Kaplan paved my residential driveway early this summer. My review of the company can be summed up in two categories- Work Quality: Five stars! Communication: One star. They did great quality work, paved my driveway in two days of on-site work, and left the job site looking clean. However, getting to that point was a bit of a pain. I had a really hard time getting someone on the phone who could talk to me about scheduling the work or exactly what work was going to be done. I ended up wasting a lot of time making calls and leaving messages because I couldn't reach anyone at the company. Perhaps it was an abnormally busy time, but that was my experience. They did a great job on the driveway itself, though. It looks really nice. read more

Driveway looked good but had footprints all over the sidewalk. The email from Kaplan says to reply with any concerns and they will respond 'immediately'. 6 emails later and still no response. I'm disappointed with the footprints but even more disappointed with the lack of response from their customer service.... not even an apology. read more

This is the most confused business I have ever seen, Karen in the office is clueless, she doesn't return calls, doesn't have a clue to whats going on even though she is in charge of the office and scheduling. Made the appointment a month in advance to have my driveway completely redone, I set it up so it would line up with the brick company I had doing the border. On the day Kaplan was supposed to be to my house to remove the old driveway, no one showed up. When I called and talked to Karen, she first told me that the crew called in sick, I asked her how does an entire crew call in sick and then she told me they had scheduling problems and took me off the schedule on Friday yet no one called me to tell me that. Now this messes everything up, I spoke to Mike and he stepped up and got a crew there the next day for the tear out, yet couldn't promise when the would install. He then called me Wednesday night and said the village inspector would be there Thursday and They would be there Thursday afternoon so we needed to get the inspector out first thing on Thursday, When I called the village first thing Thursday morning to see if they could come out right away, they told me the inspector would have been there Wednesday, but when they called Kaplan on Wednesday morning they got an answering machine and no one ever called them back. Long story short, Kaplan was able to pave my driveway on Friday since the brick company was coming Saturday and they got the jib done, the only problem was they were supposed to leave the asphalt 8 inches from the edge for the brick guy to final cut and install the border and they asphalted the entire driveway. The estimator Dave told my wife it looked better that way and we shouldn't do a brick border anyway, REALLY??? Thats not what I asked for! I think the work they did was good, I just think they have major organization issues and add much more stress to the situation than need be, I would be hard pressed to refer them or use them again!! read more

Kaplan Paving may be the worst-run business I have ever encountered. After missing 2 scheduled dates last fall, they finally sealed our driveway on a day that it rained and predictably, the job was a complete disaster. After several unanswered calls, I finally got someone on the phone and instructed them not to cash my check, which they agreed to. That turned out to be untrue as well, as they did cash the check anyway. Fast-forward to April of this year, when they promised to come back out to re-seal the driveway. It is now July 5th, they have failed to show up on 3 different promised dates, and today had the audacity to pave the driveway across the street and leave a flier advertising their services at our front door. The customer service/callback time is a joke, the reliability is worse. I would not recommend that anyone do business with Kaplan. read more

Had my driveway sealcoated and cracks filled which initially looked nice. The problem was that any cracks no matter how small split open down the middle when they dried. Contacted Express (Kaplan) to get this remedied, and they said they would be out 7/27 (the next week). No one showed up. Contacted Express (Kaplan) again and they rescheduled for 8/3, which they showed up for. They sealed some cracks (not all), but now my driveway looks terrible as the crack filler is on top of the sealcoat. On top of that, they left lumps of crackfiller in spots that I had to flatten out myself. Paid the invoice, but not happy. I wouldn't recommend this company. Who fills cracks over the sealcoat? It looks terrible. Not worth the cost or frustration. Plenty of less expensive places that do a better job. The one good thing I do have to say, is that the sealcoat itself seems to be quite good. read more

