They are sometimes overloaded with many more children than they should have, and yet these teachers rise above everything and shine. Yet often the numbers are perfect and everyone always gets the attention they need, regardless of the degree of challenge to the tireless teachers. I am a substitute teacher and I stand in total honor of the daily educators here. Patient, fair, loving, and real. I can't recommended Pukalani school enough. I think I should know a lot about this place as I spent 9 years of my life here. Back then (wow, I…read morefeel old, LOL) Kahului School was kindergarten through grade 8. My class, the class of 1989, was the last "graduating" class of Kahului School as Maui Waena Intermediate opened up the following school year. The school colors and red and blue, the mascot is the eagle. COOL FACT: The original Kahului School was located at the corner of Kaahumanu Avenue and Kane Street (across of the Maui Beach Hotel and Sears). The sole building stood vacant for years before being torn down maybe 20 years or so ago. THE SCHOOL: The current campus opened in the 1960's and is located at the corner of Lono and Hina Avenues. During my time, the campus consisted of several portable classrooms and 11 buildings all connected to a central covered walkway. It was designed with the youngest students situated at the front of the campus, progressing west towards Maui High School to the upper classmen. Accessibility is convenient via two major streets. None of the buildings were air conditioned except for the main office. Oh yeah, we soldier-children suffered through the heat! MEMORIES: I still remember the smell of the kindergarten classrooms and the hated nap time. Boy, how I long for an after-lunch nap now! Along with age came cafeteria duties. Yes, child labor! We were pulled early from one class and marched to the cafeteria to report for duty. We either helped move trays along the assembly line, emptied leftovers into the slop barrels, or even operated the Hobart-brand dishwasher (not kidding). Aside from ditching class early, you also got to eat lunch earlier. Chicken patty and battered fried fish days were an automatic home-lunch day for me as just the smell of them made me nauseous! Nowadays I like frozen fish sticks but still can't stomach the thought of a chicken patty. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance daily along with a local or national anthem/song of our choice. Yearbook production started around 1983 and I still possess all of them. Believe it or not, I had one "GT" (gifted & talented) class in around the 3rd grade. For some reason it was held in a makeshift janitor's office as there were just a few of us, LOL. Tuesdays were "film days". We all piled into the cafeteria, louvers closed, watching a projector screen in the dark. Excursion days were my favorite as we got to leave campus. You'd see classmates picking up bentos from Noda Market early in the morning before school. Numerous times we'd end up at Baldwin High School's auditorium to take in plays. I ran track for several years and competed in track meets. I was also a band geek and played the clarinet. Our bandroom was so ghetto! It was two portable classrooms surgically attached together to form a doublewide. TEACHERS: Yes, I still remember all nine homeroom teachers along with a few others. K = Mrs. Okuda, 1st = Mrs. Kimura, 2nd = Mrs. Rogers, 3rd = Mrs. Toda, 4th = Mrs. Wainui, 5th = Ms. Machida, 6th = Mrs. Shimabuku, 7th = Mr. Wright, 8th = Mr. Irimata. Band = Mr. Manzano, woodshop = Mr. Norman, PE = Mr. Yap. CURRENT DAY: Grades are now K through 5 only. Two of the permanent buildings burned down due to arson and were never replaced. More ugly portable classrooms dot the campus and faculty park all over the lawn by the kindergarten building. OVERALL: So many fun memories but I really didn't care for school.

Wow! I recently attended the graduation ceremony at HTA campus in Kapalua and was blown away by how…read moreprofessional, friendly, and welcoming everyone was. It really puts the meaning into OHANA :) My Little Sister (Big Brother, Big Sister) was graduating from elementary to middle school and it was really lively, entertaining, and very touching. From ukelele groups to electric guitar, traditional Hawaiian songs to modern ballads, graceful hula and meaningful speeches, it really was inclusive, very happy and the bond between teachers and students was obvious. Probably because this is a small eclectic school and classes are very small allowing time for every child. Plus parents are a big part of their child's education with home schooling built into the curriculum. Before graduation each grade presented something to their peers, families and teachers in their classrooms, and 5th graders did an individual speech on topics such as Robotics and AI, CPR and Music, Recycling and Growing native plants, etc. Every student was amazing and I give a big cheer to those who found public speaking daunting (I don't like it either!), as they overcame their fear and gave remarkable speeches. Since my Little Sister started attending this school (her previous school burned down in the tragic Lahaina fire) her reading and writing have improved dramatically and she is making videos and writing books using special software on a laptop, making lithographs and exploring art concepts, playing the electric guitar, taking extracurricular self defense classes, and thriving! After attending her graduation ceremony I can see why! The school is part of a chain across the Hawaiian Islands and the Kapalua school will be moving to a new purposely built school in Lahaina hopefully by 2027, with special science labs, a makerspace, outdoor areas and bigger enclosed classrooms. They have come a long way from teaching in tents straight after the fire, to an old restaurant premises, to a newly built school. I'm very impressed with this school, I wish my daughter had the chance to attend this type of tech academy when she was growing up. I'm so glad my Little Sister has the chance :)

We found ArtLab in some summer camp guides and thought it'd be fun to try their 4 day 'Little Art Camp'. The space is located right next door to Aloha Crossfit in the business area above Piilani Highway off of Ohukai Road. From the first moment we walked in we were made to feel welcome and excited. Kids were already spray painting on a large sheet canvas and the teacher and her assistant were happily guiding them. The interior is large enough for a good dozen or more kids with tables and other areas to create art in. The kids make different art each day and I was more than impressed and amazed at their creations. The place has such a good atmosphere, good vibes, that we're already enrolling in the next Little Art Camp next month. Fantastic place!

At when its dark out it seen a scary and confusing to navigate there are maps of the campus but you in a rush they can been confusing. That said luckily there amply parking and security take there job seriously and are helpful. Higher Education is so important in Maui and this success really is tied to the success of the community as a whole so i'm a fan.
