Came here on a Saturday night while I was in town and the service was terrible upon walking in. Everything was slow motion and unorganized. We were told there was no wait, they just had to clean off a table. 15 minutes later we have to ask what's going on and the host walks over and barely cleaned anything off. We were sat with a couple who was not too happy to be there. We ordered our appetizers and they came out fairly quickly once someone actually came over to take our orders. The edamame was okay. Nothing special 5/10 The salad wasn't for me but my sister enjoyed it 6/10 The miso soup was decent, just like any other hibachi soup The shrimp tempura was good and fresh and probably the best thing we consumed there 8/10 The cups were dirty and we had to request to go cups I ordered chicken, steak and shrimp. The shrimp tasted like it had been frozen a few times and then cooked. The steak was not medium as I requested. The chicken had the most flavor out of it all, but it may be because I requested extra garlic butter on everything. The chef was really nice and accommodating, tipped him but I notice most people don't do that The service was completely slow and we did have to wait almost 25 minutes for the chef to come out. Everyone knows I'm greedy and tired of being trapped in the house. Hibachi will take care of you. Entertaining and good food. And I'm that one at the table that either starts a convo w others or vice versus. So make sure you get seated near me. Because it will be fun. This shopping plaza in Snellville has sooo much, Hollywood feed, Red Robin shopping and even a wing place. Seating happened really quick and so did ordering. Let me save you, bc to me most hibachi stations are the same. This one however is visually more appealing over the location in stonecrest. The wait is not as long on the weekends. And the staff was top notch. I wish I knew the young mans name. He was super knowledgeable about the menu and saved me from ordering something with sake. We been passing this place for a while now, everytime we go to the taco Tuesday spot across the street. Well, we finally decided to go. We walked in and the place was nicely dim lited and not crowded at all, so that was a plus. The server was nice, nice attitude and attentive. So we ordered drinks, I got the cold unfiltered sake, which was bomb, the ole lady ordered a lemon drop. The chef came out, and was pleasant and had lots of humor. I have been going here since I was a kid. I feel like the quality has gone down. It took a while to even get drinks, the hibachi vegetables didn't seem fully cooked until golden brown. The hibachi rice was meh and I had to add soy sauce. Usually their hibachi is good. I asked for tofu to add to my order and they said they couldn't do that. This was my family's first time dining at Kampai, we went Monday, February 6, 2023 To celebrate our daughter's 25th birthday! We arrived around 7pm and we were greeted promptly and were seated in less than 3 minutes. Our server was Irenya and she couldn't have been nicer! She informed us there was only one cook on duty. The people here are nice, and the ambiance is always nice. But, if you're closer to the Stonecrest area, DEFINITELY go to that location INSTEAD of the one in Snellville on Hwy 124. Why they cook and present food differently, I don't know, but there is a big difference between the two. It seems that at Stonecrest, the food is cooked way better. It's ALMOST like they are two completely different chains of restaurants. I get house rice regularly. Stonecrest... meats are tender. Meats are cut into pieces, except the shrimp. Seem to be cooked with the rice. Small chopped white onion and chives. Great flavor. Snellville... meat seems to be cooked separately and then added in. But it's dry and seems overcooked. They are in the dish like meat strips vs. being diced. No chives but onions that look like they grilled them for a burger, then added on top of the rice. Sushi.. meh. Not bad, but nothing memorable. You're not going to choose this location to satisfy that itch. I'd strongly recommend Tekano, formerly named Sushi Ave located less than 10 minutes away, closer to where Hwy 78 and Hwy 124 intersect. read more

I've dined a few times at Kampai. Sometimes you really need real hibachi, and Kampai is certainly real hibachi. Check out those prices though. Kampai was overpriced even before it was cool to do so (before crazy inflation and supply chain issues drove input prices up). Even years ago, the steak and shrimp hibachi hovered right near $30. Throw in upcharges for fried rice [weird for a supposed nice hibachi place to not include it in the price...], a takeout fee that they previously hid, and you're spending quite a bit of money. The flavors were all there each time that I've gotten food from Kampai, but the flavors weren't great enough to make up for the relatively small portions. If I'm paying Benihana on restaurant row prices [yeah, i know Benihana on restaurant row charges significantly more...], then I expect really great portioning. I'd frankly just drive to Benihana next time before I get gouged by Kampai again. read more

