When in Berlin visit KaDaWe and go directly to the 6th floor. There you will find gourmet food counters and restaurants. It's similar to Harrods in London or the magnificent department stores found in Tokyo. Oh my! You can get anything here! Amazing pastries, high end chocolates, charcuterie, huge cheese counters, smoked fish of all varieties, fine wines, specialty restaurants and much, much more. We enjoyed delicious crab sandwiches. Kaufhaus des Westerns is sehr groß and reminded us of Bloomingdale's on Lexington Ave (NYC) but in Herald Square proportions. It's huge and an absolute treat shopping here and I haven't even discussed the two food floors on 6 & 7. Wow. The quality of their offerings is impressive and upscale while also somewhat eclectic as well. We also found their prices to be fair and not obnoxious. Everything expensive is here - LV, Chanel, YSL, Dior, Rimowa, Bvlgari, Boss, even Laderach and Laduree! They have tax refund processing on one floor but we unfortunately weren't able to take advantage of it. The food court on the top floor (awesome architecture/views for a foodcourt) and cafes (plus dessert selection) are heavenly! I could stay and eat here all day! Went there summer, will be back during winter to check out their holiday decors! read more

They have everything you could think of and of the best quality. They carry all the high-end brands at great value. Our favorite place is the top floor with an upscale food court. Now, this review is partially my fault as I visited KaDeWe the Saturday after Black Friday so it was PACKED. Plus as a Minnesotan, my mall standard is a little higher. So I think KaDeWe is somewhere you should definitely visit if you have time during the day on a weekday NOT around the holiday season. But you don't need to go out of your way for it unless you specifically need something from a high end department store. OMG this place was amazing. I've never seen anything like it. We came here to try to have dinner but we waited too late and everything was too crowded. We kind of ran through or I would have gotten more pictures. There's all kinds of restaurants, like something for everyone and it's laid out so cool, it's like a bunch of little restaurants all in one place. We didn't shop here but it looked like you could find everything you need in one place (high-end). I've never seen a "mall/food hall" like this one. Germany's equivalent of Harrods and Galeries Lafayette, this large department store is spread over eight floors and is the second largest department store in Europe (after Harrods). Founded in 1907, the store was gutted in World War II but partly reopened in 1950, fully reopened in 1956, and expanded in 1978 and again after (reunification) during 1989-1996. As you might expect, it's focused pretty much upmarket, with the ground floor housing fashion accessory concessions - think designer jewellery, handbags and watches - alongside a huge cosmetics and perfumery department. Notable are the food floors (6th and 7th floors) which, for my money, knock spots off Harrods' equivalent. Ok, so the interior isn't grand, but it's extensive (the size of two soccer pitches according to their PR), and a key feature are the dozens of food counters (6th floor) where you can sit down and eat fresh seafood, cheeses, grills, items from the various delicatessen, and of course sausages - serviced by over 100 chefs and 40 bakers. The Germans clearly have a sweet tooth, as the confectionery area is also substantial: it's famous for the 2m wide model of the Brandenburg Gate - in marzipan (itself a north German specialty). On the eight floor, it is worth seeing the large rooftop "Winter Garden" restaurant with its impressive glass roof. My only gripe is navigation: there are few maps, and the layout, with multiple banks of similar-looking escalators, can be very confusing indeed. read more

Foodies, stop what you're doing and plan a trip to Berlin's KaDeWe right now. I mean it. Go. You owe it to yourself! I visited this famous German department store solely for their famed food hall. I was not disappointed. The food hall rivals the very best in the world (yes, better than the one at Harrods in London). It's sprawling and laid out with a mixture of sit-down restaurants, counter and bar service, takeaway cases, and food department store style shops. I spent a couple of hours noshing on small snacks at several different venues. There's also a fantastic cafeteria on the upper level which is a great place for a hearty and healthy lunch. I almost lost it when I saw that they had fountain Coke and AN ICE MACHINE! It's nearly impossible to get ice in a soda in Europe. All I can say is go here if you love food. It's awesome! read more

As an American, this department store was very interesting to me. It is an open concept and almost looks like the brands that are there have their own shops. It is a luxury department store like Harrods in London. They have desserts and food on the top floor, which was lovely and a nice restaurant. I've been to Harrods and in Paris you have seen Galleries Lafayette. Even in Japan the shopping does not compare to KaDe We. It is majestic and filled with all the latest name brands and fashion. This is the craziest, most amazing department store/food hall I have ever seen. Forget the shopping, go straight to the food! The food is located on the top 2 floors. The very top consists of somewhat of a buffet. Grab a tray, maybe a roller cart, pick out what you'd like, and pay for your items at the register. They have so many options including alcohol and desserts. It's so hard not to grab one of everything. Take the escalator down and you'll hit the small restaurants. We ended up going to a spot that specialized in schnitzel. Definitely wasn't disappointed. The food was fantastic. One tip? Be patient. This isn't a grab and go. After you eat, check out the dessert spots also...and maybe do some shopping to walk off the calories. Haha. This is a must stop if you're in Berlin. read more

