With efficient, pleasant service, a takeaway sandwich shop on street level and cafe tables overlooking the historic High Street on the floor above, it's a winner from the off. Valiantly holding forth opposite Skipton's unwelcome Costa, and serving breakfasts all day (including the richest yummiest Eggs Benedict you could think of) as well as lunches ranging from sandwich to burger, drinks from fizz to milkshake, well. Let's just say it's in my good books (and that's even before we get onto the fact that a burger and fries is under £6). It's got more soul than Caffe Capo and less froth than the Three Sheep. The chicken burger isn't that cop out that people seem to keep going for lately: just sticking a chicken breast in a bun. It's battered (so much better) and tender like a giant goujon. The milkshakes are thick and creamy and FULL of flavour. The strawberry is really something else. So what about that fifth star? It's tricky to say what that last bit of greatness could be, but for some reason, fab though I think this place is, I haven't fallen head over heels for it. I think it just needs a dash more personality, some quirk or kook in the decor, a little less functional. Somewhere unmistakeably Cafe 76. But they've focused on the important things first, as any Costa-competitor must, and it is working, because I just keep coming back.

When I saw this was going to open, I was super excited. New cafe! In my town! Yes! See, Skipton has a Costa, and more recently, a Caffé Nero, which opened a few doors down from Costa (boldly ignoring the council and little details like planning permission), and lots of cute shops have gone bust. See for example my beloved Russian Tea Room. Heartbreak. But here is Capo, a gigantic place as Skipton goes, and it just... Doesn't. Doesn't what? You ask. Just doesn't. It isn't entirely its own fault perhaps; it's always practically empty and short on atmosphere (cause or effect?) and the menu is disappointing: nothing but sandwiches and jacket tatties with uninspired and uninspiring fillings. The service, given the number of people in here when I went: slow. The fact is stretches back so far beyond the shop front means there's very little in the way of natural light, which you can capitalise on to make a cosy cave of a place, but they haven't. It's just all a bit DFS, or like it was built in The Sims: Hot Date: too blocky and repetitive. And my toasty, at just under four quid: nothing special. Shop bread and a lettuce leaf sitting disconsolately beside it. I mean, tasty enough, and if I'd got it from a cart at a festival I wouldn't mind, but not worth the price and not worth the ten minute wait. The weird thing is it feels like a chain coffee shop crossed with a cheap sandwich shop. It's having a massive identity crisis and needs to figure out what it wants to be, and fast. It's got a great location and a lovely space, and all the potential, but it isn't offering anything you can't get elsewhere and it isn't offering it at an equal standard. For my part, I'm going back to Cafe 76 for now.

I want to be clear that I'm not, and probably never will be, a vegetarian but I'm ok with missing my meat now and again and several of our party were vegetarian and between us we had a whole host of allergies and preferences (talk about problem families). So having surveyed the group here are our findings: The milk shake was very poor (this was unanimous) The prices were high for the food served, the food was sort of average, staff knowledge of ingredients and allergies was poor, staff were very patient and pleasant.

The food is varied, reasonably priced and caters for all diets including mine (vegan). The young couple who run it have exciting plans for its future and I'm looking forward to going back to see how those plans have come to fruition. Lunch here was the highlight of my day.

The bill for three courses 2 bottles of wine and 4 beers for four was less than a £100 , a winner all round, will definitely go again.
