Rude and dismissive. For them you are just a number. They quote you an amount for the service, they charge higher, and once they take your money, they disappear without an explanation and refuse to engage with you and explain. My brother and I were selling our mother's apartment, through a Power of Attorney. He was listed as the primary attorney and I was listed as the secondary attorney. Our mom is a senior and we wanted to get the lowest possible price for her, as every dollar counts in her situation. I called around asking for fees. Kahane indicated that it is not certain how much would be charged for an estoppel and insurance, and quoted a range between $1,100 and $1,300 in total, in order to account for that uncertainty. I had also confirmed the sale price in order to ensure I am getting as accurate as possible estimate. After we engaged them, at the meeting where we were supposed to close the deal, the fee they had incorporated in the closing documentation was $1,465. I was on the phone while my brother was in the office, and I questioned this price and why it is higher than the range they provided. The lawyer said this is an "accounting thing" and they will send us the breakdown after the possession date. Given the tight deadlines with real estate deals, my brother was forced to sign and deal with the fee later. After the possession date, we received documentation from the legal office, indicating their fees were $1,185 and the estoppel and insurance was $210. If their fees alone were $1,185, then the quote of $1,100-$1,300 for the total cost was a direct lie as they know what their fees are, and they know it will never be as low as $1,100. I called the paralegal to ask for an explanation. She was extremely rude and dismissive, and told me to talk to the lawyer. I called the layer (Jacalyn Symonds) twice, she never responded. I left her voicemails each time and she never returned them. When I did not get a call in three weeks, I resorted to writing a negative review on various platforms, and on one of them I saw an option to contact the Managing Partner. I did that, and the Partner got back to me and instead of focusing on the dishonesty of his staff and the poor customer service, he got really agitated about why I wrote the reviews before contacting him. He made me feel very belittled and said since my brother was the one to sign the deal I am not a client and I have no right to question the fees. Even though I am listed on the Power of Attorney, I selected this firm, and the only reason I was not physically present at the signing was because the roads are bad and I am pregnant, but I was present on the phone and my brother signed based on my advice. So then my brother e-mailed the lawyer and the Managing Partner, indicating that he, as the one who signed the deal, was dissatisfied with the service, and in good faith I removed my negative reviews. We never got a response on my brother's e-mail. So here I am, writing another review on how utterly disappointed I am with this law firm. These people clearly see you as just a number and will make false claims in order to take your business, then once you are pressed against the wall as you need to close the deal, they jack up the price and refuse to provide any explanation. So disappointing. Would not recommend to anyone I care about. read more

For $1200 CAD, my attorney at Kahane and I concluded that Alberta was the wrong jurisdiction for my matter. The monies were taken out of the retainer that I had paid. It was not my decision. My Ontario attorney, for $1350 CAD, wrote and submitted a full complaint. I have attached an email thread for which I was charged $90 CAD. (I have taken out the attorney name and the company against which I was filing.) You decide whether this was an appropriate charge. I am happy to share the other charges. Please note that Jeffrey Kahane threatened me with a lawsuit by a ski buddy attorney in New Jersey (my State of residence) should I post negative reviews. Jul. 7 Email from and to M. Goldstein: No worries. I recollect that we had discussed 2 weeks from our call on June 26th as the deadline, this Friday. You had mentioned that it would more likely take you a week. So, you are correct that Thursday would be before the deadline. I can tell you are very busy, which means you are good at what you do. I just want to make sure that I don't get bumped down your priority list. By the way, I actually got paid yesterday for one month's worth of work from (company). That means that they owe me ($ figure) presently. I am waiting on submitting my invoice to (company) for June as I want the clock to run as deep into the month before they realize that they never terminated the agreement. read more

In my experience I would NOT go back to Kahane Law. In my experience, I feel, Chadwick was unprofessional and condescending throughout the process. I had multiple billing issues and one of them being taking money without authorization. read more

