Your Yoga Studio - Shower area at Your Yoga Studio

Great little yoga place…read more I have wanted to try Yoga for a long time and then went to Your Yoga Studio for this. Everyone is really nice and after 2 classes i am already hooked. There is a lot of Hot Yoga classes, where you really get your sweat on, the teachers are really good and even as a first timer, i did not feel as though it was to complicated, as they are great at making it simple.

I had never tried yoga let alone hot yoga when my friend persuaded me to attend a class here a…read morewhile back. To say I was apprehensive is an understatement - I was terrified. The thought of being in a sweltering hot room with a load of strangers, getting myself into extremely challenging positions was not something I relished but hey, I'd heard how much weight you could lose from hot yoga and my friend had raved about it so I thought what the hell. On entering Your Yoga Studio which is tucked away down the not particularly salubrious Wood Street (adjacent to Bold Street so if you go to an early morning class the detritus left by the previous night's revellers can be a bit off putting) I was immediately struck by the cleanliness and lovely calming atmosphere. I suppose you'd expect that from a yoga studio but I was honestly really impressed by this. The decor is calming yet funky and the layout of the whole place is excellent. The staff at YYS are extremely friendly and knowledgable and you can tell they practise yoga which bodes well. It doesn't fill you with confidence if you go to a gym or similar and the staff look as though they're about to keel over from a heart attack; not so at YYS I'm happy to say. I'm delighted to say that not only did I get through the class without expiring, I actually came out of it feeling amazing and determined to continue which I have. There is a pretty good variety of classes from the dynamic 'vinyasa flow' to the slower paced 'yin' style but I would say most abilities are catered for. I certainly didn't feel out of my depth as a total beginner. I must say a GIANT gold star to Your Yoga Studio for the cleanliness of the place; it really is spotless. As someone who really struggles with public changing areas in gyms and swimming baths I actually found changing and showering here a pleasure and that's saying something! I would say that Your Yoga Studio is probably at the higher end cost wise as opposed to other places but you definitely get what you pay for and if you're serious about hot yoga then I would say a membership at YYS is an investment. Just a tip though - mat and yoga towel rental is £1 a go but you can buy your own yoga mat for a tenner from Home Bargains and get a yoga towel for the same from Amazon which will ultimately add up to a saving if you go often enough. Namaste!

Set just aside from the magnificent Georgian Quarter, the Wellbeing Centre is the number one place to de-stress and escape from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. I remember attending a 90 minute beginners Yoga class when Liverpool iced over in February. My shoulders and neck were sore from being at a computer all day and I was cold to the bone. I paid my five pounds, attended a fantastic class and fell flat out asleep at the relaxation period towards the end of the session. I woke up feeling warm, de-stressed and relieved. I've since been back for four or five sessions and would recommend everyone to give the Wellbeing and Yoga Centre a try!

Even the name gives you that warm fuzzy feeling, meaning it's already working before you've stepped inside. Here you'll find all manner of alternative therapy and yogic exercise to get your teeth into. The Wellbeing Centre itself provides all kinds of massage including Indian Head and Swedish as well as homeopathy and aromatherapy, chiropody and podiatry, lymphatic drainage, hot stone therapy, osteopathy, reflexology and even nutritional advice and life coaching to name but a few. Meanwhile the Yoga Centre, which overlooks a pretty and peaceful garden, consistently holds classes via a weekly timetable and offers gentle and friendly introductions into the exercise, as well as a balanced, welcoming attitude. If you're looking to get away from it all and de-stress in the city centre, look no further than here.

The swimming pool is only half size and the equipment is fairly limited, however there is a great community atmosphere on this gym, unrivalled by some of the big name gyms in Liverpool. Although the gym is fairly small, it has running machines, cross trainers, a free weight and machine weight area, a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. You can purchase protein shakes and smoothies, you can also attend plenty of classes such as Pilates and Yoga as part of your membership. You can opt for a personal trainer if necessary for motivation once or twice a week. Membership is inexpensive, paying £30 for six weeks as a student membership! The staff are excellent, when I joined they wrote me a full training programme as part of my induction and have been nothing but helpful ever since. The location is also brilliant, being bang in the centre of town! I would recommend going in the daytime if you want to spend a long time on the machines, as the gym busies up between 6-9pm! Or get there when they open at 7am Mon-Fri if you want the gym/pool pretty much to yourself!

For the low low price of £20 per month, you get to play about with a really nice range of up-to-date equipment, including numerous cardio machines and a wide array of weights. Plus, from my first impressions, it seems to be the gym of choice for a wide range of people - from housewives and bus drivers to students, meaning you won't be made to feel inferior by a load of model-esque sculpted gym bunnies when you pull your flabby form onto a treadmill (or at least, this has been the case in my experience anyway). The Spindles Gym also appears to have a decent sized pool, a sauna and (rather pleasingly) a steam room, so you can sit and blast all of the crap out of your pores whilst listening to their piped CD of various Liverpudlian bands Greatest Hits. Indeed, I would even go so far as to say that Spindles is possibly the only place you'll be treated to Echo and the Bunnymen's 'Killing Moon' whilst you're on the cross trainer. Rather intriguingly, Spindles also offers something called a 'Russian Shower' on their leaflets. I've yet to discover what this is, but preliminary queries appear to suggest that it involves having a bucket of freezing cold water thrown over you by an overweight and decidedly grumpy slavic person. So you might want to avoid that.
