We were in need of a yard clean up before a large family reunion party and I found K. Macken Landscaping from Google. Not only did Kevin answer his phone right away, he also came that afternoon to discuss and make recommendations for our yard. He sent me a quote and within two days,about a week before the party, his crew was at my house weeding, mulching, cutting and reseeding areas of our lawn where we had some trees removed. He kept me informed of his plan for his crew to return the day before the party for another cut and to clean up anything else that was needed. During that time, we also had a fence installed and some of the seed and woodchips needed to be filled in. I called Kevin and it was not a problem at all. He seeded some more, covered the patches with hay and added additional woodchips. I was so impressed, especially since we have never used a landscaper and on such short notice. He was so accommodating and really made our yard look beautiful in time for the party. In the past I attempted to use other landscapers over the past 30 years but always ended up taken care of my landscaping myself. I have never found a company that I trust or could do it as good as me. I am very picky and believe the little details adds to the overall quality & beauty of the work. However, by the Grace of God, I found Kevin Macken. Usually, you would have to leave a message and wait for a call back. What first impressed me was Kevin answered his own phone and we met immediately. He gave me a very reasonable price and came to my home when scheduled & on time. When we purchased our home in 2007, we decided to stick with K.Macken Landscaping, who was already maintaining the property. They were also handling the landscaping for 2 other homes on the street so we figured they must be pretty good. After a short time, we got to know the owner Kevin, who is very pleasant and professional, as is his entire staff. They do a beautiful job maintaining the lawn throughout the warmer months, and an extremely thorough (and tough) job when it comes to cleanup on our acre of property. Over the years he has given us helpful landscaping advice and suggestions, and planted some very pretty, high quality trees and shrubs. We recently hired Macken for a rather laborious task which involved hauling A LOT of rocks.. His team worked very hard to make sure the job was done carefully and beautifully, and to our satisfaction. Kevin has been taking care of our property for two years and we have been very pleased with his work and his response whenever we have a question. Yesterday, he and his crew landscaped the front of our house. They worked hard all day in spite of the high temperatures we've been experiencing this week. All of the old, overgrown evergreens had to be removed and replaced with new plantings. Kevin even had his men move one of the old bushes that could be saved, to a different spot away from the front of the house. This was "above and beyond" what I had asked him to do. After planting the bushes we had picked out, Kevin decided that we needed some additional plants to fill some spots and he made a number of trips to the nursery to get more plants. He made very good choices and the finished product is pleasing to us. We love our house and we are happy that he helped us to give it the curb appeal it deserves. I just moved into a one family house in Montclair, NJ as of October 1, 2016 from living in an apartment. I was not familiar with anything regarding landscaping of any sort. However, with the Fall season it had become apparent that I needed to either familiarize myself with raking a mass amount of leaves or hiring a landscaping company. I chose the latter. While looking for reputable companies, I came across several, and spoke to several. However, "K Macken Landscaping" was the most knowledgeable and helpful for what I was looking for. Kevin explained to me what I needed to know. In addition, his workers were prompt, courteous, professional, and the job was done neatly. Same as a few other reviewers mentioned, he came out to look/quote us on a job a while back for some regrading and retaining wall. He was nice enough, not overly friendly. Quick 5 mins if that of talking, and he said he'd send an estimate. Never got it... and no response back to me when I reached out a week or 2 later. I made a mental note because the guy that came out had a quietly odd demanor, plus never got back to me. It seems this is the MO of so many landscapers/contractors... so when you find one that's nice, dependable, trustworthy, AND good at getting back to you keep with them. Maybe he was having a bad day, but this guy wasn't any of those things, at least to us. To be fair, I give him a 3 only because I can't comment on the actual landscaping services. read more

We contracted with Kevin to do some landscaping work for us and could not be more pleased. Kevin always answers our e-mails immediately. His crews are very hard working and do an excellent job. The day after our landscaping was completed, our area was subjected to a Flash Flood. Because of the unusual amount of rain, which could not be handled by the sewers, some of our plants were uprooted and the mulch was just washed away. I e-mailed Kevin on Sunday, and Monday his crew was here replanting our plants. Tuesday they were here replenishing our mulch. I had neglected my yard this past Fall and was in need of a clean-up before 2 of my daughters get married this year. Many of my neighbors use K Macken Landscaping and their lawns look great. Called Kevin last minute in order to take care of a dead tree dangerously leaning against the neighbor's property. I sent him pictures of the situation over the phone and we agreed on starting 8am the next morning. The crew came on time and took care of the tree, and many other smaller jobs I needed. They were very nice, polite and got everything done in under one hour. We will be using them for general landscaping and maintenance moving forward. Very happy with this company's work and customer service. I do my own yard work but wanted a professional to come in and core aerate, overseed, and fertilize my lawn in one shot. I called several companies but most wanted a service contract or thought the job, standing alone, was too small. Our yard hasn't looked this good in 30 years after Kevin and his team did a full Spring cleanup, edging and mulch. Very efficient and thorough in their work and clean-up. I have had trouble in the past getting landscapers to come on their promise date and answering their phone. No such problem with K Macken.
