I hired Express Sealcoating, a Kaplan Paving company, to fill a hole in my driveway and seal it. In September 2019, Express Sealcoating filled about 70% of the hole and left me an invoice. Since then, I have left three voicemails and one email asking them to complete the work. It's now late October, and no one has contacted me. DO NOT USE! This company has some of the worst customer service that we have seen in a long time. Someone took the time to come to our house and leave an estimate on postcard. The estimate said that the work would include filling the cracks in our driveway before sealing it. We called and scheduled the work and were surprised when the crew left that only half the work had been completed. We tried to speak with their people for months to get them to come back and finish the work, but they refused and wanted to be paid full price for a job half done. Instead of helping to find solutions, then just kept arguing with us and finally threatened to report us to a collections agency if we didn't pay. We paid them to keep them from wasting any more of our time, but we are now trying to let everyone know not to use them. I think it is only fair to update my review here. After finally connecting with ownership here they did their best to identify the issues with billing and work with us to our satisfaction. While I think there is still improvement to be had, I do feel better about the experience. IMHO all businesses and especially service providers will eventually stumble. It is more important how they treat the customer when that happens. I know I posted a tough review previously but they did try hard to find a reasonable middle ground and for that I'm grateful. read more

I would highly recommend using Kaplan Paving! The appointment scheduling for the free estimate was very flexible for my schedule and the rep who came out was thorough and gave an estimate on the spot - very professional and even offered financing! The crew who came out to do my driveway were on time and did an amazing job! I love how the brick border along the driveway gives it a nice curb appeal. Received many compliments from the neighbors. At the end, I was surprised that they even had a "final walk through" just to make sure the job was done right which gave me and my husband assurance that we picked the right company! read more

This is the email I sent to Kaplan Paving canceling my job. I do not want your company doing my seal coat. I have lost confidence in Kaplan paving's sealcoat division. I sent 2 emails to you and a phone call which were never responded to when you scheduled my driveway on a day when there was 80% chance of rain. My initial call to your company went unreturned for over a week before I spoke with your company, but I schedule with Kaplan anyway. That should have been an indication of your service. Today your men showed up with no advance notice as you said I would get. They also were not prepared to trim the grass off the driveway as you said they would. There trimmer was not working. They did offer to do it without trimming the grass away from the driveway. Again do not do my driveway done. read more

So disappointed in this service. Hired Kaplan to seal coat our driveway in late July. Finally scheduled the seal coat date in August and paid the agreed upon invoice fee. No one came on the August date to perform the work. It took several calls and an email days later before someone responded saying they got behind due to weather. After four weeks of calls and emails, the seal coat was done in late September (2 months after hire date). Even more frustrating, I received an invoice for an additional $35 over agreed upon and paid contract amount for crack repair. Is there a rating below 0? Driveway replacement was challenging, but adequate. Then informed us guarantee only works with a sealcoat contract. Accepted sealcoat contract at 2.5x normal sealcoat cost. Tried to schedule an application. They would not return messages to schedule for several weeks. Finally they did application minutes before a thunderstorm. Sealcoat splashed onto our garage door and house. They use a 'special' sealcoat (justification for price and guarantee), but it does not come off our garage with standard commercial removers. I call to ask them what to do and they say they will take care of it if I send pictures. That has been 2 months now and they will not reply to my emails or phone messages. read more

I hired this company because they had so many good reviews which is why I am so confused as to why I have been treated so poorly by them. I had my driveway completely redone. This required several visits to my home. On all 3 occasions they requested access to my garage. I didn't have a problem with it if it made their job easier but on 1 of their visits, a worker went into my garage, found one of my folding chairs and set it up. I felt it was highly inappropriate that they looked around in my garage and touched my belongings as if it was their home. Had I been asked for a chair I would have gladly provided one. I called the woman I had been dealing with and left a message. She responded the next day and agreed it was unprofessional and said she would forward my concern to the proper person. No one ever contacted me about the incident. A couple of days after their final visit and paving I walked onto my driveway to look it over. I found that they somehow pushed my gas meter into my house and also pushed in a bollard I had there to protect it. They also damaged the bottom of my siding in several spots. I called to complain about it and the woman asked me to send pictures which I did right away. She said she would forward it to the quality control department and the owner. I had to call the gas company and have them come out to check that the meter was okay. Thankfully, it was not leaking gas. A week went by and all I got was an invoice sent to my email with an extra charge of $85.58 for a fuel surcharge that wasn't in my contract or ever discussed with me. I called again to complain and let woman know that no one ever contacted me about this mess. She assured me again that she would contact the owner and let him know. Well apparently he could care less because another week has gone by and it is clear that they have no intentions of fixing the damage they did. Their customer service is extremely lacking. With this said, the driveway looks okay minus the damage to my home. I am very dissatisfied with this company and the way I have been ignored. read more

