Prior to drafting this review, I simply googled "elements of a great real estate agent," and among the hits was the following list: knowledge of the purchasing process, knowledge of the real estate market, honesty and integrity, responsiveness, communication skills, & negotiation skills.
Admittedly, it would have been more prudent to research prior to embarking on my first-time homebuyer's journey; so imagine my gratitude to have happened upon Kadjolo Coulibaly, a realtor who checked every box. (first name pronounced "Ca * Joe * Low") Read-on for detail.
Through his many free seminars (which I discovered via the Meetup app), Kadjolo demonstrated his knowledge of the purchasing process, which provided comfort and made me interested to work with him as my realtor. He also demonstrated his knowledge of the real estate market by sending market reports and expansion information for the areas where I was looking to buy. Through his unfiltered commentary on the suitability of the properties we were viewing, Kadjolo demonstrated that he is an honest and integrous person. He never tried to pressure me in the simple hopes of rushing a sale, and he actually took the time to explain what was happening at every phase of the process. He quickly made himself available any time I wanted to see even a single property. And, he let me know ahead of time whenever he'd be traveling--irrespective of the fact that he often still worked while away; so his responsiveness and communication skills truly went hand-in-hand. Most notably though, Kadjolo was a keen listener when it came down to what I wanted in home. With each new property he further noted my preferences and aversions to the point where he eventually knew which properties I'd like or dislike even before I'd known myself. (It's worth stating that he still showed me the properties and gave me the space to make those calls myself until I requested otherwise.) Finally, when I didn't have the highest bid and needed closing assistance as well, he demonstrated that he had the proper negotiation skills to get the job done. With Kadjolo's negotiation skills and my hand-written offer letter, we were able to secure the contract for the home I now own!
If I could identify one area for improvement, I'd say I would've appreciated a smoother closing procedure. When it came to making sure all of the seller's concessions were handled, having the "final walkthrough" so close to the scheduled closing date meant I had to eat some of those repairs myself, or miss the closing target. Also, I never did receive some of the keys (namely the mailbox key and the storm door key), and this cost me the expense of having them replaced.--However, I will say that I've discussed these matters with Kadjolo, and he was not only receptive to the feedback, he offered alternatives to help.
I closed on my home, which I love, just over a month ago, and Kadjolo and I still communicate. I would gladly work with him again as he was an invaluable help to me through-out the process. He's definitely earned my recommendation. read more
