I don't think you could find a better music teacher than Jane Summerlin. She's worked with my two…read moresons, ages 5 and 9, since about August and they've both made huge strides in that time, even performing at their first recital just last month. I am not musical myself, and I will admit I was worried that neither of my kids would last very long in lessons but that was primarily based on all the stories you hear of mean piano teachers who make the instrument feel like work (or, maybe the ideas about such teachers you get from movies and books). Jane is nothing like that. Instead, she shares her joy in music with both of my kids (and me), and does a remarkable job encouraging them to learn and grow as musicians. I think what I like best about Jane's teaching style is that it is consistently kind but tailored to each of my kids. My 9-year-old can be always seeking to do the next thing, or learn the next thing, or get things right on the first try, and Jane talks with him about staying in the moment, about rejecting perfectionism as it can hinder you, and about slowing down and relishing where you are, instead of what's next. Meanwhile, my 5-year-old (who was mostly interested in pursuing piano because his older brother was) can be goofy (as 5-year-olds are) and needs more help grasping the basics. Jane is able to guide him with exercises that are at his level, and make it fun for him. She taps into his artistic personality, and I think that also really helps. Based on my own kids' experiences with her, I'd assume that Jane gets to know each of her students, and works to develop them according to their personalities and temperaments. (During the recital, her students -- a range of ages and skills -- played a range of instruments and songs that suited them, and Jane had specific insights about each one of the kids.) In all, I am amazed at my kids' progress on piano, and we will definitely continue our lessons with Jane. I'm awed to see my children learn music in a way I never did, and I know it's so valuable to them not only to gain a skill but to gain a patient, smart, and kind guide in the process. Jane really cares about her students, and it comes through in every lesson.

I went several times to Barbara Don's strings ensemble group that meets at her house. The ensemble…read moregroup costs $20 a session, and I bought two books. At the time I was a beginning cellist of about 2-1/2 years. Barbara is very knowledgeable, and seems to have good technical skills. However, she's ill-tempered and snapped at me a number of times, correcting me in a very unkind and embarrassing way. I heard from other people who had attended her ensembles at one point, who quit because they didn't like being yelled at. I told myself to ignore the way she treated me, just focus on technical skills and playing with the ensemble - but I couldn't. It was soul-crushing. I felt humiliated, and it greatly impacted my confidence. I even shed some tears over it. I decided, surely there must be other ensembles where the teacher doesn't verbally and emotionally abuse their clients. It's a real shame. If these kinds of things don't bother you, you might be able to do it. There were some people in the group in that boat. But if you're even a little bit sensitive, you might want to try someone else.
