McMenamins Kalama Harbor Lodge - Their "creole soup" - definitely can't recommend - very strange flavors and way overcooked meat

This little bar is my favorite place at this McMenamins location (although that Cove Bar is running a close second!). The view of the Columbia River, the food service, the attention to detail of my doppio espresso (a freshly sliced lemon peel & two lumps of rock sugar!), and the very yummy rosemary nuts, keep me coming back here whenever I can. McMenamins locations are often adventures all on their own - Kalama Harbor Lodge is no exception - but this location has the added distinction of being right on the river where you can watch the river traffic go by as you relax with a beverage and a server who quickly takes care of whatever you're looking for. If you go, and I encourage you to go, make sure you spend some time relaxing with the view. It's worth it!

This place is special. McMenamin's properties are always full of character and attention to detail as they usually choose quirky, historic buildings to renovate. What's special about Harbor Lodge is that they managed to achieve that charm in a new build. I love wandering the property taking in the landscaping, architectural details, and views along the Columbia River. One of my biggest criticisms of McMenamin's is that their menu is tired, and has long needed some new dishes to spice things up. I love that McMenamin's Harbor Lodge Pub has dishes unique to this property. The prawns are one of my favorites, served in a creamy sauce with garlic bread on the side. Yum! McMenamin's Harbor Lodge and the neighboring market are wonderful additions to the Kalama community, and definitely worth a visit if you haven't been.

But we couldn't have asked for a better experience than the one Boris and Lisa provided us with at Lewis River Bed and Breakfast. This place has breathtaking views along the water and a deck from which to watch the sunrise and sunset while eating any of your meals. Our hosts went out of their way to cater to us and add those special touches throughout the room, in the main house, and when eating. For example, when we were trying to decide what to have for dinner, Lisa provided us with menus and helpful descriptions of local food offerings. We got pizza delivered and Lisa had chilled a bottle of wine for us to enjoy while we sat outside and took in the view. And breakfast was to die for with French toast with fresh berries and syrup, bacon, fresh melon, eggs, juices... this is a place I would love to visit again and look forward to seeing our wonderful hosts again

We usually stay within the Hilton portfolio when traveling, but for this trip to Southwest…read moreWashington, surprisingly, we weren't able to find any Hilton properties available for our dates. That led us to look at other options, and we ended up booking here for a four-night stay in late September. The booking process was straightforward--I was able to use an older account I had from years ago when I was traveling internationally, particularly in France. Back then, I had the impression Best Western was more of a smaller, regional brand in the western U.S., but it's actually much larger than I realized, with 18 brands across more than 100 countries and territories. In terms of experience, Best Western feels a step below our usual Hilton stays. That being said, check-in was simple, though not quite as seamless as we're used to since there was no digital key option. We had to wait at the front desk for a bit with two other guests ahead of us, which wasn't a major issue but did add to the first impression. The property itself is dated, and unfortunately that showed throughout our stay. Our room, while clean enough, felt dark and somewhat tired, even with most of the lights switched on. The bed was comfortable and we did appreciate that the room was fairly quiet at night, which made for decent sleep. However, there were some details that left us less than comfortable. The shower water never got beyond lukewarm, which was disappointing. There was leftover blue painter's tape on the ceiling and around the shower--presumably from a recent paint job. There was a cobweb from the ceiling down to the shade on one of the lamps. Those kinds of details made the room feel unfinished. We didn't make much use of the amenities on-site, since this stay was primarily about having a base while we explored the areas between Vancouver and Longview/Kelso. Because of that, our perspective is limited to the room itself and the general upkeep of the property. Overall, it served its purpose, but we didn't feel entirely at ease here. Would we stay again? If it were the only option within our price range, yes. But next time we'd likely do more research ahead of time to see if a local hotel, a small motel, an Airbnb, or even a bed and breakfast might offer a more comfortable alternative.

I am writing to formally report the unacceptable treatment I experienced while attempting to…read moreresolve an issue with an online reservation. What should have been a simple correction turned into several days of frustration, dismissiveness, and unprofessional behavior from the hotel staff. Immediately after submitting my reservation online, I realized I had mistakenly booked with the wrong hotel location. When I contacted Best Western customer service, I was informed that any refund or cancellation would need to be handled directly by the hotel. Upon calling the hotel, I was told that only the manager could authorize refunds, but she was not available and I should call back the next day. After several days of repeated calls, I was informed that there was no manager at all--only an owner who was never present--and that refunds were simply never given. The staff member I spoke with was incredibly rude, dismissive, and made no effort to provide assistance or even basic courtesy. This experience reflects a serious breakdown in communication, accountability, and customer service. Being told to repeatedly call back, only to ultimately learn that no one with authority was ever available, is unacceptable. The rude treatment I received only compounded the issue. I recommend avoiding staying at the Best Western Woodland Washington. I will also not stay at any other Best Western across the country because of this rude and unprofessional treatment.

Opening up their warm and gorgeous castle to you, Kat and Donn make great hosts that have that unique balance of being friendly and leaving you to discover on your own. The rooms are beautiful, the First Light room, even at the smallest room, was still well appointed with a walk in closet modified into a treasure chest of books, movies, games, a mini fridge and food area (both stocked with snacks even!) water container, extra towels, blankets, serious, it's like a huge cupboard of goodness. Breakfast was divine, seriously, that woman should open up a restaurant closer to me so I can eat there all the time! We stayed two days and were sad to go, I could have been happy there for a week. They have a myraid of animals that roam about and we made fast friends with the cat and pups, having those as tourguides around the grounds was a nice welcome. But let me tell you, that Turkish steam shower? Wow. WOOOOOOWWWWW! As relaxing as it sounds. Maybe more so. Overall, I can't wait to return and with the great prices and fantastic food that comes along with it, it's a sure thing we'll be back again and again. Thanks to both Kat and Donn for creating such a lovely space within just a few hours drive of busy Seattle.
