The park, named after a for parks and recreation director named Julius Breckling (not listed on this Yelp page with his name), was huge - 39 acres huge. Lol. The cons were: - trash scattered sparingly on the ground - sus characters - some areas that were worn out/ run down - parking fees (see below) - no restrooms available - none that we saw Pros: + amphitheater + dogs on leashes okay + playground area + sculptures throughout + shaded sitting areas + splash pad (there were two of them, but only one was operable that day) + terraces + walking paths + water fountains + nearby pedestrian bridge + The Little Rock monument near the bridge Parking was $3 per hour for 8 hours maximum - enforced 24/7. I'm a down and dirty girl! Oh, not in the way you think!…read more I like to get my hands and nails dirty. I like to dig. I like to discover and see what is beneath the surface. Way down! Just as far as anyone has ever gone. Let's look at the midden. The *WHAT* you ask? The midden. The dirt with *leftovers* in it. Leftovers? Like meatloaf & spinach & biscuits? Well, yeah . . . . kind of . . . leftovers like from folks who went before us. Leftovers like flint chips and sherds and anything that didn't decay that someone threw out their back door! And let's look at the rich black dirt (midden) that has all sorts of decayed matter in it . . . . like meatloaf & spinach & biscuits! You did know that you can tell when someone has lived on land by the richness and change in color of the soil, right? On my first visit to Toltec Mounds (a misnomer - this site really had nothing to do with the ancient Toltec culture) I knew that we were going to find rich midden. Its flat country. Very flat. Then out of nowhere rise these beautiful mounds. All built one basket-load of dirt at a time. Several of the mounds remain. Today it is just a few miles southeast of Little Rock. Archeologists believe this was a large ceremonial & governmental site. Who really knows for sure? Those who do are long gone. It was occupied between AD 600 to 1050. That they do know for sure. All sorts of ways of dating the site. Tree rings, carbon dating, etc. This was a large village with an earthern embankment surrounding it. Yes, I spent a lot of time here getting my nails & hands dirty. This wasn't my first love, er site, but it was one of the best. I helped excavate several pits on Mound A, I used my cartography skills extensively mapping each pit, I screened for minute artifacts, I surveyed, I washed and catalogued artifacts, I killed a thousand mosquitos and I made lifetime friends . . . all at Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park in Scott, Arkansas. When I was there it was still farm land. That was before it became a State Park. Before many folks knew its true value. Before we put test pits in. Before there was a road. Before there was a museum and a visitors center. Before anyone really knew there had been a thriving Plum Bayou Culture there. Yes, I got my nails dirty here. Real dirty. I used my trowel and line level. I learned what a cottonmouth was here. (Not the way your mouth feels the next morning!) I learned what humidity is like when it is just so thick & heavy in the air that sweat doesn't dry off your skin and you never can get cool. I learned what mosquito repellent is really for. I learned to work in tandem with a teammate in sifting a large screen. I learned it is only marginally cooler in the shade than the sun when it is this hot. I learned how good a cold beer tastes in the evening just before bed. I learned to take salt tablets. I learned that it is far more fun to dig in the dirt than to sit around talking about how boring life is with manicured hands. Make memories now. Who knows, you may meet the love of your life in the next test pit or at the evening bonfire or out surveying. I did. And he/she will have dirty fingernails too. And you'll both know more about prehistory.

Highly suggest calling ahead of time to warn them if you're coming in with a big group. We didn't want to bombard them and surprise them with a group of 11. We also all got skill checked because all 11 of us are climbers so we made that part easy on them. The gym is decent with a variety of grades. With it being in a small town they are limited on 11's and there was only one 12 while here. Again it's understandable but their 5.10 routes were pretty good and did well with working with the limited height they have. Their boulder area is small but they provide a good variety of climbs. The only things I had a hard time with was: - Their holds aren't the newest, which isn't the problem, but because the holds are covered in chalk/rubber, it was hard to really determine which holds went with which routes. I'd suggest that they avoid setting similar looking color routes next to each other. -A lot of the routes seemed like they were made for the reach for tall people. I'm not sure if that was the intention or not but I'd suggest keeping an eye on that for shorter climbers or providing a few more foot jibs. Nothing can become more frustrating then doing multiple routes where some can't be done cause you can't reach it but everyone else can. Overall I did enjoy the gym, just some minor things that don't break the gym but they're things that can help make climbing life a little bit easier.

It's right next to the river which is great for taking my German Shepherd to fetch tennis balls out of the water. Met lots of friendly people and their dogs. It would be nice if the park had more grass. Seems to be more dirt and pebbles. Definitely has a decent amount of shade for hot summer days. Has plenty of benches and picnic tables to sit at. We stayed at the watering hole most of the visit. My boxer enjoyed laying in the pool to cool off. It's nice to have a place for my pups to get some interaction with other dogs and meet some nice people. Hopefully I'll be making this a regular visit.

The dog park is a little hidden. Enter through the east gate nearest the golf course. Make the first right toward the shady tree area. The sign says volleyball but it's not. It's a one way. The park was expanded in 1937 for WWII training and that one is called Camp Robinson. Some remnants of that activity still exist and there are warning signs everywhere about unexploded ordinance. So that's pretty awesome. Renamed in 1950 after local physician William Burns, the park has all sorts of outdoor activities including soccer fiends, tennis courts, TWO golf courses, basketball courts, a disc golf course, baseball fields, trails, picnic areas and picnic pavilions. There are a few public restrooms throughout the park and it is linked to an RV Park and Campground. They even have an Arkansas River boat launch! We were here for the covered bridge and found it, but that is separate. In the meanwhile, it was nice to wlak around the park, sticking to the trails. The warning signs were plenty warning for us!
