It spans 36 acres and is known as Little Rock's first public park and dates back to 1892. It was renamed after WWII hero, General Douglas MacArthur, in 1942. Given its historic significance you will find a number of historic markers and memorials on the park's grounds. The park seems like they periodically maintain it, but that some areas have been lacking lately. There were areas of the park's grass that were not mowed and trash was overflowing in parts by the pond. This park is home to a very nice playground that has some realitivley new equipment that includes a saucer swing, a huge jungle gym with slides, an interactive game station, some percussion instruments, and a small jungle gym with a sway fun glider and a slide. The area has the mud free rubber surface on the ground and there are blue awnings over some of the equipment to provide shade. Of course there are benches at the playground for caregivers to sit on. The benches have shade coverings as well. It is a very nice area as I mentioned. The park has a stocked fishing pond and there were tons of people fishing while I was there. And I saw many of them actually catching fish. You will see an amphitheater and a fishing pier along the pond. The park also features a nice paved trail to run, walk, bike or hike. You can also use it to take your fur baby for a walk. Just be aware that much of the trail is in the open and has no shade. Other park amenities include a gazebo, a shelter that is available to rent, Contemplation Gardens, a restroom facility, tons of green space and a bocce court. The green space is suitable for most field activities including soccer, football, playing catch, or tossing a frisbee. This is a very nice park that is located on the outskirts of Little Rock. You could easily spend a half of a day here or more. It could use a tad bit more maintenance though. What makes this park more special is its historical background. It is rich with history. I would classify this as a destination park and highly recommend checking this place out.

Really close to pinnacle mountain state park for a great (and challenging hike). Only 20 minutes from the city and 5 minutes from a Kroger. It's also very pet friendly.

Plenty of neat animals and fish to see. A little gift shop as well. This place is free, which is honestly one of the best parts (in THIS economy!!). Perfect stop for elementary-aged kids to explore and learn. It's clean and there is plenty to see. Great find in downtown Little Rock - you just have to take the stairs or elevators behind the co-working space to access it!

This park should not be mistaken for River Front Park which is on the opposite side of the River on…read morethe South Bank. It is on the North Bank and does not have as much to offer. Similar to Riverfront Park, this is a long linear park that has a nice paved trail that runs along the river. There are Seven interpretive panels commemorating the Cherokee Trail of Tears along the trail for people to read. You will find a lot of green space here to have a picnic, play a sport, fly a kite, play catch.... The park used to be called North Shore Riverwalk Park, but its name was changed to what it currently is. There is also a bathroom facility at this park, however, it is only open during special events. You will also find benches on the side of the paved trail that overlook the ocean. These benches are good for taking a load off and relaxing. Trust me, I know from experience. This park mainly serves as a location for joggers/walkers to workout. It also is the park of choice for special events. I came here during a carnival. It was a perfect venue for that. It is easily accessible by the Junction Bridge and has metered street parking available. The park is home to the US Submarine Veterans World War II Memorial and an illuminated sculpture titled Beacon of Peace and Hope. And visitors are treated to a panoramic view of downtown Little Rock, which is even more cool at night in my opinion. Even though there is not much to this park it is still pretty nice and well maintained. I liked it there and would have probably still visited if there was not an event going on.

I'm a down and dirty girl! Oh, not in the way you think!…read more I like to get my hands and nails dirty. I like to dig. I like to discover and see what is beneath the surface. Way down! Just as far as anyone has ever gone. Let's look at the midden. The *WHAT* you ask? The midden. The dirt with *leftovers* in it. Leftovers? Like meatloaf & spinach & biscuits? Well, yeah . . . . kind of . . . leftovers like from folks who went before us. Leftovers like flint chips and sherds and anything that didn't decay that someone threw out their back door! And let's look at the rich black dirt (midden) that has all sorts of decayed matter in it . . . . like meatloaf & spinach & biscuits! You did know that you can tell when someone has lived on land by the richness and change in color of the soil, right? On my first visit to Toltec Mounds (a misnomer - this site really had nothing to do with the ancient Toltec culture) I knew that we were going to find rich midden. Its flat country. Very flat. Then out of nowhere rise these beautiful mounds. All built one basket-load of dirt at a time. Several of the mounds remain. Today it is just a few miles southeast of Little Rock. Archeologists believe this was a large ceremonial & governmental site. Who really knows for sure? Those who do are long gone. It was occupied between AD 600 to 1050. That they do know for sure. All sorts of ways of dating the site. Tree rings, carbon dating, etc. This was a large village with an earthern embankment surrounding it. Yes, I spent a lot of time here getting my nails & hands dirty. This wasn't my first love, er site, but it was one of the best. I helped excavate several pits on Mound A, I used my cartography skills extensively mapping each pit, I screened for minute artifacts, I surveyed, I washed and catalogued artifacts, I killed a thousand mosquitos and I made lifetime friends . . . all at Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park in Scott, Arkansas. When I was there it was still farm land. That was before it became a State Park. Before many folks knew its true value. Before we put test pits in. Before there was a road. Before there was a museum and a visitors center. Before anyone really knew there had been a thriving Plum Bayou Culture there. Yes, I got my nails dirty here. Real dirty. I used my trowel and line level. I learned what a cottonmouth was here. (Not the way your mouth feels the next morning!) I learned what humidity is like when it is just so thick & heavy in the air that sweat doesn't dry off your skin and you never can get cool. I learned what mosquito repellent is really for. I learned to work in tandem with a teammate in sifting a large screen. I learned it is only marginally cooler in the shade than the sun when it is this hot. I learned how good a cold beer tastes in the evening just before bed. I learned to take salt tablets. I learned that it is far more fun to dig in the dirt than to sit around talking about how boring life is with manicured hands. Make memories now. Who knows, you may meet the love of your life in the next test pit or at the evening bonfire or out surveying. I did. And he/she will have dirty fingernails too. And you'll both know more about prehistory.

The new park is amazing! And there is a beautiful lake right next to it…read more The grounds are pretty full of garbage though, so bring a bag and some gloves to help clean up the environment. The pier has also deteriorated, and has some holes in the walking area.