I selected Kaplan because I thought the company ran a good business. Was I ever wrong! I paid over $20k for a driveway last year, and it is disintegrating before my eyes! I have called them, sent them photos, and have only received an email saying that will get back to me. It has been weeks since I last heard from them. Save you money and time and do not use Kaplan. Had Kaplan lay an entire new driveway (huge driveway); didn't slope the center correctly, so that now the rain/snow collects into a big pool in the middle. Called and emailed for MONTHS to have job redone, only to have excuse after excuse, and then totally ignored me. DON'T USE THEM!!! Kaplan did a good job replacing my old driveway. They were the cheapest and most through of my three quotes that I got and the new driveway looks great! I had to push back my install date because of work being done on my road and they were accommodating the entire time. I took off a star because they didn't replace my old culvert pipe that ran under my driveway. I understand that it might have been extra but I wish they had at least quoted it as an option. read more

We had our driveway done last year and they talked us into upgrading the base so my husbands pick up truck wouldn't leave dents. They told us we could park a semi on it and it wouldn't dent. Not true! They have yet to send someone out to look at it. For a warranty we have to get it sealed and they didn't come the scheduled day and didn't call. Steer clear of this company read more

THe actual paving part of our project was a 10. Our new driveway looks wonderful. THe fellow who came to do the estimate was knowledgable and not pushy. KAplan probably has the worst customer communication I have ever encountered. IT was very frustrating. That being said they were the only company who offered a 3 yr warranty. SO, I'm glad it's done and work turned so well I would recommend,them to a friend as long they knew about the ridiculous communication. read more

We called Kaplan to have them come out and seal our driveway. We scheduled the service 2 weeks in advaned for a weekend that we were going to be gone for a baseball tournament so no one would have to be bothered with not being on the driveway. We come home from the the tournament and nothing was done. I called to ask what happened the rude woman said they got busy and to deal with it. She was very uncooperative with the rescheduling so I asked for a manager who seamed uncaring about missing the appointment. After rescheduling they couldn't give me an exact time and showed up at 7:00AM unannounced for the work. The workers were great and friendly but the office leaves sometjing to be desires. I referred them to some friends and they even blew them off. I will not be using them again or referring them to anyone else!!!! read more

Most reviews are about their lack of service. I encountered some of the service issues also, but the real problem is the quality of the job. There are bumps in the driveway and the surface started to break up is less than a year. Now it is three years later and the driveway looks like it is 20 years old. A paving consultant I hired tells me Kaplan didn't prepare the base adequately and did not compact the top layer to the correct density. The consultant also states Kaplan should have done the first layer one day, let it dry overnight, and done the top layer the next day as backing the trucks over the first layer before it is cooled destroys the integrity of the first layer. My conclusion and the consultants conclusion is Kaplan really lacks the technical knowledge to do a long lasting quality job. They are, however, low cost. Another lesson in one gets what one pays for. read more

Joe Revelle and Annette were easy to work with. We have a gravel driveway and this winter did the worst damage ever in 40 yrs leaving deep ruts. The Kaplan crew showed up on time, they were courteous and efficient, and did a wonderful job fixing our driveway with approx 2" crushed stone rolled until thoroughly compacted. This is the first time that I've ever written a review (felt compelled to do so as a warning for others). We've lived in the Chicago area for 15 years and this is by far the worst organization that I've ever dealt with. On four separate occasions that have failed to sealcoat our driveway. They schedule it, have you move your cars, and simply don't show up. If you try to call them, it goes directly to voice mail (and can take weeks for a call back). We recently built a new home and used Kaplan for our driveway. Lars and his team were great the whole way through. After we noticed an issue a couple months after moving in, Lars came out to inspect and discovered that our driveway was included in a group of driveways that had received a defective batch of asphalt from their supplier. Without hesitation, Lars notified us of the issue, apologized, and set up to redo the entire driveway at no expense to us. While we weren't excited about the process of tearing up and replacing our driveway, Kaplan completed the job in a very efficient, yet careful way with minimal disruption to our lives. After having negative experiences with the majority of the sub-contractors on our project, Lars and Kaplan paving were a breath of fresh air. Highly recommend. read more

