told me that I could do exercises at home and don't need help anymore. I left confused and very disappointed, since I very much needed therapy. Luckily, I have found another great place on La Brea, where people are professional and are equipped to deal with insurances. read more

Kaufmann Physical Therapy is fantastic. I had a "frozen" shoulder and after a few treatments I'm finally free from pain and can use my shoulder. When I first arrived I could raise my arm halfway. Jon (owner) is amazing. He really knows his stuff. And their cost per visit is reasonable compared to all the other places I checked out. My insurance only covers in-patient PT. Jon and his staff are nothing short of amazing! Everything you could ask for in a physical therapist: attentive, caring, warm, conversational. They remember you and follow up with everything. The massages put this review at 6 stars (ask for Joey, you'll thank me). Physical therapy still largely relies on how dedicated you are as a patient, though, so don't be fooled into thinking this is a miracle cure. But they do their very best to pinpoint the issue and re-calibrate your body to alleviate any pain or tension. I used to go to the Redondo office and I loved it, but unfortunately I moved to SFV and the West Hollywood office was my closest option. I didn't think it could be as good as the RB office... but it is! Everyone is so friendly and helpful and I enjoy going to PT every week. I came here after a car accident, and they have been taking good care of me. I never have to wait long for my appointment, and the setting is well-kept. Jon and his assistants are knowledgeable and kind, and they seem invested in helping their clients improve. I appreciate that they email me my exercises so that I have something to refer to if I forget what I am supposed to be working on in between appointments. The only complication is that the parking lot is a little tight, but there is ample street parking if you can't find a spot in the lot--if this is a concern for you, just make sure to make your appointments on a day of the week where there isn't street cleaning, and parking should be pretty easy. read more

Amazing! That is how I feel after just completing a 6 week course of physical therapy twice weekly for my tendonitis and plantar fasciitis in my left foot. Jon, Joey and John in the West Hollywood office are just fantastic. They are all very friendly, professional and know their stuff. Jon Kaufmann recommended some great tennis shoes and a couple places to buy them. The environment of the office is great and everyone always has a smile or ten for you! I especially like that Jon and Joey (the main therapy providers) took the time to get to know me and my likes, hobbies, activities, etc...this really helped them to tailor my therapy. I would HIGHLY recommend coming here for your PT needs. Although I picked them based on location and Yelp reviews, I would drive from a long distance to get treatments here after knowing how great they are for myself. I awoke this morning with no pain in my back from facet degeneration for several mornings now. This is my story: December the 28th, 2015 I started to feel a little pain just to the right of my shoulder blade. By the next morning it was quite painful; 100% very painful 100% of the time. I couldn't fall off to sleep easily. I woke up throughout the night from the pain. This happened about 8 years ago for about two weeks but went away. So I planned to wait it out. The next day I called my friend who had stage-four cancer and he gave me some of his muscle relaxers and painkillers. They had some, to very little effect. I realized I could no longer wait it out. On Jan 11th my doctor prescribed painkillers and muscle relaxers; however this was not working for me. After a week I was given a Physical Therapy referral list; with due diligence I chose to go to Dr. Jon Kaufmann. Walking into Dr. Kaufmann's office the Monday morning of January 25th, 2016, the pain had been with me nonstop for 29 days and nights. The first physical therapy session was actually a lot of fun with the five persons; clients, therapists and doctor small talking and storytelling while we were being treated. After my third visit in 11 days I am doing what I am told and getting excellent results without drugs. Dr. Jon Kaufmann and his team are compassionate miracle workers. After 30 days I am 90% to 95% consistently pain free: 1. I have lost weight. 2. I am able to do a good workout on a regular bases. 3. I have better posture. 4. I am a happy, pain free, work in progress. 5. I no longer take prescription drugs for pain. I understand that I have facet degeneration. Doctor gave me a daily physical therapy plan and I am making progress. I don't do it perfectly but I am consistent. I now have a 90% to 100% rolling pain free index throughout the day. Before working as a team with doctor the pain was so depilating I could not sleep. I could not do any of the creative work I do for my clients or myself. It's been awhile since my wife had her PT for shoulder issues. This place seemed more like a personal training gym than a Physical Therapist. The PT room is small with out any privacy. We both felt judged upon walking in the door. She wanted to get better and have better range of motion after her surgery. We discussed her insurance and had the green light with the insurance coverage. we asked about the copay and we we assured that it was all covered be the insurance. My wife was still in pain and pain level was not improving. She stopped going and found another PT. About 3 months later we received a bill for $845. We contacted the insurance company and was assured that it was all paid. This PT said the billing was correct, and when we said that we will fax over the Insurance statement. They put me on hold. They never came back on the line. We stayed with this business too long. We found another PT and she felt better in two visits. Don't spend your time here. Not worth the stress. read more

