It was great seeing a collection of local art in the forefront and the pieces were moving, thought provoking, funny, and beautiful in a variety of different mediums. It's not always super local, (we had just missed the Paul McCartney photographs exhibit by a few days, which was more of a traveling showcase) but it's great to see them so committed to local artists to give them that visibility regularly. They also have a very cool kid's art-making space called "Martin ArtQuest" with tons of interactive play areas for children to exercise their creative juices that's free with admission to the museum. They also have sensory kits with noise-cancelling headphones, weighted blankets, and more available for anyone who gets a little over stimulated during their visit. There are snacks and a gift shop here, but if you want to make it a dinner and a show, there are places nearby. Gayle and I, along with Erin and Jim attended the April 30 performance of Opry Country Classics. The Larry Gatlin (and Brothers) were the MCs, with the Opry band handling the backup music, and Charlie Mattos doing the folksy "Play by Play", all live on WSM (We Shield Millions) Radio. Performers were Janie Fricke, Hanna Dasher, Moe Bandy, and Daily and Vincent as the featured artist. It was a great show! We had a nice 4 seat pew near the front, the sight lines (direct and via screens) were clear, and the sound quality/mix was excellent. Daily and Vincent (with the guest banjo player) were fantastic and I've already preordered their next album. The only minor irritation was Hanna Dasher shamelessly promoting her cook book (Stand by Your Pan), but even that added to the high quality entertainment value of this show. The Grand Ole Opry has operated out of several venues, and since 1974, performances have been in the Grand Ole Opry House; previously, it was the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville between 1943 to 1974. This year (2026) is a special year, as the Grand Ole Opry turns 100, and on February 28, 2026, there was a performance to celebrate 25 year anniversary of the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou?" The movie is well known for its soundtrack, and it introduced bluegrass music to a new generation. Performing were several artists from the soundtrack, such as Alison Krauss (my fifth time seeing her!), Emmylou Harris, Dan Tyminski, The Whites, The Fairfield Four, and the actor Tim Blake Nelson. There were also numerous other artists performing songs from the soundtrack such as Old Crow Medicine Show, Billy Strings, Sarah Jarosz, Molly Tuttle, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, and many, many more. Even though I didn't know most of the performers, I really enjoyed the show. After the performance, there was a Q&A with Tim Blake Nelson, Dan Tyminski, and Chris Thomas King. On every crowd-sourced platform, nearly every reviewer gives the museum a five-star rating. I think there are several factors at play as I left realizing I, too, would unequivocally bestow this experience five stars! First, it's the thoroughness of the story being told. The museum digs deep into the history of African American music, back to the negro spirituals, the ugly times of slavery, and gospel music of old. It takes you on a detailed journey all the way up to modern hip hop and R&B. Second, the museum is sprawling, sensory overload (in a good way) with tales of impactful musicians and their stories every which way you look through countless rooms! Videos and signage allow celebrities to tell their stories, discuss their influences, and comment on the enormous impact of black musicians. Third, it's an immersive experience. Patrons are encouraged to sing along to the music in one room, dance in another, download musical tracks onto their phones, and create beats from scratch. It's a fun and unique experience that is truly unlike most museums. And it's well worth your time!

The staff and volunteers at Nashville Shakes are dedicated to making a person's experience the best they can possibly have, the actors put their hearts into every new rendition of Shakespeare, and the writing holds up through the ages even if the play is modernized. Funny and entertaining, the staff, actors, and volunteers deliver an amazing experience, and I would recommend volunteering there if you want to immerse yourself in Shakespeare and enjoy your work. Having worked there for two years as a volunteer, I can say that I will have great memories of my time there, and that it was a privilege to have worked alongside such kind and passionate people for so long.
