She agreed to prettify my out of town wedding squad - bride + 13. I initially set up blow outs for most of my gals but they ended up wanting up-dos. Thankfully Kate came prepared with a team (all of which were also fabulous). Kate very professionally pulled me aside and asked if I wanted to accommodate and assured me that her team could take on the extra work if it was OK to allow the changes. I hired Kate in the early months of planning my wedding. She was extremely unprofessional and unreliable. She was super pushy on payment and then when I paid her $1200, I never heard back from her until she EMAILED me to tell me that she couldn't make it to my wedding days before. When I was contacting other makeup artists to find a backup days before my wedding they would respond with, "please tell me you're not talking about Kate Tuma." Apparently this is her MO. Kate did my hair for my friends wedding this past weekend. First off, we were all rushed for time, I was told by my friend to arrive for hair by 9:30 and when I arrived for my hair appointment on time, I was greeted with a very rude and impatient hairstylist. She was upset at me that I was "late" but I guess there was a miscommunication from my friend and Kate about the timing. Fine, could have been my friends fault, but it also seemed very unorganized like the information from Kate wasn't communicated effectively. To say that I was rushed through my hair appointment is an understatement. She literally threw my hair up as fast as she could without care for the fact that I spend $90 dollars on this "updo." When she just started pinning my hair back, I pulled out my phone to show her some pictures from Pinterest of ideas I liked and she was really annoyed that I was even showing her my ideas. After the 10 minutes she spend on my hair, it looked terrible. There were pieces falling down, not curled and hair-sprayed so much they were just straight crunchy pieces in the back of my head. There were 100 pins in my hair that could all be seen and it literally looked like a rat nest in the back of My head. Once she finished I asked her to fix it a little and she just proceeded to pull out pieces and make it look worse. So disappointing but I guess that's what you get when you have to pay someone a month before they do your hair. Seemed like she was happy she already got paid and didn't give a crap about how we looked or felt. Her assistant or someone else helping ended up fixing my hair and I ended up leaving with mediocre hair at best. Definitely not 90 dollars worth. Luckily I didn't sign up to get my makeup done too because we probably wouldn't have had time to do it. One of the other bridesmaids paid for both hair and make up ahead of time, only had time to get her make up done, and then ended up doing her own hair and Kate said she wasn't going to reimburse her for the hair service she didn't receive. Talk about horrible customer service! Bad service, bad product and bad attitude from this one. Sadly Would NOT recommend her for your special event. read more

She claimed to have a family emergency yet posted on her social media the day of my wedding about how she was out celebrating her birthday?? Extremely unprofessional! She ended up sending a backup last minute, who was nice, but whose makeup aesthetic is totally opposite and none of our looks turned out as requested. She also never reached out after my wedding to apologize or refund me any $$, because I paid for her work and not some random protege. As if planning a wedding isn't stressful enough, she added a lot of anxiety to it and honestly up until the day of I had no idea if she was even sending a backup. I live in Seattle and planned my wedding in Bend relatively quickly compared to some :) I was apprehensive about choosing a makeup artist in a smaller town and considered flying in a makeup artist from Seattle or Portland. I knew once I spoke with Katie that she was going to be perfect and I am so glad I chose her. She did all 8 of my bridesmaids and my mom and we were all fully dialed in by noon on the wedding day. We had a lot of people in our wedding party getting her services, so Kate brought two people with her on the morning of the wedding. Kate and her co-workers were all a joy to work with and did an incredible job! Every single person was happy with how their hair and make-up turned out. It was also very impressive that Kate was able to stay on schedule and even finish early, which is usually unheard of when it comes to wedding. Kate Tuma was the worst vendor decision I made for my wedding day. First of all, let me say that choosing my makeup artist was something I put a lot of time into. I did a ton of research and finally chose Kate Tuma. I couldn't figure out why my wedding planner had suggested multiple other makeup artists who were more expensive. But, ignoring their recommendations, I went with Kate Tuma because she was cheaper and seemed to do quality makeup. First reason to stay away from her: she is horrible to get in contact with. I flew all the way from Washington DC to Oregon for a makeup trial, and didn't know until the day before if it was still on and where I was going. Throughout the year of planning my wedding I sent many emails that went unanswered. And she is notorious for this (according to my planner). Then I went for my trial. I'm a natural blonde who likes to wear a lot of makeup, but wanted browns and nudes to make it more natural. I left there with red shimmer eyeshadow. On a natural blonde. You can imagine how that looked. So for the next 8 months I anxiously worried about what I would look like my wedding day, and even had my sister practice my makeup if it turned out a disaster. Then, two days before my wedding, I get an email that Kate is canceling on me. You can imagine how upsetting and stressful that is. She said she had a funeral. Okay, totally understandable. But what funeral is planned in two days? I couldn't have been told before this? Again, my wedding planner said this has happened before. Kate told me she would be sending her assistants to do my makeup and would venmo me my deposit back, since I had chosen HER to do my makeup, not them. Her assistant did an awesome job, but this is not her assistants company or review. Its now been two months, and despite multiple emails and venmo requests, I of course have not seen that deposit (which I almost knew would happen). Save yourself the trouble and STAY AWAY. read more

