Before going into all the details below, the only other saving grace to this nightmare was that his sub-contractors (for cabinets, for general work, and for countertops) were all helpful and when allowed, very communicative around their timelines and estimated completions. Now to the MASSIVE negatives...all around the General Contractor (GC) used by ServPro. For some context, after signing a contract on February 5, the project finished in late August. The GC did not go to our apartment any time after April. Once we signed the contract to rebuild, we began to have issues with the GC. Beyond estimating a May 1 deadline ("at the latest!") when we first signed with them in early Feb, the GC never managed our expectations at any point in this terrible process. When the GC's wife/assistant was brought onto the project in March to "help stay on top of him," we should have known that this was/is a known issue with the GC. He rarely knew what was going on at our project, and since he did not want us to directly communicate with his subcontractors, this meant his teams rarely knew what the job was on any given day. If my wife and I weren't diligent with our notes and keeping track of their commitments, the work done would haven't been what was agreed to and would have been even further behind schedule. Ex: the GC claimed to not know we changed our oven (from gas to electric) despite us buying through his reference and sending him all the specs/outlines of the changes months before taking delivery. As a result of his ineptitude, we had to reopen the ceiling (that we had JUST closed and repainted after installing recessed lights) to snake a more powerful electrical wire to the oven's electrical outlet. In addition, we now had to wait to set up a proper capping of the gas line with the city which could have been done in the weeks that we waited for the oven delivery. After multiple mistakes/delays like this, we made a formal complaint to his CEO as well as to my insurance contact, who was immeasurably frustrated with the delays to this project as well.

I explained that my family was still getting ready for the day and that we only have one bathroom, so I asked them to honor the original appointment window. Then, at noon, I received another call saying the technician was on the way. They didn't arrive until about 20 minutes later. Two technicians came in, looked at the drain issue, and quoted nearly $800 plus tax. Because this is the only bathroom in my home and I needed the problem fixed, I really didn't have much choice. I approved the work. Here's the part that bothered me: the entire job took less than 15 minutes. To be clear, the drain is working and the technicians were professional. I have no complaints about the quality of the repair. My issue is paying nearly $800 for what amounted to a very quick service call. When the technicians walked out the door less than 15 minutes after they arrived, it was hard not to feel like I had just paid an emergency premium price for a routine fix. To make matters worse, I continued receiving automated calls from Roto-Rooter trying to schedule the appointment that had already been completed and paid for. That gave the impression that the scheduling and customer service systems are not well coordinated. If you need immediate service and money is no object, Roto-Rooter will likely get the job done. If you have time to shop around, I strongly recommend getting multiple quotes first. Looking back, I suspect many local plumbers could have performed the same repair for significantly less.
