Ah, Sprinters Printers…read more As if the script from some bizarre David Lynch movie about machines, the owner of Sprinters seems to spend almost all of his life in the company of many large printing devices. Various inks splutter and chatter as he potters between them adjusting saturation levels and filters. Occasionally he'll stop to fix one or poke another on his way to meet me at the till with my printing request. He is very much like a cartoon character in this way; an old man keeping the city running, hidden beneath the streets surrounded by machines. I find it easier to write enchanting prose than it would be to explain the frankly constant cold service and the steady increase in price recently from dear to, well, downright criminal. He has a lot of machines here that can print all matter of things in all sizes. If you need something printed, I'm sure he can help. Just expect the unexpected with this one.

The owners, Mike and Veneta, really earn their money, often working to difficult deadlines, and dealing with the problem of insufficient information, shonky artwork, and a general lack of clarity about what the end product should look like... and that's just me! Lord knows how they cope with everyone else, especially if they have a few more customers who are as indecisive as me. Thankfully, they have been in business for nearly a quarter of a century, and have long since learned how to deal with the vagaries and capriciousness of their client base. Instinctively able to visualise your requirement, and always oozing a sense of urgency, they make quick work of dealing with your requirement. I initially thought that their approach was a little dismissive, but have since understood the level of pressure that they are constantly under. There's a very genuine need to get the job done, and so when presented with the vacillating multitudes, it must be the only way to ensure that they don't spend the whole of their day locked in conversation, going round the houses, and ending up where they started! I have used Sprinters more times than I can remember, and my respect for this couple has increased with every job. They are honest, hard working and committed to achieving high standards, and I have been totally satisfied with every job that they have done.

Though, a bit of research will tell you if you want something printed the internet is invariably going to give you a better deal, but that involves waiting, so for quick results Greyhound is a good choice. They're fairly new in this shop, being here for about a year, and seem to be doing pretty well. The staff are helpful, and are pretty useful on the phone too, giving quotes very speedily and getting our order under way at a fast rate. They have a long list of services advertised on the front window - I needed some flyers when I used them, but they'll pretty much do anything of a commercial or private nature - even cashing in on the festive season with personalised christmas card printing.

At the digital printing centre on White Ladies Rd pretty much all of these can be taken care of, and then some. They do all the simple stuff like photocopies and scanning but take it a step further offering services like poster and map making. It's a well oiled machine here and it all gets taken care of efficiently and professionally.

Sadly, this became an expensive nightmare. While they claim they print and bind PhD thesis, they…read morehave no clear idea what it entails or what the format is...even though they say they print for Bristol University. A new PhD program Bath Spa led me here. The other printer we tried to use was confused as to the color of the cover, ad so, at the last minute, and at double the cost, I used this establishment....the cost caught me off guard. When I contacted them on Friday and it was explained to me that with the Bank Holiday, it would be printed on Tuesday. That was fine, but it was not explained to me that even though they had the file, it was scheduled for Tuesday, that this would be considered SAME DAY printing...clearly Friday is not Tuesday...When I repeatedly asked for a quote, it was ignored. When I gave my credit card information after the job began, I suddenly realized that I was charged for 24 hour rush service even though they had the file end of day on Friday and had already opened and checked it and scheduled the job. Now, the larger problem was that the product they delivered was not right. And if it's not right, you can't graduate. The Bristol University PhD printing format is the same as Bath Spa...The only difference between the two universities is that BSU wanted a navy cover with silver lettering and Bristol has gold and black...The printer had that part correct. Yeah. They also caught the mailman and gave him the package so that it was in BSU's hands the next day. Yeah again...Unfortunately, when BSU opened the package...the printing on the cover was wrong. My name, the year, and the title of my thesis was supposed to be on the cover. That's the way it always is. It wasn't. The confusion came in when a employee of the store wrote out of concern because the lettering on the cover could not be printed in the required manner. Which was odd...as for some reason they couldn't put the title in all capital letters, only one cap. at the start of each word. So she sent a PDF of the cover with two lines of print on it and asked if this looked okay. If the color right, etc. I sent the email onto my adviser at BSU...and both of us thought it looked fine...HOWEVER I did write the employee back as I was concerned that since she'd sent these two lines for our approval and not the entire finished cover, I needed to know that she was planning to print everything needed on the cover. So I wrote and asked specifically..."but you will print the rest of the title and such on the cover, right? Not just these two lines but all of it".....(I had earlier sent an email which specifically mentioned the need for the year, etc. on the cover) and as it is standard practice to print the name...The employee came back and reiterated that she had just sent TWO LINES from the cover...Again. Okay. I didn't mean to treat her like she was stupid. I was just concerned. Well, as you can imagine, when the cover arrived at BSU with only the title on it, it was a huge issue. I wrote this printer and asked if he could just add my name and the date to the cover. And since it was a mix-up, could he pay for the postage to send it back to BSU? As I'd paid double for overnight service and received this in four days, I didn't think it was a big deal to ask for this. IT WAS. :) The email from this establishment was so absurd. I was to pay to have the entire project redone or else pay an untold amount to have it rebound completely..at rush charges, clearly. These sad folks really have no clue. After his email, I sent several pointing out that his employee never sent us a complete proof of the cover to sign off on, so if she didn't understand that we needed the date and name on there, we really had no way to tell her. An experienced printer would know this. After repeated silence, I told him that he should never email me or speak to me again. This was such horrible customer service, and such a rip off...beware. Really...run.

