Also, please note that while this is my experience, this practice has been serving Astoria for over 20 years, I hope other patients who have had better experience leave their reviews as well. We brought our son for an evaluation session for a stutter. The office staff did not book the appointment into the OT's calendar, when we arrived she had no idea we were coming. She spent less than 30 minutes evaluating our son, a process that should take between 60 and 90 minutes according to other professional speech therapists. Family Speech Center's staff initally told me over the phone that the evaluation would be covered and I'd owe only a copay of $50, but after the evaluation was done they charged our insurance $780 (for 23 minutes). The max our insurance allowed was $280, which I was forced to pay before they would share the written evaluation with us. The evaluation missed significant portions of our son's abilities when compared to a 90 minute evaluation from a second professional. The second professional that we saw said that therapy was unnecessary for the stutter at this age, and to keep an eye on the drooling and mucus flow. They noted that the first 20 minutes of a session is getting the kids into a relaxed state, and we should throw out the evaluation from Family Speech Center. UPDATE: I was contacted several times after leaving this review, first by the office manager in an email that claimed "The statements you made in the reviews are FALSE." After several emails exchanged, the partners contacted me and clarified their evaluation methodology. For their office, a 30 minute evaluation is standard if a patient does not show other signs that need further attention, and the provider had the audio recording with our son to review for her evaluation. They did offer a refund for the services or a second complimentary evaluation, which was polite, but I chose to decline both.

She immediately spots the problem and then, the miracle, has a method to address it. I personally met with Uri Schneider on two occasions about 10 years ago. My purpose for meeting…read morewith him was to address a stuttering problem that I felt was holding me back from living my life (specifically, finding a job and getting married). Even though I didn't meet with him for very long, the interaction that we had was transformative for me. I am now happily married and gainfully employed. The following advice that Uri gave me had a profound influence on me: 1. Life is bigger than stuttering. Many people who struggle with a stuttering problem convince themselves that their speech impediment will make it impossible for them to do anything with their lives. This is a very unhealthy way of thinking. Even if you experience interruptions in your speech, you should recognize that what you have to say is important, and people are interested in listening to what you have to say. Even though I still have a noticeable stutter, I have found that I am able to connect with people on an emotional level when I speak in public. This is something that I never imagined I would be able to do only several years ago. 2. Stuttering is essentially a physical problem and is not a reflection of a person's psychological state, level of intelligence, or emotional stability. Being able to educate others about what stuttering actually is makes it much less uncomfortable to discuss the subject. 3. The secondary behavior of forcing words out of your mouth is an important contributing factor that tends to exacerbate the severity of a stutter. I find that intentionally pausing between words or syllables greatly increases my fluency of speech. 4. It is critical to desensitize yourself to the reactions of other people to your stutter. Even though I am not naturally an assertive person, I have learned to speak up even in uncomfortable situations. I find that many people respect me more when they see the courage that I display. In my perspective, what sets Uri apart from other speech therapists who treat stuttering is that he understands the human impact of the disorder, and treats his patients as human beings with a challenge, rather than as machines that need fixing. While stuttering isn't a "curable" disorder, it is critical to address the emotional impact of it and learn how to cope with the problem. In my own situation, the severity of my stutter has gradually decreased over time. While this is not uncommon, I am aware that not everyone has the same experience.

One son had a male teacher, which a friend jealously said he'd had to wait till he was in 4th grade to get a male teacher. I liked all the teachers there. I love it that it's integrated, that people with disabilities are included, and they have a dedicated specialist staff. So friendly were a couple of assistant teachers that after work they would come to the park to keep playing with my sons, after work. That is just awesome. It's a very warm and lovely school which I highly recommend. The sad thing is that it's not just filled with kids from around there, and my sons lost a lot of friends because people came from all over the place to go to this school. My eldest told me he was going to get married to his first sweetheart here. I asked him who he wanted as his best man, and he was confused. I wondered to the teacher if it was a bit weird. She said it was intimacy and that's good. Later my son had other girlfriends. He sure was a player in this preschool. They let you spend the day with your child, which I've done a bunch of times. Openness in a school is very important to me, so I just found that so cool. I adore the staff there and thank them so much for all their hard work.