Here is why I used Kaplan Pavement Services this past May 2016. Believe it or not, back in May 16, 1996 (I have that invoice in front of me as I write this review) I used Kaplan Trucking and Paving Co. Inc. services to remove and replace my existing asphalt driveway. Well, after 20 years of use, I decided that I could not continue to sealcoat my asphalt driveway anymore. So I Googled Kaplan and was surprised to get a hit after 20 years. I later found out, if I have my facts correct, that the original Kaplan Company was bought out about eight years ago. Well, I made contact with Kaplan Pavement Services. From the person who answered my call, Karen, to the person who came out to appraise my driveway, Lee, I was impressed with the way I was treated. The crew that came out to remove and replace my driveway asphalt also impressed me by doing a great job as well as taking care not to ruin the grass around my driveway and then cleaning up after they finished. I believe they went beyond just concentrating on repaving my driveway. Before they started the job, Kaplan called our Village to have them lower the sewer and to remove a root stump so that rainwater would flow off my driveway. Taking everything into consideration, I would highly recommend Kaplan to my neighbors. read more

I had around 8 driveways done and most had the wrong pitch and did not meet the garage floor properly causing water to drain into the garage. They could have done an acceptable job, they had the ability, but they don't care. They are not going to fix anything once you call them back. They don't care if their work is acceptable or not. A year after our driveway was paved and I tried to contact Kaplan for sealcoating to extend the warranty they offered. Absolutely no reply or communication from Kaplan. After trying for MONTHS just to speak with someone I got nowhere. Seems to me they don't care about business anymore. Can't be bothered to answer a phone or return a call, then they probably can't be bothered to pave a driveway properly anymore, or seal coat it properly. Very expensive paving work. You would expect a high quality product. But no, had to beg and plead with people to come back and fix the work. Many visits to fix the original work, they make you feel bad to ask for a job to be done right. Who knows if this work is done right now. After the snow was on the ground and I didn't know they had come , they wanted to be paid. Said if I didn't they would take me to collections tomorrow. So they wanted me to shovel snow to inspect their work. I have paid them, as if something goes wrong in the future , I doubt they will be back to fix it. Update Oct 2017 - Kaplan finally called ME back the day after I left a negative review on Google and updated my negative review from last year on Yelp. Not sure why it had to come to that. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable. It goes to show that these reviews may actually work in getting attention to your problems. At any rate, they came out about three weeks after my last post and looked at the one year old driveway they installed Spring of last year. Billy said it did need to be fixed on both sides of the driveway. He said they would use infrared heat to heat up the cracks of the driveway and then seal coat the whole driveway. I just had it seal coated this Spring so having another seal coat was good I suppose. I was told they will be out in 2-3 weeks and would call me the night before to let me know they would be coming so we can remove any cars from the garage. It was about 3-4 weeks when one morning at 8:30 AM I hear knocking at the front door. The Kaplan crew was here. Luckily I was home so I had to rush around moving cars out of the garage and off the driveway. In true Kaplan fashion, communication seems to be the frustrating underlying issue. Billy did indicate they have been so busy this year which is why there's been issues with communication. I didn't buy it as I had the same issues with them last year. Seems to be the thing to say with unhappy customers. Anyways, I'll close with this. My overall experience with Kaplan was not good. I didn't ask or expect anything that wasn't promised to me in a contract or paid for. Communication seems to be the biggest frustrating issue I had with them and that's too bad because though I had some cracking on my driveway this year, the driveway itself seems good and looks good. The repair job they did looks good and you can't tell there was an issue. That in and of itself would not have made me upset as things like that can and do happen. But the lack of respect to it's customers who just want reasonable customer service is what leaves me shaking my head in disgust. This all started back in July when we scheduled Kaplan to sealcoat our driveway and road (private road). They did not show up when scheduled, then when they did show up they only did our driveway, not the road, because they didn't bring the right equipment. The job was finally completed, but they never sent an invoice for us to pay, that is until December. We received a past due notice for the first invoice we received, followed 3 days later by a letter from their lawyer. All is paid, but beware! Do not use this unreliable company. After doing my driveway with this company( I was satisfied with the look of my driveway)they advised me to do the sealing coat on my new driveway before the winter. We agreed. Only one guy to came to do my really long driveway.He did not clean the driveway from the leaves, he was so quick that before I knew he was already done, After I came to see how he did it, my fence, mailbox, porch,and garage doors were splashed with black paint and even the leaves were painted black on the driveway as well. I have called so many times that I lost a track of time. It's been 9 months and nobody came to clean the splashed things and redo do driveway because it looks awful with marks of the leaves all over it Poor communication for sure! The worst experience I have ever had with a contractor. I paid 18k for a driveway a year ago and it began to crumble almost immediately and from the first day it was installed developed large puddles that stuck around days after it rained. I have literally been begging them to stand behind their work. They have acknowledged it is a problem that they are responsible to fix but in over a year have not come out to fix it. I Recently Purchased a Driveway from kaplan,It was by far the best experience I had compared to the other companies which I will not name. It started with Lauren who scheduled me to see Mark. He was there on time, and was prepared to have a conversation with me about my driveway and my concerns. One would think that this is normal but the other companies didn't show up or knocked on my door, they just mailed me the quote. which I thought was wrong. Mark answered all my questions and made me feel comfortable that I was buying from a quality company. They did such a good job I recommended them to my Employer. They did an awful job and made a lot of promises to make fixes and did nothing. Driveway is cracked along most of edges. There are already puddles where cars drive. Their are lumps in driveway. After almost 18 months of getting the run around they said it is because i drove on edges and didn't back fill..Never addressed significantly puddling and bumpy drive. they just kept passing me from person to person and coming up with a new excuse. And you have to pay them 100% upfront to get on their schedule which is also a scam. I have plenty of pictures if you and emails to show that this isn't just some "angry" person.
