On the day of the surgery, hospital staff complimented me on selecting Dr Kassir as they recognized him to be one of the best. I would urge anyone to exercise extreme caution when choosing Dr. Kassir as their colorectal surgeon. I am honestly stunned by the way I was treated at my second follow- up third appointment, for a debilitating anal fissure. I first saw Dr. Kassir three months ago--just five days before my wedding--when I was diagnosed with an infected anal fissure. Before seeing him, I had gone to urgent care and endured an excruciatingly painful rectal exam. I was told I had a grade-three thrombosed (and actively bleeding) hemorrhoid, and that nothing could be done immediately because of the bleeding. I was given a STAT consult to see a colorectal surgeon. When I arrived at Dr. Kassir's office, I was in absolute distress--not even sure if I would have to cancel my wedding because I could barely walk due to relentless, uncontrollable spasms. His initial treatment plan was one week of antibiotics and topical cream to relax and promote blood flow to the fissure. When I asked what to do about my wedding, he said simply, "take stool softeners and use the cream." That was apparently the extent of his advice for a patient literally passing out from pain on the toilet days before her wedding. By my third follow-up, things had only gotten worse. I now had a growing rash extending almost two inches around my anus and up my cleft. This is especially significant because I had been working nights as a med-surg nurse prior to this ordeal. I haven't worked since first seeing Dr. Kassir. As the three-month mark of my medical leave approached, I made the incredibly difficult decision to formally resign--not because I wanted to, but because I needed to give myself a real chance to heal. My fissure remained open, and the stress of potentially returning to a physically demanding job while still in constant pain was simply not survivable. This injury has taken nearly everything from me--my job, my mobility, and my identity. During this most recent appointment, Dr. Kassir told me (and I quote): "Your anxiety is not helpful. You're too anxious--it's doing you no good." "I'm no head doctor, but you have no reason to be this anxious." When I told him I'd had to quit my job because I wasn't getting better, he said, "This is not something to quit your job over." As if worrying about the very real possibility of having to respond to a Code Blue and starting chest compressions while my fissure reopens were irrational. I tried to explain that I'd actually started anxiety medication last month specifically because this ordeal was wrecking my mental health. But apparently it was validating for him to tell me that my chronic, debilitating condition wasn't a "real" reason to stop working--despite it causing me to lose 20 pounds (I went from 165 to 145 at 6'0"). After examining me, his exact words were: "Oh well, yes, you have some irritation. You need to see a dermatologist. Your fissure is closed." That news should have felt reassuring, but it didn't--because I had seen blood on the toilet paper just two days prior. When I brought that up, his response was: "Well, sometimes they open and sometimes they close." I found that to be a truly shocking statement. I never want this fissure to "open" again--that's exactly what I'm trying to prevent. It's not the kind of answer I expect from a specialist. There was no further evaluation at all, despite my questions about how I got a two-inch area of inflamed, irritated skin. When I asked if it could be a yeast infection (mentioning that antifungal cream had significantly reduced the itching within two days), or if it might be something else in addition, he replied: "Why are you asking me that?" I found that incredibly dismissive and unprofessional. In short, my entire experience with Dr. Kassir was invalidating, unhelpful, and frustrating at every stage. I cannot in good conscience recommend him to anyone dealing with a painful, life-altering condition like an anal fissure. read more