This is the Bloomingdale's of Berlin. Where all the tourists come to shop; where the rich locals go to drop some euros. Basically, my unfancy self can't afford anything in this fancy store. Except maybe something from the food hall on the 7th Floor. I will happily drop some hard earned cash on hand dipped chocolates. Sip on some fine champagne. (they have Veuve as their standard and a vintage Laurent Perrier -- don't ask how much was per glass; I had a cheap prosecco from Italia) Pair your expensive bubbles with even more expensive caviar. For those who are starving, (because when you shop, you burn calories) KaDeWe has a very enticing prepared hot foods section and also a seafood stall where you can purchase everything your little heart desires. Just swipe your credit card. Since we were on a budget (bf saved the euros to buy me MK shoes!) we shared the oh-my-gawd strawberry shortcake while sitting next to the window overlooking the streets below. Wow, this place is big and the best way to describe it is its Germany's version of Harrods. On the top floor there's a huge food hall where you can eat and buy other little tasty treats. Also if you're looking for a food souvenir this is a good place to check out too. On the street level floor you'll find the designer shops its like being on 5th Ave. in NYC or Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills on this floor with well known designer duds. On the other floors you'll basically find a wide assortment of items that you'd see at a typical department store. Coming from Las Vegas, there isn't a shortage of luxury malls with designer shops; however, what Vegas doesn't have is a shopping center with a fancy grocery store. That reason alone is why I enjoy shopping at KaDeWe. Forget Gucci bags and Omega watches. Give me chocolate shaped like Smart Cars and a lobster to go! The top floor is dedicated to just food. There, you'll find sections for chocolate (yes, a chocolate section!), coffee and teas, seafood, vegetables and fruits, and DESSERTS! Furthermore, there's also several restaurants and food stations on the same level. What separates this specialty grocery store from others is the uniqueness of items. Chocolate *said in Sloth voice*: No Baby Ruth's here. Chocolates aren't the common grab-and-go variety that you find near the grocery check-out aisle. In addition to the plain milk, white, and dark chocolates, flavors like white chocolate with coconut and curry are examples of what you may find. Coffee and Teas: KaDeWe's coffee and teas aren't the kind that can be found at a chain coffee shop. Rather, there are experimental flavors, such as strawberry flavored coffee. You can also have a cup of joe at the coffee bar (makes sense that they would have one there). Desserts: They're appealing to the eyes, but in the past I've been disappointed. I bought a slice of Sachertorte that was unfortunately very dry. On the other hand, that's not to say I wouldn't return to try the other pastries and cakes. Restaurants: There are both restaurants and food stations the serve different cuisines. One that I would recommend trying is the crepe station -- one of the more budget friendly choices -- where you can order savory and sweet crepes. Aside from food, I did visit the other levels, but only briefly. The one level that did appeal to me was the bookshop/stationery and toys level that has a small Sanrio section that was severely lacking in the variety of characters and products. But eh, that's just me being picky. If you're looking for souvenirs to bring home, KaDeWe is a good place to visit. Prices can be steep depending on what you buy, but for the most part there's something for everyone. read more

Please. Don't even insult this place by comparing it with Bloomindale's. Bloomys is great, but it's a small, crumb-sized shadow in the presence of the great KaDeWe. Unless you enjoy window shopping, skip all the shopping floors, because, seriously, can you afford Hermes and Prada? You can? Okay, great; buy me a Rolex. Le Buffet, on the top floor, boasts a giant semi-circular window and a fantastic variety of food and drink. You choose your items, and then pay at the end, per dish. It ain't cheap, but it's really, really good. Chanterelles were in season and their creamed mushroom sauce was so rich, creamy and delicious, I wanted to pour it all over myself. The floor below is the gourmet foods floor. I was advised to sit at the oyster bar and order a few raws and a glass of champagne. It's certainly a classy way to start the morning! Check out the oyster shucker - it's customer made just for KaDeWe. Next, make your rounds to plan your own feast. You can buy meats, cheeses, seafood, desserts, teas, candy, etc. There's a small pastry bar that makes a beautiful looking hot cocoa topped with heaps of fresh whipped cream. Great burger At the food hall at KADEWE dept store! It is on the topfloor of the store and is a little burger bar! I tried the season's special which was made with a buffalo meat patty, roasted peanuts, sweet potato salad and BBQ truffled sauce! It was really exotic and tasty, and the truffle tasted strong, which I loved! I would definitely come back but would order the classic one with the sweet potato chips, it looked amazing! Its a bit pricey but worth it, and it's really well served(i coudn't finish mine). I was only disappointed by the fact that they only had one type of beer! I remember this place from the 90s and literally nothing had been modernized for the past 20 years. You can get overpriced sea food here or pay €13 for a baked potato that is literally just nuked in the microwave with half a stick of butter on it... Good, I guess? At any rate if you're under 55 I would recommend shopping online like modern people or going to Bikini Berlin across the street which also has much much better food. read more

