I have studied with Zak for a little over a year in the Adult master class, and his teaching feels like magic. I don't really know how he does it, but it is truly a gift. The way he is able to speak to actors, adjust actors and connect with actors -- it is remarkable. ALL of the faculty at ZBS is extraordinary - I've been taught by and have coached with Zak, John, Michael, Graham, Kym, Sandi and Martha. They all care deeply about the students and the work! I have also taken their Pilot intensive, which was invaluable and practical. I learned so much. The energy of all of the students in the intensive was electric and exciting. The community at ZBS is also so close. I have made friends there that I know I will have for the rest of my life. We support each other. It never feels cutthroat or too "Hollywood." I've been in the industry since 1998 in another discipline and have been called to a few commercial auditions but have never taken a commercial acting class. His 'pearls of wisdom' definitely shone a new light on commercial castings for me. I've taken from a few studios in the Los Angeles area during the pandemic and this was the first time I had an experience where the teacher put their ego aside to help his students. He created a safe environment for us to explore, be vulnerable and most importantly have fun! Hal was able to cultivate an environment where we, as students, felt comfortable to ask questions and give each other, our peers, constructive criticism. The class was intimate in size so we each received individual attention and didn't feel like another face in the crowd. After completing his workshop, I feel way more confident walking into a casting and/or submitting a self-tape knowing I applied a majority of what I learned. We use Stanislavski's The Method, which in itself is so interesting, and Jaime ( who's an actor and director) really understands and knows how to transmit his knowledge of it so well. It's a lot of work but NEVER a dull moment, and you are guaranteed to improve. I am a novice, and when I started I was so nervous I could hardly move on stage. Now, I'm still a little nervous, but can't wait to get up there and do the scene. There's no criticism, we just work and practice the tools. If you're looking for a lot of feedback, this class doesn't do that- it doesn't have to; you feel when you get it or you don't- You're given the tools, and Practice Practice Practice !!
