It's been more than three decades since I last got on a basketball court to shoot some hoops, and it's nice to see that the Kapaolono Community Park is trying to up keep their facilities. This community park has a special place in my heart as I spent many hours here playing basketball, tennis, & baseball/softball. Kapaolono has a very large field, great for baseball & softball. Two tennis courts, & two basketball courts. They also have a swimming pool here, but I've never had a chance to use it. A few things I noticed about myself when I got back on the basketball court - 1. I noticed I had a little trouble dribbling the basketball, due to the neuropathy in my fingers. 2. I can still shoot the ball pretty well. 8 out of 10 on the freethrow line ain't too bad for an old fart like me. Lol! 3. Man, I am out of shape! If young kids asked me to join in on a pick-up game, I'd probably have to pass to prevent a heart-attack! Lol! 4. There are cracks on the basketball court, but at least the cracks are not craters! Lol! Still a great Community Park to visit & get some exercise! Gotta keep moving, to keep da old man out!

With just a few weeks to enjoy the tree a top the hill lit so beautifully and bright it's a place that I rarely get to enjoy and take in at my leisure since parking in the area is quite the real challenge. This year I did have some bucket list places that I really wanted to visit and why not start at a place that's been in my neighborhood since not knowing is quite shameful and decided Christmas Eve was the night that I needed to see it so I arrived early before the sunset and luckily did find parking right across the street and am happy to finally take it all in. It does sit right a top the fire station and there is a path that will take you straight up there which is all dirt so a rainy day will make climbing a challenge so it is something to keep in mind as there isn't any seating or covering as well but was surprised to find many to take the trip up to enjoy the sunset and tree along with the stunning view of Kaimuki and beyond. A free place to take it all in and enjoy and wished I did come up earlier to enjoy the sunset as this place is totally recommended and will be back. Thank you!

Discovering a new park while trying to figure out lunch plans is even more epic. The Niu Valley neighborhood is usually a quiet one, so I was interested in finding the Niu Valley neighborhood park somewhat a blessing when I needed a place to sort out what was for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. I arrived here around 1:15pm via public transportation. The Bus routes 1, 1L, 22, 23, and 24 come through this stretch of paradise and stop along Kalanianaole Highway. You'll need to walk about¼ mile or so from the highway itself to get to the park. During my most recent stay at the Niu Valley neighborhood park, I tended to just walk around the perimeter of the park and check out what this park has to offer. The plus side is that there's nice gym equipment for kids to play and families to gather here for an evening here to spend time together before dinner. The equipment doesn't look aged at all and the park itself seems maintained on a weekly basis. I do enjoy the park when it's very green during the year. Any sight of yellow or no grass seems to be a lack of maintenance - at least for me anyway. Niu Valley neighborhood park seems like its an extension of Niu Valley middle school, but its not. I spent about an hour here relaxing, enjoying, and walking through the park before making my lunch plans. It's always nice to have the park do your serious thinking for you. The overall experience here at the Niu Valley neighborhood park is classified as subtle, classic, and quiet. The wind that comes through the area is always brisk and sometimes breezy too. While I was here at the Niu Valley neighborhood park, there was just a couple of people here, not including myself. Neighborhood parks are a great and inexpensive way to spend the day without having to spend money. Of course, you can walk and cruise the mall, but chances are you don't spend money at a park. I love the groomed nature of the park and how neat and organized everything here is. The quiet ambiance of Niu Valley neighborhood park is what excites me when I can come back here, if I am in the area. For the most part though, I ended up walking around the perimeter of the park, which isn't too far around. I also people watched as something to do while doing those laps. I enjoyed the fact that this neighborhood park is definitely clean and away from basically everything and off the main road. If you ever need the mental time off, consider coming here to rest and recharge. Although the 2020 pandemic can be a problem, do what you can so that the Niu Valley neighborhood park can be of value to you. I'd recommend coming here if you are in the area and worth every second being here. It made me smile and hope it will bring you happiness too. The Niu Valley Neighborhood park has been a fun and soothing discovery. I'm glad that there is no visible homeless situation here - at least during the day. One major turn off when I come to neighborhood parks is the tents and all the garbage that's haphazardly on the property. I enjoyed my experience here at the Niu Valley neighborhood park, especially because it is tucked away into the residential area away from the main drag. It makes for a perfect peaceful getaway that's sure to please anyone and everyone who comes here. The park its great for families and individuals. I bet this park is used on a daily basis during the school year, since it's located next to Niu Valley middle school. It's physical address is 5510 Kanau Street on the western side of Halemauau Street. Like all community and neighborhood parks, there is no admission fee, which is awesome and expected. As far as parking goes, your best bet would be to try to find street parking on residential roads wherever you can to be as close to the park as possible. Let mother nature take you where you want to be. Consider coming to Niu Valley neighborhood park for a session. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Support local! A+

