The recently opened Brasserie menu seemed better value and more generally appealing. The location is good, in the yard behind Odell's hardware store. In addition the main restaurant area there is some outside seating in the paved yard area. Shortly after we arrived we benefitted from someone from the kitchen, presumably the owner, swearing to his staff asking them if they'd asked the customers if they had used the car park. We gather their had been a problem with a customer leaving their car late, at which point the car park is locked. Whilst we may have benefitted from the warning about the car park, we didn't appreciate the language and it got the evening off to a bad start. The meal started with a complimentary amuse-bouche: cold courgette with some herbs and spice sprinkled on top and a small flower. Unfortunate the soup, and the heavy home-made roll that it was served with, were both disappointing. Our first course was Brie Parcels (£6) which had rather soggy pastry and a very over-dressed salad and scallops with cod cheeks (£9) which was much more successful. The mains were a cap rump steak (£18), which was nicely cooked with triple-cooked chips, and a double cooked pork dish (£11) was nice, but rather dry in the middle: the accompanying sauce was good, but unfortunately there wasn't enough of it. Puddings (£7) included a rather nice soufflé, but the pastry on a pear frangipan was thin at one end, thick at the other and very chewy. Overall it was a disappointment, which seems a shame: some elements were very good, but the food was disappointing in places and at these prices that shouldn't be the case. We'll probably come and try it again in 6-12 months time, and hope it has got into its stride.

First time I have a take in roast pork dinner, with a root vegetable purée I just wish there was more if, the second time I had fillet steak cooked to perfection so the knife glided through. Will defiantly return.

The Calcutta Brasserie is an excellent and interesting Indian restaurant in an old building which I…read morebelieve is a former church, monastery and boy's home during the Second World War. The building (see pictures) is quite something and certainly makes the dining a little bit special, and fortunately the food lived up to the impressive surroundings. Complimentary popadoms with onions and chutney arrived whilst we waited for our starters. This ended up being the most disappointing part of the meal. The popadoms themselves were fine, but somehow none of the relishes served with them quite worked: they were all just a little bit too messed about with. A nice straight forward mango chutney and raita, in addition to the more exotic variants, would have been welcomed. We started with Tiranga Samosa (£4.50): 3 somosas containing potato and peas, chicken and red peppers, duck with five spices; I had Zafrani Murgh Tikka (£3.95): chicken tikka both were excellent. For mains we shared Hyderabadi Dum Biriyani (£8.95): braised basmati rice cooked with chicken (or lamb) in a pot sealed with a Naan bread so it cooks in its own juices (see picture) this was intriguing as it looked rather like a pie with the earthenware dish and the Naan lid, it tasted mild but very nice. The other main was Kosha Mangsho (£7.95) slow cooked lamb with aromatic hot spices and caramelised onion and ginger this was medium spiced but extremely tasty and with plenty of meat. We added to this a Mushroom Combo (£3.95) side dish of chestnut and English mushrooms sautéed in garlic and caramelised onions and a Garlic Naan (£2.50). Everything we ate, with the exception of the aforementioned relishes with the popadoms, was very good, certainly one of the best Indian meals that I have ever had. The service was a little disappointing, we were served a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon which was white instead of red, but at least they changed it happily and quickly. So far I've only called in once, but if the first visit was anything to go by I will return... Update ** Having now been a few times, I'm reviewing my initial review! Whilst the main meals are USUALLY good, the food isn't consistent, sometimes it dissapoints. On one trip we had a pudding that was called Creme Brule but was more like a custard with sugar on top - they hadn't put it under the grill or used a blow torch on it to give it the crispy top. So I'm downgrading it from a 4 to 3* with the warning that it is quite variable...

The Chicken Tikka Masala tasted just weird, CHicken Korma far too sweet and Chicken Dansak just filled with tasteless frozen vegetables. The Dhaba Chicken had a nice authentic Indian flavour, Kosha Mangsho was a tasty lamb dish and the Kori Gassi was a lovely South Indian curry with ginger and coconut cream. The Bombay Potatoes were nicely spiced and tender. Unfortunately the rice was too dry, the onion bhajis were bland and overall the food was incredibly salty. I was awake all night with severe dehydration. The saltiness is a major put-off, and the food quality is very variable.