I read some of the reviews here prior to hiring Kaplan and have to admit i was a little nervous, but Kaplan was given to me as a referral from one of my best friends who works in Libertyville and i totally trust him as he does a lot of roadwork himself. This company does not follow through on its promises. Kaplan installed a new driveway for us and sold us on the seal coating to "extend the warranty" and to improve the life of the driveway. We scheduled with them to come and do it 3 times around 6 months after the initial install but they neither showed up, nor did they call to re-schedule. The fourth time we called them to ask what had happened and to reschedule, they had stopped working for the season. In the new season, we called early to get set up for them to come. They are repeating the pattern of not calling us and not following through on their promises. They told us the reason they failed last year was their model was flawed. It has not, apparently been fixed this year. We are still waiting for the warranty service and the seal coating. read more

Every step of the way, from the quote, to the scheduling, to the work itself, Kaplan Paving and affiliates were timely, professional, courteous, answered all my questions, and replied promptly to communications. I'm no asphalt expert but to me they seemed to work quickly, efficiently, and the result is a quality and attractive new driveway. After removing my 19+ year old driveway found the sub-base underneath the asphalt had to also be removed . With bad weather and the additional work required of excavating and replacing the sub-base the job took longer than initially expected. My concerns at final inspection were addressed and I have my new driveway! read more

i made an appointment 8/9/18- job started in october after i called 3-4 times. it wasn't weather related they forgot to schedule the work. the incomplete work was unsatisfactory. kaplan's ad states: "1- prime oil spots, (2 -blow off rocks and debris from driveway, (4-fill major cracks with thick trowel grade crackfiller/ not spider cracks, (5-neatly brush apply one coat of commercial grade sealer. items #1-4 not done. #5) was the only item done, nothing else. called twice got v/m and no further response from kaplan regarding the complaint. the driveway was almost finished when i came out and saw no cracks were filled, when i asked the serviceman, i was told the filler was no good it would dissapate fast and i was better off with just using the sealer, it would work better than the crack sealer i paid for. (bait and switch)? as to payment, i never received an invoice nor was i contacted regarding my complaint. until, 12/9/2018 when i received a letter threatening legal action for payment. this was the first communication from kaplan since the incomplete service. they in my opinion are a most incompetent organization. incomplete job, no prompt responce to calls, if any. as in the past 21 years, prior to this experience, i will choose to spend my money with other than kaplan. read more

Buyer beware! Used Kaplan / Express Sealcoating to seal my driveway this year. Came out on 9/12/17. After they finished and left, I noticed that there was sealcoat all over my garage door and cedar trim. I have made many attempts to talk with their staff. When I actually get to talk to someone I am promised that someone will either call me back or come to my house to clean up their work. It has been 2 weeks and still nothing. I will be disputing the charge on my credit card. read more

It was time to have my driveway replaced, and I have a large driveway. From Brenda to Jason to all who performed the work it was 5-Stars. The team was helpful from beginning (obtaining the village permit) to end (repairing some cracked tiles). The driveway looks great (a Unilock neighbor commented he did the wrong thing!) and any time I need re-sealing or anything else, the promptly respond. We had Kaplan Paving install a new driving last fall. Overall, we thought they did a decent job. We were told we had a warranty on this new driveway providing we used their seal coating company. They told us to call in the spring to schedule a appt for seal coating. It is almost July and we still haven't had our new driveway sealed. The seal coating company connected to Kaplan has blown us off 4 times. 1st time because of rain which is understandable. However, I had to call them to verify they were cancelling. The next 3 times I was told by a Kathy that we had a appt on a certain day and each of those times, no show/ no phone call. Obviously Kaplans warranty means nothing to them and needless to say we are very disappointed with this company and their customer service. I would not recommend them. read more