I stumbled upon a small little vestigue of paradise on one afternoon walking around the Kahala Mall…read morearea. Decided to check out this parcel of land they call Hunakai Park. Haven't seen this one before. Community Parks always is a nice place to seek out refuge from the urban rat race we all face on a daily basis. These vast landscapes help us humans rekindle our youth while reminding ourselves that life is something beautiful, whether we see it here in a community park, the ocean, or even the in the concrete jungle of everyday living. I arrived here on a brisk Friday afternoon in mid April 2020. The park itself is relatively a small space. Almost like vacant green space that was probably someone's back yard, but was converted into Hunakai community park. Although there is a small sand pit on the property, not sure if they use it for sand volleyball games or not. I guess users who play would need to bring in their own equipment, since the tendency of stuff getting stolen is high when left unattended. During my experience here at Hunakai park, I basically walked around the perimeter of the park and people watched as much as I can. I also tried to enjoy the fact that I was outside enjoying the fresh breeze on a warm spring April afternoon in Hawaii. I think I did about 5 laps around the park perimeter before stopping to relax. You can't really sit down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I just leaned under some trees to take the edge off before walking around a bit more before heading back to Kahala Mall for some take out options. It was nice to see some people out and about exercising and enjoying the outside. The overall experience here at Hunakai Park was quite nice, especially during the work day. It was very quiet and serene. The park itself is maintained by the good folks at the Hunakai Park association, which was formed in 2004 by volunteers in the community and sustained by charitable donations. Hunakai Park is located on the corner of Ulumaika Street and Hunakai Street in the heart of Kahala. Kahala Mall is about a mile away walking from the mall itself. There is mostly street parking where you can find it. If you are like me, bus routes 22, 23, and 14 provide service to the area, but you'd have to walk a block or two where the bus drops you off, depending on the street. Route 14 and 22 along Kahala Avenue and routes 23 and 24 on Kilauea Avenue. For the most part though, Hunakai Park is clean and very much a park for anyone and everyone to come and hang out in. With the rise of COVID-19 considerations, you can be sure that you can always come here to exercise and enjoy the view, but you can't sit down and relax - in the traditional sense. Only thing about the facility is that there is no facilities. No public restrooms here if nature calls. Best bet would be Kahala Mall or at Kahala Community Park a few blocks away, where there is restroom facilities on site. Needless to say that walking laps around the perimeter did give me joy,, even though the sun was relentless that afternoon. Hunakai park is also a dog park of sorts, where many people bring their furry companions here to play and socialize with others. I saw a couple of people with their pets here while I was doing my laps./It was soothing and nice to people watch. Nestled in the heart of Kahala, you can find peace and convenience here at this park. While it can be out of the way for some people, its worth the effort. Afterwards, the ocean is about 2 blocks away on Kahala Avenue, with a couple of entrances through public entrances. Hunakai Park is enjoyable and therauptic. Takes the edge off when you have had a tough day at the office. Recommended if you are in the area. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Public spaces are admission free. No charge! Support local! I've been on a park hunt ever since I discovered that my daughter loves the park. We have a park…read moreright down the street from us but it really just the standard playground equipment. So I've been trying to find parks with different types of equipment. I'm like a park stalker, haha. While driving, I'd look out at parks and check out the equipment at the parks. I've seen quite a few ones but then I look at the reviews on Yelp and it turns me away. Reviews say that there's a lot of homeless or theft there. But today I discovered a website that's shows me all the playground equipment at all the parks. And I found this great park today. It's really close to my home so I'm so glad that I found it. My daughter loves this park. She's quite a monkey and she loves to climb the apparatus. She went up the stairs and down the slide many times. They also had a disk where you could stand or sit and you could spin on it. We don't have that at our neighborhood park. I showed her how to do it and she loved it. She kept wanting to do it over and over again. She spun around so much and was laughing the whole time. In addition to the playground equipment they also have a big area where you can have a picnic or lunch. They have several picnic tables to sit at. They also have a tennis court, basketball court, and volleyball court. Best park I've been to so far! I will definitely come back soon!
