This was our second visit here, and it was just as spectacular as we remembered. This time, we stayed right in the park at Watchman Campground, which I highly recommend. From the campground, you can walk to the Visitor Center, and you can catch the free shuttle into Zion Canyon. During shuttle season (typically March-November), private vehicles aren't allowed on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. You can still drive the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway through the park, as well as Kolob Terrace Road and Kolob Canyons Scenic Drive--each offering a completely different perspective of Zion and well worth exploring. One word of caution...flash floods are real and can happen anytime, even when the sun is shining. If you plan to hike in the canyons or near the river, stop by the Visitor Center for current weather and trail information, and always pay close attention to changing weather conditions. If you plan to visit, check out the official Zion National Park website...there is a wealth of info about the park and how to best visit.

Zion National Park covers nearly 150,000 acres. Most people will go the most popular area in…read moreSpringdale, but there's a separate area known as Kolob Canyons which is located in a different area of the park about an hour's drive away. Kolob Canyons is a very pretty area, but less developed than Zion Canyon. Anyway, Zion has steep and sheer cliffs that leave you breathless. It also has a river and swampland, as well as emerald pools and waterfalls. It is so varied in its landscape, I really can't compare it to anything else. I hiked a whole bunch here: Angel's Landing, Emerald Pools, Weeping Rock, Riverside Walk, Canyon Overlook, even a bit of the Narrows. I want to do a through hike of the Narrows next time - I didn't have enough time in my schedule this time unfortunately. I saw more wildlife than expected too. I think a lot of the animals are habituated to humans, and aren't frightened at all. I also love how well run the shuttle system is. The bus drivers will radio to each other if there's a long line at any stop, and they will send an empty bus there to help avoid extended waits. It's so thoughtful. I stayed in the Zion Lodge, but I'm sure that the gateway town of Springdale has a similarly efficiently run shuttle system as well.

And then there's Clear Creek Ranch. Smells sometimes escape me (broken nose from a fight at Enclave - something to do with strippers, Ukrainian mob, etc.), but the smell of wood and earth penetrated my senses and settled in as I watched the sun set behind some mountains west. This sprawling lodge had 10+ rooms, bunk beds for the kids and dedicated/shared bathrooms to house way many more people than our paltry group of 10. A kitchen with all the necessities and a wide open parlor that's anchored by a fireplace and a spectacular view of a pond outside and Zion not far beyond. The internet didn't work, but was assured that connection there was usually reliable, but I found this disconnect a welcome feature. No calls, no urgent emails to respond to, no NOISE that we seldom notice as we've become numb to it's incessant need to grab our attention. This was our first time in Zion and we were completely and utterly spoiled. We picked a room that could occupy 4 and settled in. A sprawling fireplace dominated the central common area and was overlooked by a balcony on the second floor that had a second suite of rooms available. The outside patio feature picnic tables and both a charcoal and a gas grill. The property was managed by Gordon, a true to life cowboy whom you'd probably want to throw a few beers back together to hear what stories he had behind smiling eyes. Behind the lodge was a vaunted obstacle course that a sorority was using for pledge week. This is a no holds barred obstacle course that my broken body can no longer dream of tacking, but local law enforcement and military use regularly. The Zion entrance is just 5 minutes away, making this location was ideal. I'm running out of words to describe the magnificence of this place. It's everything and more than a city boy like me would envision of a mountain getaway. I love this place and so will you.

I visited to ask about the trail conditions for Buckskin Gulch since it looked like there might be rain on the horizon and I did not want to be caught in a flash flood in the slot canyons. The ranger was very helpful and had a whiteboard with trail conditions that are periodically updated. Also inside the station are maps and informational signs. There is also a bathroom and a water fountain. Good place to stop by if you need information.

When checking in, you are greeting with Snacks and a Tour of the House. Everything was very clean, tidy, and available for use as if this is your own house. There are multiple rooms for lounging and a kitchen for both your groceries and to share with other Guests. Each guest we met were very polite and were in Utah for the same reasons, to hike, bike, or explore the unknown! Also, each morning she prepared a breakfast menu which blew everyone away! French Press Coffee, Yuma Mate, Swedish Pancakes, and Bacon/Eggs were some of my favorite options available. While looking for other accommodations in the Springdale and Rockville areas, Lezlie's Bed and Breakfast both had the best reviews and price for the 3 night stay. If you get the chance to visit Zion National Park, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking out this Bed and Breakfast for your stay!!
