Decided to stop by Berlin after visiting Paris. A few hours of solo time was given; I was excited but didn't know where to go. I wanted to eat, and I wanted to eat. My meal had to be fresh and tasty, but most importantly, it had to be quick since I had only a little less two hours of my precious solo time. Several options were suggested by the concierge. Eeny, meeny, miny, moe... I was directed to go to KaDeWe. KaDeWe reminded me of Saks in NY, Harrods in London, or maybe Mitsukoshi in Tokyo. Struggling with my own temptation to shop and browse around in this huge department store, I managed myself to go straightly to the food court. As soon as getting out of the elevator, I was like wow.. No, uh uh, like WOW!! There were so many delis, meat, fish, sweets, and everything. I walked to one of the small counters that had pretty displays of fish plates, and sat down on a tall barstool. As I saw some lovely champagne bottles, I asked for a glass of Pommery and Moët along with a fish plate. The fish was very fresh. Loved the texture which you can only feel from fresh fish. People who work behind the counter were friendly but very polite. They spoke English and told me where I should go and see. I finished my meal and said thank you and left the counter. It was one unforgettable quick meal with quality. The short conversation with the workers made it even more pleasant. I even had enough time to pick out some ties and scarves which I found pretty high quality, that made me, of course, very happy. I will give myself a few days, not a few hours to explore the whole building next time. And I won't just stop by; I will make it as a destination. I can't wait. 5 stars. Danke schön. read more

I'm not a fan of shopping too much but I have to say this mall would be one of the best that I have seen.. It offers 7 floors of shopping from high end stores to kids department! All first 5 floors are clothing and goods but when you reach to 6th floor, this is where it gets more interesting..gourmet food court in a shopping mall? And yes I'm talking about gourmet food from sushi bars to lobster and from pastry to cheese boutiques. And it's very affordable as far as the pricing goes! Taste wise excellent and top of the line fresh seafood.. Everything is prepared in front of you.. So many people eating here mostly tourists probably and yet the service is great, fast and friendly! Wine beer anything you can imagine is here! If you go to Berlin this mall is a must see and experience the food court on 6th floor! 7th floor is a buffet and you can also choose huge variety of food selection..we ate here 3 times out of 7 days lol..KaDeWe! read more

Amazing Store for All things Amazing! There's something about KaDeWe that is ridiculous.....ly cool! Yeah Yeah lots of Yelpers talkin''bout how boring this place is and I kinda agree. It looks like Saks, Bloomies, Neiman Marcus or some department store, until your food spirits are awakened as you go past the 5th floor. What's cool about it? If you're looking for something to buy, there are at least a few brands and all the best, not some cheap quickly-made-in-China type stuff. I'm talkin' well crafted, design impressive items you're in awe that you can buy such a thing. But it ain't cheap. You pay for quality here and that's why you come here. If you're looking for beer for example, there are hundreds of brands. Ridiculous.......ly cool collection of beer. I shopped for tea infuser for a gift and found 30 well designed infusers.....ridiculous.......ly cool and amazing. RUNDOWN OF KADEWE: So quick rundown. The first floor is like walking down Rodeo Drive or 5th Avenue and shopping streets in major cities. Gucci, LV, Prada blah blah blah. These labels are very BH, NY, Milan, Paris, Singapore, Tokyo, Paris yada yada yada.... Not interesting to me. Except, after the boring designer stuff, the 2nd-5th floors carry really good, well made, unique (albeit expensive) department store things. I bought a German set of metal luggage way better than any of the designer stuff and will last longer than any designer luggage, at Kadewe. 7TH HEAVEN AND 6TH FLOOR TOO The 6th floor is where it's at for me, I call it the "grocery store" but unlike any you've seen. I've never been to Harrods but Kadewe is honestly way better than Dean & De Luca, Whole Foods or any high-end American food store, even better than Eataly. There are things you can buy here like like Jamon from Spain cut from the leg. There was a display I admired where they featured jamon being sliced. The leg (feels like the entire animal) is on a rotating pedestal while a chef surgically pares a piece of jamon for you to sample. Jamon infused with olive oil was freakin' out of this world deeeeelishus. It's the new craze in ham and its really really good. The chocolates display from all over the globe is impressive. Germans love chocolate and damn so do I. The most impressive collection to me was..... the Beer... super impressive. It's nice to see a world collection of beer on sale in one store. They do it well at Kadewe. On top of that there are different kitchens all over the floor where you can plop yourself on a stool and have a chef put together German fare, pasta alle amatriciana or a bouillabaise made to order. Or just have a piece of lobster split, cold seafood. This is second to Harrods (I hear) and even though I have never been, I'd prolly enjoy Harrods too. But they do it well at Kadewe. The 7th floor is Le Buffet and has everything cooked and ready to eat laid out, its expansive. The world food on display here was tempting but I'm in Deutschland, I'm gonna eat German. What I picked was wine braised beef , red cabbage, baked potato, what else? That with a glass of wine, Aschatz and dessert, the lunch was not cheap but excellently made, super tasty...only at Kadewe. You don't shop here everyday, that's not ridiculous......ly cool. But come here for a well made thing you can't get anywhere. 'Cuz they do it well at Kadewe. Always a great experience....but make sure your wallet is filled like a Casino-tourist in Vegas. The sales-ladies are very friendly, and abnormally well-groomed...which is always enjoyable to watch/experience. I like the ground floor, which gets special designs on different occasions...especially at christmas time it looks amazing. read more

