My favorites were the roasted pumpkin with slaw, the tender and flavorful meat patties, and the rice. The rice was so full of flavor and topped with almonds, raisins, and carrots. So yummy!! The cauliflower was surprisingly spicy. I am always pleasantly surprised with how good eggplant can be. Service was very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back to try some more Afghan treats.

They looked like they were closing up for the evening, as the pace was empty inside. The waitress greeted us and said they could accommodate us, but would only be able to serve us one dish, Mantoe (or Mantu in English?). It is almost like a dumpling stuffed with minced meat (beef or lamb), steamed, and then topped with tomato sauce, yogurt, lentil or chick pea bits, and parsley. The dish was very tasty, the savory meat mixed with the light yogurt and fresh herbs was a great combination. The bites were light, but there serving left you filled. The waitress explained that she and her sister work the front part of the restaurant mostly and her mother is in back cooking. The family feel came through not only in the food, but in the hospitality we received at a late hour when they were preparing to close. I would love to come back here again (if and when I make it back to Amsterdam) so I can try more dishes!

The staff was shockingly unprofessional--all of them had long, oily hair with no hair coverings, and not a single one wore gloves. Watching the chef prepare chapli kebab with bare hands was unsettling, and the lack of basic hygiene standards was apparent everywhere. The boss himself looked unkempt, adding to the overall impression of a place that doesn't prioritize cleanliness. At one point, we saw staff carrying uncooked meat with blood dripping onto the floor right in front of customers. The kitchen itself was filthy, with no proper cleaning standards in sight. I honestly don't understand how this restaurant has been operating for so long without intervention from Dutch health authorities. This place should face serious penalties for its complete disregard for hygiene. I wouldn't recommend Afghan Mama Restaurant to anyone--from England, Afghanistan, or anywhere in Europe. If you care about cleanliness and food safety, avoid this restaurant at all costs."

Apparently the manager's "friends" get service ahead of others in line. The man in charge was rude and had a bad attitude after making multiple customers wait while giving preferential treatment to some it appears. I don't understand how they could just ignore the line and serve who they prefer to. This is a disgrace and a pity they don't have to care because there is a big crowd lining up. I'm sure the food is great but a little bit of humility and common courtesy would go a long way.

It's tucked away in the alley and so it might look dodgy but trust google map directions and you'll get there! There's a great hookah area with carpets and cushions for seats, just slightly elevated off the floor, towards the back left wall. On this Wednesday night, we pretty much had the place to ourselves, apart from another table with a party of two. Amuse bouche for the table came in the form of two pieces of bread with some olives and a yogurt dip. The yogurt dip was delicious and the olives were salty and tangy, a perfect complement to the bread. We got these refilled twice as it took a good 30 minutes from when we placed our order to the food actually coming out. Not a lot of alcoholic drink options and I ended up getting a nice Fanta Cassis drink. For the main, my colleagues got the Patnoes Maza platter (this is humongous and honestly two ppl can easily share it!). I saw Borani (eggplant cooked in yogurt) and decided to get this instead of following the others. This dish came with a salad, rice (which they very kindly made veggie for me) and the bread. I loved the delicate use of spices (quite different from Indian) but honestly, there could have been a bit more eggplant on my dish. I ate some of the bread dry. I also got Firni- Afghan pudding for dessert. The rose-water & saffron combo tasted like soap to some of the others on my table, but I quite enjoyed it and would get it again. The crunchy pistachio and toasted almond mix on top was really quite delicious. Overall pleasant evening with good service and pleasing food. Yelp 222/ 2018

Made a reservation for Sunday night; while it wasn't super busy, I'd recommend making one just in case since it looked like only a couple tables were open. We ordered the babaganoush, the roasted mushrooms, and red lentil soup to start. Highly highly recommend the babaganoush. Note, it is not the typical blended eggplant, but chunkier. This doesn't sound super appealing, but trust me, this makes it so much better. Each bite has more flavor and texture this way. The soup and mushrooms were both great, but weren't standouts compared to the babaganoush. For our mains, we went with the sea bass and lamb chops. You might be able to tell from the photos, but the sea bass isn't how you typically have it in the states, where you get a slab of some fish. Instead, it's the whole fish so it's much smaller and it has EVERYTHING. I've had fish like this before so whatever, but I know there are people out there who are squeamish about having the fish head still on there with bones and stuff, so be warned! Though it'd be such a pity to let that stop you from trying it because it was amaaaaaazing. Lemon and mint seeped in every bite. They even stuffed it in the middle so the flavor wasn't just limited to the surface. The lamb was also perfectly cooked and mouthwateringly delicious. I read before coming here that Dutch people look down on eating with your hands. And I honestly tried to be sensitive forwards that. But omg it would've been a crime not to pick these up and gnaw on them like a friggin hyena. So I did #noregrets. Also care with a bunch of tasty sides - nom noms!! Didn't have enough room for dessert. Though something to note: not sure if it was bc it was a Sunday, but service wasn't particularly fast and we only got our mains at 910 pm after getting there at 745 pm. We didn't mind, but if you're in a rush, be aware. This might even be a Dutch thing; we were one of the last to arrive in our room, but we're on of the first to leave since basically everyone who got there before us were still sitting around and chatting long after we left. So...who knows! Anyway, it was super tasty and very affordable. Highly recommend!
