Been with UCU for years, but had to close account. They were great for many years, but it seems as…read moreif their rates and fees aren't any better than traditional banks. I financed my first car though them and it was terrific (which is why I gave them 2 stars). Fast forward 20 years. Got a fraudulent withdrawal request from PayPal a couple months ago (I had my PayPal linked with my account). UCU denied the request because I didn't have enough money to cover it...usually not a big deal. I don't use the account too often anymore, so I didn't even notice the attempted charge. Got hit with 2 $35 NSF fees which put me with a negative balance. Then I was charged like $10 a week for having a negative balance. Since I don't really use the account I never noticed. I was depositing some money to the account through a different credit union (one of the perks of the credit union co-op) since I don't live in LA anymore and there was a problem. I opened up my UCU app and saw that I was negative about $150. CHECK THIS OUT...didn't get 1 phone call or letter the entire time. Not sure when and if they would have contacted me, but they charged me the negative balance fee for 2 months without informing me! I called to dispute it, and they would only credit off 1 of the $35 NSF fees and that's it. I got stuck paying the other $35 NSF fees and 2 months of negative balance fees and it wasn't my fault and I never received any notification from them. That's crazy! Drove to LA to close my account. The teller was super nice. I didn't realize that the $5 in your account that you need to keep in there isn't yours...they keep that. Maybe that's standard practice, but I didn't know that. I have been banking with a different CU for about 10 years which is bigger and better. Would probably choose UCU over BofA, but I'd recommend finding a different CU if you're able to. A week after closing my account, I got a generic letter from them saying that they're sad to see me go, but couldn't get a call or letter about the ongoing negative balance fees for over 2 months smh ‍