This used to be a decent restaurant but they really went downhill with food and service . If you order Carry Out, there is automatic gratuity. There is only one person who will take your order even though there may be two attendees standing at the counter. If you dine in, the servers are always stressed and overwhelmed so you feel like you rushed through with poor service . The chicken is overcooked and rubbery. The tables often dirty and have trash under them. Nasty! With so many new restaurants on Scenic Hwy, there are too many options to tolerate this . You lost a regular patron! read more

Summary of Facts We had a reservation for 8; 4 adults, 4 kids ages 6-11. The "Chef" did not put on any level of show. No onion volcano. No egg on the spatula. No shrimp toss. No interaction. They forgot to serve the kids steamed rice. Twice. For the 5 people eating fried rice, 1 egg. Undercooked rice. We received no drink refills. The kids were being re-filled out of the adult's waters. The to-go boxes were handed to one person as a stack to pass around. The yum yum sauce was not good. No brown sauce offered. I was shocked at how much oil and sauce went on my salmon. The scallops were so under-done, 3 of us couldn't eat them and one was polite to choke it down. They mis-counted our scallops so as almost everything was finished, they brought the missing portion, and placed them under a bowl in an attempt to steam them quickly. I repeatedly asked the waitress if there was an upcharge to sub the rice for vegetables. She said there was not but in fact, I was charged $2.95 extra. There is an unspoken auto-grat of 18%. My mom and 2 of the kids found themselves puking and pooping for a solid 24 hours the next day. My brother and his wife took their food home and re-cooked it. I didn't eat mine. The 2 kids who didn't get sick, had shrimp and steamed rice. Everyone else got food poisoning. My Rant I don't write reviews but when someone spends a fortune and gets sick after, it needs to be shared. This was not a cheap dinner. This was supposed to be a rare occasion for my elderly mom to get out with her kids and for our kids who've never seen hibachi before and are finally old enough to enjoy it. From the moment that onion went on the grill, we knew we were about to get less than we bargained for. It was doused in oil, lit on fire aaaannndd scooted over to the pile of veggies. A single egg was cracked and scooted over to the rice. There was never a second flame until he scraped the grill. We could have gotten the same show at Waffle House. We hoped the kids would not realize they'd been gypped but unfortunately there were tables around us who at least got the basic experience. 2 of our kids ordered steamed rice. I requested it twice. It was finally brought near the end with the extra scallops. The scallops. Those who received their scallops in the beginning of the meal, got them so raw they were unpleasant. I chose to not punish myself. My mom, didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings and ate it anyway. But my lucky brother, who was forgotten, had the privilege of watching his portion arrive in a bowl, get flopped on the grill and the bowl turned on top. We didn't know what was happening. My thought at the time was just how not-right they looked. Kinda looked like they had that slim frozen seafood gets when you let it sit in the fridge for defrosting too long. Anyway, we eventually realized the chef was trying to rapidly steam them. Bleh. Probably needs to invest in a meat thermometer if he's gonna try that. By this point, my brother, sister, and I are so put off, we don't eat hardly at all. Cups were never re-filled and we found ourselves filling the kids from our waters. The to-go boxes were handed to me in a stack to be passed around which felt less-than appropriate for the price. When checks were dropped off, there was an additional charge for my vegetables which the waitress insisted there would not be. I'm not the type that gets mad about an auto-gratuity but in this case, I kinda was. The very next day my elderly mom, who lives alone became violently ill. Both ends. Couldn't get up. We were really worried. After 24 hours, she improved but is still extremely depleted. A couple hours after my mom, 2 of the kids came down with the same symptoms. The 2 kids who did not get sick, ate something different (steamed rice and shrimp). My brother and sister re-cooked their food before eating and I did not eat mine. We did not get sick. Everyone who ate the hibachi got food poisoning. Not only did we pay hibachi prices to get a show worthy of take out, we got the world's only disgusting yum yum sauce, and food poisoning. read more

Service was very good and we were seated right away on a Thursday evening. It was not crowded at 5:45 pm. You have your choice of regular table and menu service or family style hibach grill where the chef prepares the food right in front of you, typically with humor and a bit of a show. We chose hibachi (definitely recommend) and among our group we had shrimp, steak, chicken, vegetables and scallops, served with fried (extra) or steamed rice. It was all very good. Prices are mostly $20-30 per person, excluding drinks and dessert, although you can spend more for filet mignon or lobster. read more