Berlin's best department store, more like Selfridges and Harvey Nichols rolled into one but has the reputation of being Berlin's version of Harrods. I go here for the great selection of English language computer games and Tv Series on DVD.. you know just in case you can't wait a day for Amazon to deliver! If I am searching for ingredients and all the right cuts of meat I want then I head for the food Hall situated at the top of the building.I often go to get one thing and find myself still up there a couple of hours later with much more than I need. When I am feeling blue I wander around Tiffany downstairs, it doesn't take long as it's tiny! It tends to stock everything you can't find elsewhere. I get my Turkey from here at Christmas! The oyster bar is a great stop off point. The dairy counter should help all those who can't find the right cream for good old English recipes. Everything you expect from a department store this size and reputation. The window dressing is fab most of the time. Especially at Christmas sort of Fashion meets Fortnum and Masons, minus the food! read more

What a huge (6 floors) and extravagant mall!! Only downside is that it is VERY expensive. Other than that, each floor is categorized accordingly. The first floor is beauty products and luxury products (jewelry, perfume, etc.). It goes on to womens clothing, mens clothing, crafts, house interior, and so on. My favorite floor, which is a must see, is the top floor because it is the dining floor. It is ALL food and baked goods, there are also amazing chocolate stands. read more

This is the best department store in the world... Each time I am in Berlin I go here for something and I am never let down. Hugo Boss, Tod's shoes, Burberry, Mont Blanc - every time I want something specific it is here. Then.. after being here several times, I stumbled upon the 6th floor. I wanted a bottle of wine and some gourmet items to take to a friends house for dinner and it is like nothing I have seen in a store in the USA. Yes we have department stores, and I work in Manhattan and Saks and Barney's are great - but this those, plus something special. You can go to the 6th floor and have a glass of wine; have some cheese with that wine; have a full dinner; have a few oysters or exotic seafood you would have to scour manhattan for. On my second day in Berlin, I went to KaDeWe - Kaufhaus Des Westerns. One star for the size : From the outside this place does not show. Once inside, my goodness, it is huge ! Several stairs, elevators, shops, restaurants, everything you find you can find ! One star for the choice : Should you look for chocolate, you have the choice between a variety of chocolate - the best one ! Should you want clothes, accessories, household appliances, food, you can have it all. One star for the quality and one star for the price : With choice comes quality. And with quality comes price. Of course if you budget allows you, you can buy a bottle of water of 1 litre from the best scandinavian source for the reasonable price of 5Eur. It is the best for the best, meaning you ! Do you feel like some lobster for lunch today ? Here you go, the best preparation for you right here, right now ! One star for the star : Did I just happen to see Paul Bocuse ? Yes, I did. For you informaiton Paul Bocuse is a French chef based in Lyon who is famous for the high quality of his restaurants and his innovative approaches to cuisine. He is one of the most prominent chefs associated with the nouvelle cuisine, which is less opulent and calorific than the traditional cuisine classique, and stresses the importance of fresh ingredients of the highest quality. Paul Bocuse claimed that Henri Gault first used the term, nouvelle cuisine, to describe food prepared by Bocuse and other top chefs for the maiden flight of the Concorde airliner in 1969. Are you convinced ? :D One star for the whole package : I spent a great time going from floor to floor, wandering around and looking at all the beautiful products gathering is this modest shopping centre. Great luxury shopping if you're into that sorta thing. The highlight is the top floor food hall: part grocer, part specialty foods purveyor, part bar/tavern, part party catering spot... you can get canapés for your shindig, visit the veggie stand, butcher or fishmonger for fresh groceries, buy special regional food (there's a US food section, Mexican, Japanese etc), or grab lunch or dinner at one of the bars/restaurants. There's a burger joint and a new BBQ place up there. I had champagne and canapés one evening. I have 4 stars because they other floors are all luxury goods but that's not what I came for! This place is huge with floors and floors of merchandise that you can spend your whole Saturday here which my friends and I technically did. The girls spent a majority of the time looking at clothes and accessories and we had fun trying on the ridiculous fur hats and leopard print earmuffs and taking pictures of ourselves much to the annoyance of the shoppers. However, the best part was the Christmas section. It's possibly some of the most beautiful arrangements I've seen so far. I loved all the wooden houses with their intricate details. Some even had light fixtures and furniture inside which reminded me a lot of dollhouses I've seen in the past. For a moment, I had the crazy idea of buying one then I saw the price tag on one of them - $300 and thought maybe not. Overall, KaDeWe fulfilled its function as an all purpose dept. store. I was able to buy wine, chocolate, a cool sweater without running all over town for it. It's perfect when you're only in town for the weekend. read more