Dr. Kassir was extremely knowledgeable and informative, providing all of the information needed to make an informed decision about having a medical procedure. After the procedure he checked in personally at the hospital each day (including over the weekend) until I was discharged. I'm posting here a review I left regarding Dr. Kassir on Google reviews. If you are considering him as a doctor, please read my experience below of my first and last appointment with him. Wow, I'm reading through these reviews and whether or not you feel Dr. Kassir is a good surgeon or not, his conduct with office visits is horrible. My wife, Noreen, sought out Dr. Kassir to do a colon surgery. We never met Dr. Kassir before he walked into the room. We had spoken with his colleague at the time (which has left the practice), and we scheduled surgery for 8/6 (in case they need to look up the record). The weekend before surgery, my 87 year old mother fell and fractured her back. She lives alone and needed care, so my wife postponed the surgery. Two weeks later we get a letter stating our surgeon is no longer with the practice, so we made an appt with Dr. Kassir. Dr. Kassir was beyond rude, saying things like I'm not doing your surgery, You can just get in your car and travel to Glendale to have the surgery, oh, and this one I don't care what you do outside of this office, I'm the one who DECIDES what I do, and I am not doing your surgery. My wife said she wished she had known how he felt before waiting a few weeks to see him so we didn't waste our time coming to see him, and his response was, Me too. I'll let you judge for yourselves whether this was a professional appointment based on above. We took a few days to decide whether or not we wanted to say something, and based on the reviews that we've read, which we're sure he would never want to hide, it was very obvious to us that he did not render good care to us at our appointment. We're glad for those who have had a positive experience with Dr. Kassir, but the appointment we had with him, having NEVER met him or spoken with him was just plain awful. Please be careful with this doctor, read his reviews and how many people said he was rude. No one should be treated like that. I had an appt after the reception area inquired as to the issue. My appt was with Dr Helen Hall. I waited an hour to see her. I saw her for five minutes and she told me she was not the correct dr for the medical issue I had. My five minute discussion resulted in a bill for $195, out of pocket 106.05. I spoke to the office manager , Leslie Bennett, several times to ask her to evaluate the bill. She refused and threatened to send me to collections. I have no problem paying for the service I receive, but in this case, I do believe it is excessive. read more

Please, please, PLEASE do not go here! After finding cancer and having emergency surgery by Dr. Kassir, I went through chemo/radiation to shrink my tumor. I went back to Dr. Kassir to have the tumor removed and without getting an MRI to see how much my tumor had shrank, he gave me devastating, life altering news. When I started to cry, he told me I should see a psychiatrist, got up, walked out of the room and left the door open! Not wanting to accept his opinion, I got a second, third, fourth and fifth. ALL of who first said I need an MRI, then after I got one, ALL of who disagreed with Dr. Kassir. I am happy to report that I had my surgery with one of the other drs. The tumor was successfully removed and I'm doing great. Had I allowed Dr. Kassir to do my surgery, I would have a very poor quality of life. My career would have been ruined and my health would have been severely compromised. It's truly disgusting that a Dr would/could care so little about a human life they are suppose to be saving. read more

My mother went to Dr. Kassir and because she does not do yelp I am writing on her behalf (and the behalf of our family that went through the experience with her). It was a horrible and even traumatizing experience dealing with Kassir and his office. The friend that recommended him (another doctor) even said the office is not good with communication and the doctor doesn't have a great bedside manner "but he's one of the best." When she first met him he was short and sarcastic; the first words out of his mouth were asking if she "wanted cancer" since she had not had a full colonoscopy (only Cologuard) before the one where they found something. She went in for a procedure and was told something at the last minute before going under that it would be a different procedure. There was no communication about it - more irritation, like medical stuff is complicated and not for the layperson (mind you, she is a very smart and savvy lady, she just likes things explained to her). While she was still recovering post procedure and my sister was waiting in the waiting room, the doctor came out and (without confirmation of the biopsy, which would take days, or my mother's consent) told my sister what he thought was the likely outcome of the biopsy. This shocked our whole family and felt totally wrong. How can a doctor tell a family member something like that without talking to the patient first? While dealing with post-procedure issues while recovering, my mother asked to see the doctor, but he refused to come into the room and relayed info instead. My mom had a wonderful oncologist whom initially recommended both chemo and radiation. She, with the support of her oncologist, opted for just radiation on the tiny targeted area. The radiation worked really well and she is now in the clear (save for the followups she needs to do). Vowing never to go back to Kassir, she decided to try Dr Hall also in this practice, for a followup exam. Dr Hall gave an uncomfortably long lecture about how my mother should have done chemo too because that's what people do and she did not follow the usual protocol which was dangerous and wrong...on and on for several minutes (mind you, she was talking to a patient who responded great to the treatment and was thus far in the clear). My mother even stopped her to say she didn't want to hear about it anymore and Hall continued with how important it is to do chemo in conjunction, ad nauseum. Things like this make me really suspicious of the pharmaceutical industry and the doctors that prescribe their meds. I don't care if these surgeons are good or even "the best" by some standards. They do get a good rating from our family...and you deserve to know exactly what we went through. Best of luck finding a wonderful doctor - and God bless. read more