This is specifically about the chocolate shop on the 6th floor at KaDaWe. The selection is vast, prices are more than fair and the service is very good. It is a great day when I can find Michel Cluizel, Teuscher and German chocolatiers such as Lauenstein in the same shop. A couple hundred € and a half an hour and I was able to stock my supply and get gifts for my chocolate appreciating friends. This is a traditional shopping mall in several levels like I have seen in England, USA, Sweden etc. Saw nice stuff, but it was ridiculously pricey. The giant sneaker section gets an extra shout-out, but I think it might have been the mens section. So head there if you love sneakers. Food: The 6th floor is like a deli with counters where you walk up and they make what you want on the spot. Each place has seating and sometimes you could sit at the bar. It was appealing and looked fresh and tasted delicious and seemed decently priced. They also have champaigne, prosecco etc. I would go back there as it feels like a little oasis in the bustling city. read more

I have heard so many things from Kadewe from friends or on news, so I was really looking forward to visit it. Eventually I did come and it really disappointed me. Yes, it might be probably the biggest department store in Europe, but there is no personality of this place. The building outside it actually looks nice, but there are nothing really special inside. I have seen many department stores just like this one, since I heard so much nice thing about it, let's say I expected at least they will have their own style to stand for their name. It was simply too commercial and lacking their own uniqueness. I honestly think the interior design from Bikini Berlin, Mall of Berlin and Boulevard Berlin are much better than here, very clear concept and identical. What I do like here, they always have really good shopwindow designs, season to season, theme to theme, very creative and elegant. Pity, didn't see this kind of style inside. They do have many different big brands inside, but most of them are very pricy. The clerks here are ok, but not really friendly. Honestly, I think this place is totally overrated, it didn't impress me at all. I heard and read many positive things about the Food Court here, although I already visited there couple time, I haven't it really got the chance to try it out yet. I will visit again just for this. This shop is incredible!!! It's spread over six floors (the seventh is a restaurant) and the choice here is just immense. It's more like Harrods and would definitely put BTs or Arnotts in Dublin to shame. The amount of choice in brands here is fantastic. That's before you get to the food court on the sixth floor. Here is the jewel for me as its where you can choose from Veuve Clicquot & Moet champagne bars, coffee stands and tea stands (although that's probably an injustice to call them that!) and then the food!!! OMG all the different meats, cheeses, chocolate, condiments etc on that floor. I'd say you could spend a week on that floor and not sample everything. You can get here easily by bus or u bahn and it should definitely be on your must do list in Berlin! read more

Really expensive store with subpar customer service. For a store in this price range, I expect better service. Employees are often chatting with each other ignoring when you try to ask to see a product. I asked for the bathroom, on employee ignored me, had to find another who only said "it's over there" without pointing to where "over there" is. We are spoiled in the States with customer service - it seems to be the norm here in Berlin but when a store carries such high end brands and charges exuberant prices for all their products, you'd think they'd offer better service. The same bread that costs 15 cents in all other stores, costs 50 cents here, just consider the price difference. As for the store, it has multiple levels from clothing to kitchenware. The top two levels are restaurants and mini gourmet stations selling food. You can find good food here and great desserts but be prepared to pay KaDeWe prices. read more

Word on the street is Harrod's is pretty darned big-- but from what I remember, KaDeWe is supposed to be the biggest department store in Western Europe. The entrance level is chock full of stuff the average Jane can't afford, but I did manage to snag a funky printed skirt for something like 60 Euro. There was a lot of fur. KaDeWe is a giant, upscale department store. After passing by multiple stores that were far too expensive for my budget, I made a beeline for the 5th floor. The 5th floor is definitely the best floor of the department store as it is the floor for food. There are so many options for food, and I went straight for the bakery. After looking at all the delicious cakes, I decided on a berliner. I got the plum filled berliner, and it was the best one I had in Berlin. It was soft and fluffy, and it was full of filling. It was more expensive than the other berliners I've had at €1.90, but that was expected considering the place I was in. It was also well worth the price. I was like a kid in a candy store! I didn't really understand why people raved about this mall. Afterall, there are plenty of great malls in the U.S., so what makes this mall so amazing? The 6th Floor. Well, the 7th floor is their "food court." It's hardly a food court because that just sounds so pedestrian. They serve fresh seafood, delicious salads and artfully designed desserts. You can opt for Asian cuisine or authentic and hearty German food or choose from their fresh salad bar. There's even an array of fresh juices to choose from. So 30 euros later, I had a really full plate of food. Now, the 6th floor. Wow. It's just a luxury foodie's dream come true! Gourmet cheeses, artfully decorated cakes, pastries, breads, caviar, alcohol, expensive chocolates, beautifully packaged gift baskets, and so much more. I could've wandered through here for hours and would have no concept of time. It's just amazing and very worth a visit. And of course, if you're looking for any kind of luxury goods (i.e. Chanel, Gucci, Burberry, etc.), you'll find them here too. read more