Understandably, the office looks extremely busy; with paper flying out of printers and stacks of flyers waiting to be collected, but the staff seem to know where everything is and have some kind of order to the place. Press to print aren't the cheapest printers in Bristol, but are handily located and happy to help. A thumbs up from me!

The shop is a huge manic space with paper flying everywhere. Maybe because they are so busy they haven't got time to have a tidy up and maybe this is also why they act like they don't really want or need your business. I'm sure some of the staff are very friendly and helpful, but the man who served me wasn't. Like I said I get a lot of printing done for work and the quality of the printing they did for me was very good; clear with good depth of colour (sorry this is boring for people who don't care about printing, which is most people I imagine). But the cards they made for me were slightly wonky, they told me it was just the way the machine cut them and it couldn't be helped. But I would have liked it to be helped. So although I was somewhat happy with the job they did for me, the service and wonky cards have put me off going back there. But as they obviously have very good printers, for certain jobs they are probably perfect, I just haven't found what those are yet.

I soon came to realise it wasn't too cost effecftive doing it myself, so after a brief search I found Minuteman Press. I wasn't too sure what it was that I needed exactley, or indeed how I could achieve it, (double-sided printing and all that confusion that comes with it) so I went in and within moments of describing my problem a kind and helpful man sorted out what I was after. The service is very swift and proffesional, and you pay a very reasonable price from basic photocopying to DVD printing and dublication. I'm pretty sure if they don't know how to do it, well, it can't be done! P.S. the website is brilliant as well so if you are not sure that they can cover what you need just have a look online before you pay them a vist

Preparing for a rather important interview a while back, I was dismayed to find I'd left my laminator at my folks' home in Devon. Scouring the internet in a mild panic, I soon found mention of Minuteman Press and proceeded to leg it to said shop before it closed. Needing a fair few sheets lamenated for the following morning and having limited time before the shop shut, my gratitude for the sheer existence of Minuteman Press had thus caused me to overlook the small (or so I thought) matter of money. However, ten or so sheets ended out costing me a small fortune and my gratitude soon subsided into disbelief. Needless to say, services don't come cheap here but when it comes to printing and design, Minuteman Press in pretty handy to have around.

Ah the internet, it is a wonderful thing, from printing quote requests to... well Yelp I guess!

Taken advantage of due to their own mistake today. I went in here on the recommendation from the…read morepost office to get 4sheets of A4 printed off. I was asked what I wanted and explained 4sheets black and white, cheapest option possible. I then explained I would send one over at a time to make sure it came across correctly. The lady printed off 4copies of the same email. I then explained this is not what I wanted and she said if I wanted the rest it would be £10!!!!! ridiculous amount for 4sheets of paper. I was then charged £4 for the mistakes she made and left with 4 of the same copy. not impressed and 100% felt taken advantage of as she was making prices up as she went along. Very unfair and bad business for any future customers.

I usually send off for my photographs online - I thought you got far better deals that way…read more Recently I just needed a few photos, but I didn't them for the next day so I went to Fujifilm on Gloucester Road. What was quite nice, was speaking to a person! I think you forget doing so much stuff online how nice it is to communicate with real people! They have a number of different choices depending on how quick you want your photos developed and actually, weren't much more than the price I usually pay on line.

While I believe they are a good printers and will give you something that looks and feels like it has been professionally printed, the level of service that I received just was not good enough. Bad communication. Bad service. Good printing. I'm trying to stay as impartial as possible so I'll leave it down to you to make your own judgement.