Compassionate, caring and a great bedside manner. Communicates and explains things so that one can comprehend and doesnt talk down to you, and doesnt rush you out of his office. Having a background in medical sales I have dealt with many surgeons and I can say with 100% confidence he is one of a kind. When I asked him if he was going to scope me I was informed he had already done that. He was gentle and made me feel at ease. I feel safe with Dr. Kassir and know I am in the best of hands. My husband underwent surgery last week and we were fortunate enough to have been referred to Dr. Kassir. The doctor removed a lipoma (fatty tumor) blocking the colon using the daVinci robotic procedure. This involved about a foot of the colon being removed and reattached. Before this happened to us we would not have know to ask for this type of surgery. It is less invasive than the standard surgery thus resulting in less pain and faster recovery time. We couldn't be happier with the results. Dr. Kassir was very kind and very capable, everything we wanted in a surgeon, inspiring confidence and trust which is so important for someone undergoing surgery. I know it might be kind of odd to put this kind of review on Yelp, but we just wanted to get the word out that there are safe and effective alternatives to the standard colon surgery. read more

After a rough six months medically, I was referred to Dr. A Kassir for surgery. Being sick and needing surgery is a scary process for anyone. Professionally, I had accompanied many patients to surgical consults and frankly, I (internally) critiqued their patience, bedside manner, communication, and compassion. It is a fearful time and often patients don't know what to ask or what is important and sadly, medical professionals are not psychics. I have had patients complain when their concerns were not anticipated and am aware of some who then reacted quite negatively to this. I had two pre-op visits with Dr. Kassir. I came prepared. He answered my questions and elaborated on some. He was patient and when I hesitated after one of his responses (I was actually formulating my next question) he repeated his previous answer just in a slightly different way. One of my petty peeves is comments re "size". What is "small"; the size of a pin, a marble, or a golf ball and compared to what? After 5 years with two different specialists, I got the best, most detailed information about my condition, including an absolute understanding of the physical size of my issue. I had done my homework regarding Dr. Kassir's skill and surgical reputation and I was pleasantly surprised with his office interaction. Highly skilled people often do not do well talking to us "commoners". We don't speak their language, don't understand the technicalities, then often frustrate them and cause them to be impatient. Communication is so important with any medical professional and I was really impressed with Dr. Kassir. He was patient, spoke in understandable language and was reassuring. I felt very comfortable heading into surgery with my greatest anxiety being that the gardener might hack up my plantings while I was hospitalized. My surgery was successful and I am recovering nicely. His staff is friendly and efficient and appointment waits were minimal. As my recovery has progressed I have had additional concerns and questions and have gotten immediate responses. While nobody wants to have surgery, I have been quite pleased with the process and care I received from this Doctor and appreciated his communication skills as well as his surgical skills. For those who find themselves in a similar situation with any Doctor, come to your appointments fully armed with questions (it's hard to remember when you are anxious) and, if possible, bring an unemotional advocate who can write things down for you. read more

I had 2 appointments scheduled with this pompous Dr. and took time off of work for these appointments and at the last minute he cancels on me even when I was already at his office. I saw Dr. Kassir for about 3 minutes when I had problems with constant hemoroids in December. He examined me and prescribed suppositories. He did not do any biopsy, slide or tests of any kind. I then was billed for a "surgery" in his office. Do not use him unless you are willing to pay "surgery" fees for a quick exam. I am very dissapointed. The first thing Dr. Kassir ever said to me was "Why are you here?" For a moment I was taken aback. However, I quickly realized that this was an excellent first question. My response told him where my head was and what my expectations were. He explained the diagnosis, the proposed surgery (a laparoscopic, robot-assist colon resection), and what to expect from the surgery. I had previously written an entire page of questions to be asked. Most of these were answered during his presentation. He then asked if I had additional questions. I asked them and received direct answers to all. Dr. Kassir again asked if I had additional questions and was prepared to take whatever time would be required. I particularly appreciated the doctor's respect for my time , since he did not waste it on banal conversations about weather, sports, etc. At the hospital, Dr. Kassir and/or an assistant visited me each day. I had no problems to report. I had a very quick recovery after the resection. I was able to leave the hospital after a few days, and have had no problems since returning home. I have been a patient of Dr Kassir's for over 3 years. I called this morning because I am having an issue which is painful and needs some prompt attention. I was told the earliest I could get in is 2 weeks from now. I was crying and asked what could be done and was called back 6 hours later telling me nothing could be done for me. When I asked if a prescription for the medicine I had been prescribed in the past could be called in I was told that because I had not been in for 3 years this was not an option. So, your office is punishing me for being healthy and not needing your services? NICE. I would have to wait the 2 weeks.
