What was supposed to be a major renovation of my master bathroom turned into a stressful, dragged-out ordeal filled with false promises, lack of transparency, and ultimately legal threats.
Let's start with the basics. I signed a contract with Maxwell Restorations in May 2024 for a full master bathroom remodel. From the outset, I made it explicitly clear that I did not want any materials from Home Depot or Lowe's unless I personally approved them. I also asked for a 3D design or blueprint to help align on visual expectations--something any competent contractor should provide or outsource for a job of this magnitude. Only after signing the contract did I learn that Maxwell does not have an in-house design team, something that was never disclosed upfront.
I had to independently research and source design inspiration, materials, and fixture options--essentially doing the work that a licensed contractor should have helped facilitate. Despite my efforts, the communication from Maxwell was spotty at best. Suggestions were sent that were pulled from Google with links to mass-market retailers I had explicitly rejected.
When I asked to take over the material purchasing due to their poor communication, Maxwell agreed and issued a revised invoice. However, they never provided a clear or itemized list of the "standard tile materials" they expected me to buy--materials that most contractors typically include in their labor costs. Meanwhile, I had to adjust my renovation timeline due to legitimate personal and professional circumstances, including a death in my family, job-related injury, and unanticipated federal administrative changes that directly affected my employment--events I was open about and communicated with full transparency.
Despite this, Maxwell continued to move the goalposts, eventually referring me to an attorney and attempting to portray me as uncooperative and in breach of contract--all while keeping over $11,000 of my money for a project that never began. Not one tile was laid. Not one screw was turned.
Maxwell Restorations and its representative, David Bolt, claimed "damages" and "lost profit" on a job they never initiated, then had the audacity to act like they were doing me a favor by "not seeking more money." In reality, they failed to meet even the minimum standards of communication, transparency, or professionalism I would expect from a licensed contractor.
This was my first major renovation in my home, and Maxwell's handling of it was disorganized, misleading, and downright negligent. I will be filing formal complaints with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) and am fully prepared to escalate this to a legal claim if necessary.
My advice to anyone considering working with Maxwell Restorations: proceed with extreme caution. Demand clear scope documents, itemized pricing, and design support before signing anything. If you're expecting professionalism, transparency, or customer-first service--you won't find it here.
