a row of wine bottles

What a selection! Kamuela is a liquor store but is heavy on the wine inventory. It's more of a wine store with a liquor section. Mostly imported wines are featured here with some great champagnes and moscatos from France and Italy as well as many Napa vintages. The have a chilled wine cellar in the back of the shop that has the creme da la creme. I found a $600 bottle but most bottles ranged between $100-300. Lot of great old treasures in the cellar. Great place to grab a few bottles, regardless of you price range. Be sure to pet the adorable shop dog while you peruse.

I love this liquor store.....I stop here every time I am on island. It is not the largest liquor store or the fanciest...but they have what I need (and crave)! Now people, keep in mind....this is the Big Island. Yes, you can get pretty much anything you need on the island, but when it comes to specialty liquor...that's even hard to get on Oahu, much less the Big Island. But at Kamuela Liquor Store hard to find liquor happens to be on the shelf...and I know a lot of people order high end wine from here too. One time I found Cat Daddy moonshine (yes!) and another time I found a limited edition bottle of Four Roses single barrel! That's even hard to find on the mainland! This last time, I purchased a bottle of EH Taylor small batch.....yum. They even had Mimolette cheese, which I haven't had for a long time...due to the ban.....so amazing! I will no doubt visit this store again!

We arrived early after maybe 10am. That means like should be fresh, right? The gentleman serving poke was wonderful! Very kind and easy to talk to. He was very patient waiting for us to make a decision. Once, we were ready to check out, only self check-out was available. This was fine. No big deal. We also purchased fried vinegar chicken wings (which was really good). They've made portions smaller but it's ok. Still worth the money. Now, for the poke itself. It was not good. I couldn't figure out why and husband said it did not seem fresh. That's it. The texture or flavor was not what it usually is. It was ok but they have served better. I have been craving this poke for weeks too. It was so bad that I just didn't feel like stopping by another day. Maybe, next time we visit, the poke will be fresh. Keep in mind, this is one of the only grocery stores around this area so be prepared for some very high prices on water and snacks. Convenient items needed are very pricey as well. Excellent customer service will make up for all those things though. I'm sure I will be back. Oh, and I cannot forget my butter mochi. Another craving I get in Hawaii. I will wait to hit the grocery stores for this and it never disappoints.

This was not only the worst retail experience in all my years living in Hawai'i, it was the worst…read moreshopping experience ever. I don't say that lightly, nor am I exaggerating. When I came into the shop, the owner was helping the only other customer there. I walked around and found some bottles of what I was looking for in the back, where a woman was wrapping baskets. She made no eye contact with me, and didn't offer a greeting. I remained in the back for over five minutes, repeatedly looking at her and trying to get her attention, but she refused to engage. I returned to the front, where the owner had finished cashing out that one customer and was chatting with him. He made no acknowledgement of my existence for at least another five minutes. The other customer then left and the owner finally asked what he could do for me. I said that I just wanted some help. He told me that it was a very busy time of year (note: at this point I was the only customer in the shop, previously there were two, including myself), and that I need to have patience. This felt like a highly passive aggressive thing to say. But I desperately wanted a certain liqueur for my husband, so I ignored the comment and checked out the bottles. He left me in the back to help another customer. By the time I returned to the cash register with my bottle of choice, he had just started to cash her out. A "she's been waiting, would it be okay if I assist her" might have been nice and what I would have done but I let that slide too. The customer left and he started cashing me out. Being one who's both honest and upfront, I told him that I understand both being busy and patient, I'm an elementary school teacher with Hawai'i DOE; the customer service was deeply lacking, and that I had thought the woman in the back didn't even work there, but rather was a volunteer. He repeated his line about it being a busy time of year (at this point I think there were three customers, including myself, but not including the distributor near the register). I said something to the effect of, "too busy wrapping baskets to even greet a customer," and reminded him of my very busy job. The owner then asked me to leave. As I was walking out I heard him tell the distributor that this had never happened before, but if you look through previous reviews, there are complaints about this woman. Ultimately the owner did me a huge favor. The bottle I was going to buy retails for $45-$52, he was selling it for $79. Another bottle that he was listing for $87, a competitor had for $64. Extremely greedy in addition to rude? All of DOE will hear about this experience!

The woman there was so unfriendly, didn't even say hello, so we ended up leaving. Given the wine selection and most likely this being a small owner shop, one would have thought the customer service would be much better...