This restaurant used to be my go to for hibachi and sushi! Yesterday, my best friend and I went for hibachi and I will never go back. Nothing that was prepared had any seasoning at all. No salt, soy, teriyaki, pepper, sesame, NOTHING! The chef used liquid eggs and a squirt of liquid butter, then threw the rice on top and called it a day. No show, no excitement, simply lit the grill on fire and then lit the onions on fire for the veggies. That's it! My shrimp were put on the grill with a single squirt of lemon and then placed on my plate. My friend ordered filet mignon and it tasted like raw steak and a stick of margarine. We were each given yum yum sauce but no ginger sauce and we literally poured the entire container onto our food in hopes that it would add flavor. It didn't! That's unheard of! Yum yum sauce with no flavor???? The server never came through to check on things and instead, dropped the check 20 seconds after the chef left the table. I've never left a hibachi dinner in less than 1.5hrs and we were back in the car with our entire meal in a box, in less than 45 minutes. $100 meal... never again. So disappointing!! read more

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THE SERVICE SUCKED! I reserved for a table of 20 2 weeks in advanced and when i got there they did not have my reservation. I had to stand and wait til everyone arrived to even be seated. Table of 20 for my sons 10th birthday we spent almost 1k between 20 people for 14/20 people to end up with food poisoning INCLUDING a pregnant woman. I called on 1/23 and the manager told me they were busy and the food is good. I called again 1/24 as my 3 year old daughter has not slept and has been throwing up with a fever of 102 or higher.. my 10 year old son with a fever of 101 and higher and all symptoms youd expect from food poison. Another 10 year old my son's best friend went home on 1/22 and pooped himself and threw up. 2 year old and 5 year old nephews stomach ache and diarrhea. 13 & 16 year old headaches and vomiting. All the rest of the adhlts stomach ache , immediate diarrhea, headaches and throwing up. When i called 1/24 they laughed at me told me to take my kids to the drs and I did before they told me to and they will not refund me. They cooked Chicken , salmon , shrimp , steak , scallops, veggies & rice all on the same skillet and not not clean it after each item. They cross contaminated the food. I never been to hibachi so I didnt know what to expect. I will never go back. And I will be filing a Law suit. They will block your number if you call and complain and ask for a refund. I come here very often, about 1-2 times a month and always love their hibachi! I usually get the shrimp or the scallops. The chef called "L" is the best, ask for him! He adds extra spices so the food tastes awesome every time. They have really good sushi as well, so try out a roll or 2 if you are in the mood for sushi! The only downfall at times is they get very busy and then you wait a long time before your whole table side is sat and then the chef comes. read more

I will not compare the wait times, because it was un-fair, as I just popped up here right at opening times, so we were sat quite fast. I will say, unlike the other hibachi place that I reviewed, this place is CLEAN, and they're social distancing and require masks. They space at least two chairs between each party. I have visited their sister location down near Stonecrest with my sister-in-law. We had their sushi, at the time. But she did tell me that she liked coming to Kampai, because you can still order hibachi w/o the theatrics. My friend/old coworker and I decided to go with the theatrics, because why not. We were 1 of 3 groups sat at our station at the time. It was like all other hibachi places, and had the typical show, spinning the egg, starting a huge fire, the volcano, etc, etc. (My yelp friends must think I'm a prude for not thinking hibachi places are fun LOL). Anyways, onto the food. We were HANGRY. I ordered shrimp + steak, my coworker got chicken + steak. Our meal together was around $60 which was not bad at all! We walked in, the sushi area and bar are right there. The bar was dirty with crumbs and dishes. She really wanted hibachi, so we hung in there. We were seated at a grill along with two other young ladies from a different party. Our guest's "clean" plate had old, dried rice on it. We ordered our drinks, soups and salads. So far...meh. Everyone is sipping their soup, laughing and talking. All of a sudden, the ladies from the other party jump and scream! I look over and see a B.A.C. (Big Ass Cockroach!) Scampering across the floor!!! The young lady said the bug came from the table and was on her arm!!! She swatted it off. OMG!!!! We ALL left immediately. We ended the night at a burger joint...I couldn't find ANY current health inspection scores on this restaurant, but the past scores that I found were all in the low 70's.
