Although open on Saturdays (until 2pm) be warned that they are closed all day on Wednesdays. But at FNS they keep it simple. No distractions, no silly theatrics, they just get on with cutting your hair and making sure you get what you asked for. Before I go on I should warn that it does charge Clifton (high) prices. Getting my head shaved (I imagine the cheapest thing they offer) cost eight quid, which is a little bit extortionate, but there you go. Whilst I think it must be pretty hard to justify pricing a once of with an electric razor that high, they do make an effort to improve on the usual barber shop experience. For example, I once got a cut throat shave that involved a shot of whisky for the sting afterwards. The staff are friendly without being annoying, and didn't mind when I took a call halfway through a hair cut. The wood fixtures and general ambience mean it doesn't feel too relaxed. This is a gentlemen's barber shop rather than anything trendy.

Being at the heart of Clifton Village and with another sterling offering in the barber shop world just down the road, this one is forced to keep firmly in line. This friendly atmosphere extends to several occasions now, whilst waiting in a longer than normal queue being offered a cup of tea/coffee or water. I have my hair cropped short and this is still the only barbers I've found (that isn't upper market) to finish the sideburns and neck with a cut-throat razor and talc - a small addition that really helps to sharpen the final look of the cut. A waiting room, for starters, with a fine selection of men's magazines and comfortable seats. A few good chairs line the walls with big clean mirrors to catch up on a spot of vanity. The brushes and scissors are kept in pots of steriliser that smell of Top Gear and London Pride. Then the memories flow back. The red and white spiral column out front, or the conversation with the gentleman - so much more than the trivia spilled in most modern hairdressers. And the price? The price is just right - about a tenner. What more could you want?

Aldo is no spring chicken, but that just means he's experienced and his hands don't shake nearly as much as you'd think (I'm kidding they're steady as a rock). He will give you the best cut-throat shave in Bristol and the conversation isn't too bad either, so pop in for your Monday morning shave and get your short back and sides; he will always fit you in. He is in fact a legend of those parts. You think he'll be more like Luca the barber from The Armando Iannucci Shows, and he might ask you something like, 'why they do all those experiments on animals...very cruel yes?....maybe they should use puppets from children's shows, like clangers....let's face it, the clangers, they'd remove one of our testicles if they had to...etc.' But don't worry he won't.