Joan, Carol, and Marvin have changed my life, for real! I came into Kaufmann with so much back pain I had trouble standing up straight and sitting long enough for a 2 hour commute. Now I have started to walk on a tread mill again and Marvin says i will be getting dunked on in no time. (don't know if this is a good thing) Joan is one of the best therapists i have ever had and even when it is a zoo there( it gets busy cause they are good) she takes the time to make sure I am progressing without pain. I came in after a car accident that left my back stiff & in pain. The only thing the doctors would do is give me pain medication. But Dr. Kaufmann went a step further and made me better without pills. He made me feel like I was his only patient. He always took my calls, always made sure he was there when I was there. These guys are great! I chose Kaufmann for physical therapy because they seemed to have more of a gym/sports feel than some of the other PT places in the area. I injured my neck while training martial arts, and within 2 months of PT here my symptoms of pain and radiculopathy were almost entirely gone. Their staff is excellent and they did a great job of explaining everything to me and providing encouraging, helpful service. Also their front desk staff and team handling payment and insurance were sooo patient with my horrible, horrible insurance people who kept denying coverage based on their own error. 5 stars for that alone! ;) read more

Update to my earlier review. When I saw my orthopedic surgeon on Dec. 23, and again on Feb 11 for my follow up exams, he was very impressed with my progress. In fact, he released me after less than 3 1/2 mos. w/o restrictions! Was told I did better than patients who hadn't had rotator cuff surgery. And, my rotator cuff was a mess! It didn't get repaired until almost 3 years after the auto accident, and I had a massive tear by that time, lots of scar tissue, and other problems. I can take some of the credit for keeping up with my excercises, but the majority of the credit has to go to Jon, Joey and Myles! They got me back to almost normal (and back to work) in half the time many people take. read more

I had a similar experience as the client stating in her review that she had an appointment booked that seemed to fall out of their system. I arrived for my appointment, I waited in the lobby for 5 minutes no one was present to greet me. So I walked upstairs to let them know I was here for my appointment. There were three people eating food in the office they told me to go back downstairs and wait. After a few minutes of waiting agian I was told rudely by the receptionist that I had no appointment scheduled. I arrived 10 min late to my appointment. Yes my fault.Their office is tucked in behind Santa Monica blvd and very difficult to find.I tried to call and ask for directions but it was going straight to voicemail. I finally found them, unfortunately the person who I scheduled the appointment with never put me in their system. Physiotherapist took me anyway, very nice of him, but when I mentioned I have insurance and they are listed on my insurance website he immediately said it would take 15 min to check if the insurance can cover the appointment and why I never filled out any paperwork. Hmmmm your front desk never checked on my insurance, even thought I specifically said what insurance carrier I have and I also never received any paperwork to fill out. He said he has no time because he already has 2 other patients. I left and never coming back I guess they don't bother dealing with insurance and just want to get paid straight from my pocket. After six months of training and five weeks before my first Half Marathon I injured my posterior tendon (ankle injury) Jon & John worked with me 3x/ week to get back so I could compete in the race. Jon is a very knowlegeable. He used ultrasound, specific massage and gave me great strengthening exercises that helped tremendously.