Emailed 10 months before my wedding to inquire about availability and received a response that she was and would send over the contract. The contract never came (not a big deal), so I followed-up and the contract came the next day. After reading through the contract and waiting a couple of months (June) I sent an email with a few general questions and to see if she was still available. My wedding was in October so I wanted to book someone relatively soon. I didn't hear back after a week so I followed up, genuinely concerned that she didn't receive my message. She emailed me back that day, said she had been very busy and would get back to me "very soon". OK. Another 7 days passed and still no response. At this point I am really feeling like she doesn't care about my business. Irritated and concerned about booking someone for my wedding date, I emailed and asked again if she was available, (usually I wouldn't be this desperate but wedding makeup options are limited here). I received another response saying that she hadn't had time to get to her emails and would in the next 2 days. Still, no response to my simple question about availability. I'm not sure what "very soon" means to most people but it in my world it isn't 10 days and 2 wasted email responses. Still desperate, and after finally receiving a response, I had a few more questions. I hadn't ever spoken to her in person or on the phone and wedding makeup is expensive so I had some standard questions such as when the deposit was due and when I could schedule a trial. No response for 11 days. The response after an 11 day wait was that she was not available but her team was and was I still interested? Stunned might be a good word to describe how I was feeling after reading that email. It took over a month to get responses on basic questions and after over a month of waiting I find out she isn't even available. And no, I was not still interested. I'm a rational and realistic person who understands basic customer service skills and this was not it. From the beginning, there was an overall theme of unresponsiveness and I am thankful that I found someone else! Undoubtedly, a one star experience. read more

She was super accommodating and met with me twice before the wedding because I wanted to change my hairstyle. She was extremely professional but also very easy to get along with and was a great addition to our getting ready process since she was so fun to hang out with. My pictures were taken in the morning and I wore the makeup all day and into the evening and it still looked great and felt natural. I first saw Kate's work when viewing wedding photos at the location where I was planning to get married. I don't know much about makeup but her work stood out. Each woman looked beautiful without looking like she had heavy caked on makeup and their hairstyles were gorgeous. When I met with Kate for my hair and makeup trial I brought a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like. Not only did she make my hair look exactly like the photo, she added texture and volume to make my hair stand out even more! When she did my makeup she looked at photos of the makeup I liked and tweaked the the lip color until it was exactly what I wanted. On my wedding day, she did an astounding job. The floral hairpiece my florist created was significantly bigger than the trial hairpiece and she did a wonderful job of placing it my hair. She also did my makeup perfectly and left me with some items to touch up with throughout the evening. She also did a combo of hair and makeup on several different members of my bridal party (ranging from red haired with pale skin to Southeast Asian) and she made each woman feel absolutely beautiful. Each woman who had either (or both) hair and makeup done by Kate made a point of coming up to me afterwards to tell me how beautiful she made them each feel.