Mr. Kahane took the time to respond to my review. It is not as he said. I signed a contract based on a defective corporate search by the firm leading to the conclusion that Alberta was the appropriate jurisdiction for my matter. Later, the firm did state that they weren't sure of jurisdiction based on the issues. I, on my own, found the corporate information detailing that Ontario was the appropriate jurisdiction. Having said that, I ask you to look at the email in my previous post. Do you think that that email thread took 18 minutes to carry out on the part of the attorney? After reading some great reviews of Kahane Law here on Yelp, we decided to use them for the sale of our house (and purchase of the new one). My one issue was that it was often difficult to get a quick answer from the paralegal who was setting up our case. However, I probably had my expectations too high (i.e., they're busy people), and the conditions on the sale of our house required it to close quickly (the buyer needed it immediately). The lawyer handling our sale and purchase was Alaine, who was fantastic. She explained everything in what we were signing, and told us what we could expect over the coming weeks (in terms of money we could expect back from the sale of our house). When I asked them about the pricing for real estate purchasing, them give ma a list. when I am not sure about their pricing is based on the mortgage amount or the purchased price I send an email exact like this: is the price based on the mortgage amount? reply: YES! our price is based on the land tile fee blalblabla........... home value. you'd think the price is based on the mortgage amout at this point right? but no, at the appointment day I get the file and found price is high so I send another email like this: I thought I was told the price is based on the mortgage amount not the purchase price. reply: YES that is CORRECT, our price is based on purchase price. after this I was speechless........................ I'd expect my lawyer act like this on representing me, not using these techniques on me. let me guess how they are going to reply: 'YES, our talking skills are used to everyone.' read more

I wasn't at all impressed with my real estate purchase service. I waited longer than I felt was appropriate due to a boardroom overbooking. There were inconsistencies in the mortgage documents which were the fault of the mortgage company but which the paralegal on file should have noticed and addressed. Most importantly, the cheque wasn't sent to the sellers' lawyer in a timely fashion, thus delaying the closing. No one followed up to make sure the problem was corrected and I am still awaiting hearing back on some other loose ends around fence lines. read more

Make sure you shop around! I requested estimates from ten legal shops in Calgary for each of a relatively routine residential buy and sell transaction. When comparing the aggregate fees (incl disbursements, GST, etc) Kahane was most expensive. One firm didn't reply to my request for an estimate, so maybe Kahane Law is the second most expensive. Fixed fees are good, but only if they are competitive. Maybe the folks at Kahane Law are legal superstars and can save you money elsewhere in the transaction. Dunno. But for routine residential real estate transactions, there's not much variability beyond the legal fees themselves. read more

I want to thank Jeff Kahane for personally reaching out to me after learning of some concerns we had after working with them to purchase our home. I was under the impression that they had to send our title to our HOA but after speaking with Jeff he clarified that land titles is not only running behind, but that they typically don't send that off to anyone but the home owner. He pulled our title and emailed me a copy right away. There was also some miscommunication between the sellers of the house and their lawyers regarding city tax payment, resulting in us being charged a penalty for late payments (payments that were due before we took possession). When I discussed this with Jeff he said that he would look into this further as it seems their paperwork was correct and the sellers were supposed to have paid for the month. Jeff called me back right away to confirm this was the case and is working with the other law office to get us reimbursed. I did have some issues with phone calls not being returned, but after speaking with Jeff he informed me that our contact there had been on holidays and apologized for any lack of communication on their end. I am quite impressed with Jeff and his desire to ensure good customer service. I really appreciate his taking the time to clarify some misunderstandings and to help me better grasp what their role is in the process of securing our home. read more

We appreciated the clear and transparent pricing on their web site. Dave West quickly understood our objectives, and was very helpful in explaining the process to be followed. When we met with him for the transactions, he was prompt and very well prepared, had accurately calculated the percentages, and clearly explained the details. The fees were very fair. Given the repeat nature of the transactions, Dave proactively gave us a modest fee reduction for the second transaction, a nice and appreciated courtesy. We used this firm because the bank we got the mortgage through uses them. I was unimpressed from the get-go. We had been out of the country when the purchase of our house went through so the bank sent our info to the firm. Less than a week before the possession of our house I contacted the firm and asked what was expected of us. Thus ensued a flurry of panicked emails from me to the mortgage broker as the paralegal admitted that at first she had no record of our mortgage info, then that she couldn't open the file once she did find the email. This is our first house purchase and I was already a little stressed about it. The lawyer we met with was very personable and professional and put a lot of my fears to rest. She explained that if all went well with the purchase that within a few weeks of the possession date we would receive a package containing all of the final paperwork. So, I waited. And I waited. Finally, a month after we took possession I emailed the paralegal. I did not receive a response. So a week later I emailed again. Then I left a voice mail. After leaving a message looking for an update I finally got a response. Unfortunately the returning email was full of bad grammar and spelling mistakes which did not ease my concerns. I was given quite a few excuses as to why my file was not finished and assured that it would be resolved soon. I started emailing the paralegal once a week asking for an update. A few weeks ago I emailed the lawyer that we met with, who assured me that she would follow up with the paralegal and get our info to us soon. I received the final paperwork nearly four months after the possession date of our house. If this is a normal time frame to finish up paperwork it would have been appreciated if we had been told that, not that it would only be a few weeks. From the beginning my experience with this firm was not positive for me. I would not recommend this firm to new home buyers, as it is very stressful to not be kept in the loop on your own new home. read more