I highly recommend a visit to this place if you have never gone to a full-on luxury store with high-end clothing, nice food courts, groceries, and a large selection of alcohol/pre-packed items. Legit, this place is very cool and I could have spent hours in there if I had the time. I was most impressed by the alcohol selection which had majority of more obscure/hard to find liquors. Aside from that, this place also has an amazing food/grocery/bakery/everything food related on the sixth floor (pretty similar to Eataly in NYC but much more expansive as it has more that Italian food.) I also very much enjoyed the food court on the 7th floor and wasn't expensive as expected compared to the rest of the mall. The seating area also has nice seats and if you get a seat by the window it's one of the taller buildings in the area so you can see everything. read more

Whew. This place was overwhelming, but in a good way. We wandered around the different floors but spent most of our time on the 6th and 7th. They had a wonderful variety of food available. I personally wouldn't go clothes shopping here unless I lived in Berlin because most of the brands they offer are accessible to me at home. Beautiful space all around. I don't really like shopping but KaDeWe is something that should be seen! They say it is the German Harrods (it is certainly expensive) but it is a lot better than that. Julia D and I spent a few hours going around the different floors but I would say that the top two are the best. There are loads of places to eat and you can perch on a stool to eat at the delis, it was a shame that I filled up on curry wurst prior to arrival. The very top is a more of a conventional food court but it is still a lovely space to watch the world go by with a beer. Even if you don't like shopping, I would recommend checking out KaDeWe. read more

The Kadewe has everything you need but it is expensive. The employees were really nice though, and talking to them was interesting because they told me and my tourist friends about Berlin. Specifically a shoutout to the guy at the Balenciaga counter who was cool and nice. I think they had a free bathroom which saved us and they even had a little fancy grocery store. read more

KaDeWe! I insisted on taking my husband here right away on our honeymoon. This store is a tourist attraction on its own. It has a ton of stuff and is like an entire mall within itself. Oh, and it has an awesome food court on the top floor. I was able to find smoked eel here to bring back home for my Oma who loves the stuff. This store has been around forever and it has a strong reputation. That also comes with high prices, but it's worth a stop in. Whether you just get a jar of jam, a nice suit, or a puzzle, this place is a must. I recommend going when you're hungry and checking out the food court. It's very impressive. KaDeWe is a bit like Harrod's in London - you can find just about anything you need here. I was at the post office across the square from KaDeWe and needed a tube to mail some posters that I purchased from the Helmut Newtown foundation near the Zoo station. The post office didn't sell poster tubes but the helpful Beamter told me to try KaDeWe. Sure enough, on one of the top floors is a great stationary section that sells *everything* you'd ever need for writing/mailing/recording stuff. I found the tube I needed, bought tape and felt tip pen - the store personnel helped me even pack the tube which I took back to the post office to mail to the States. Great experience. The food hall at KaDeWe is amazing and the luggage section has a good selection of the German-made "Rimowa" brand aluminum suitcases. There's also a branch of the Dolores Mexican restaurant nearby and an excellent organic sausage stand near the entrance to the subway (if you don't want to eat at the food hall). The KaDeWe is what Babylon must have been like. A vertical city-in-city, there's nothing the KaDeWe ("Kaufhaus Des Westens" - "Department Store of the West") doesn't have. Floors and Floors of every imaginable consumer product, from clothing to cosmetics to entertainment systems to fine china, you could spend days in here finding everything you'd even want and all you'd ever need. The KaDeWe really is a sight to behold and if you're in Berlin, a must-visit. Plan ahead a few hours, wear comfortable shoes and feel free to arrive nippy - the bistro at the top floor is unlike any other shopping center bistro you've ever seen. read more

This place claims to be Europe's largest department store, and after I've been lost in it a few times, I would not disagree. For the most part, I tend to visit only the kitchen section and the food courts on the 6th and 7th floors, so my review is going to be a little biased. Regarding the kitchen equipment, I think this place is hard to beat, as they have just about everything that one can wish for. But at a price, so often I would mosey out and get the same thing somewhere else. The food court on the 6th floor consists of sensational little stores divided into themed sections, such as champagne bars, truffles and sweets, fresh meat, fish, wurst (or sausages), wines, vegetables, etc. I always come here to buy the salmon and tuna for my sushi nights, though it's not cheap but at least I know that the quality is AAA. I often get hungry in the presence of so many delicacies, and in that case, there are many little food bars where one can grab a bite and a nice wine. My favourite is Fischkutter where I can recommend the scallops, fried in butter and herbs in front of you. One more level up is the public canteen, where one can load up trays of food freshly cooked at the counters around the place. I've only eaten here twice and I think the butterfly pork loins were pretty good for 8-9 Euro. KaDeWe is not a place where one can dash in and out with a quick shopping list. There is so much variety that one always end up mooching around for hours. In short, be prepared to be constantly and pleasantly distracted, and just enjoy yourself in the widespread decadence of the place. read more

Given the hype about this place, I expected greatness. Instead, it's just a normal department store. Only much, MUCH worse. I went here on a freezing, ice cold day in November. Specifically, I was there to spend EUR1000 on an Apple laptop. I just wanted to buy it, get in and out quickly. They're supposed to open at 10am, exactly when I arrived. But on this particular day they had signs on the doors saying they were having a meeting and they would be opening at 10:30. Ok, a bit strange, but I can wait. 10:30 came and went. 11:00 came and went. People who were waiting were starting to leave. Finally, after standing in the freezing cold for over an hour and a half, they opened the doors at 11:30. Before I even walked in the doors, I hated KaDeWe with the passion of 1000 fires. Understandably, after waiting 1.5 hours, I had to use the bathroom. Immediately after entering, I asked the closest employee where it was. She barely acknowledged me and waved her hand in the general direction of THE ENTIRE STORE, while muttering something incoherent. I'm not 100% sure about the language rules on Qype, but the things I would like to say about KaDaWe would surely break them. Terrible, Horrible, Insulting. read more

Having heard all about this store from friends, and more importantly being told how the food hall was "like Harrods, only better", I arrived with high expectations. Yes, the food hall is superb, especially the way that coffee (with cake!) and food stalls entice you to eat while walking around. Why, oh why can we not have a department store like this in Los Angeles?!? Of all places in the world, we could keep it busy. Espeically at the Beverly Center, Americana, or Grove! This store has at least six GIANT floors (I didn't get past six as we ran out of time and I think we spent most of it on the sixth floor) and had pretty much everything you could ever imagine. As it is in Germany, all the clothing and furniture were very Euro style which is chic and modern. If I lived in Berlin, I probably wouldn't shop anywhere else. Someday we'll have to discuss why the clothes in Europe are so much better, but another time... The sixth floor of this shopper's haven is an upscale grocery store/restauarnt. Groceries are cheap here and the assortment of chocolate and cheese is something one dreams about and is maybe only outdone by heaven itself! If in Berlin, do NOT forget to go here! read more
