Fat Hippo Newcastle - GF American Burger with Fries

Fat Hippo Newcastle seems to be one of the few restaurants in the city actually open past 9 pm,…read moreafter being turned away from half a dozen restaurants nearby that either had closed early or closed due to their timetabled opening hours, I decided to visit Fat Hippo. It is located just off Grey Street, head down the steps into the main restaurant area. I was looking for this place on my Apple Maps and did have some difficulty as the sign from outside isn't too noticeable. The staff seemed friendly and explained how most of the menu could be adapted to be gluten-free - I ended up going for the American Burger, on the menu this was described as "Double patty, American cheese, pickles, ketchup + American mustard. Includes a FREE SIDE of your choice!" I would have liked to see a wider variety of burgers on the menu, perhaps with some different and more exciting sauces - only the more premium burgers seemed to come with the Fat Hippo sauce or truffle mayo. With smashed burgers being in right now, I was surprised they didn't offer them on the menu here. My food was just OK, the fries were really skinny and a little too thin for my liking, but they were still seasoned well. My burger again was average, the meat was reasonably juicy for the type of patty used, the cheese was fine, the sauces were slightly cheap and it felt like it was overloaded around the edges, and not enough in the middle. The gluten-free bun wasn't too bad - certainly not the worst I've had but also not the best either. 3* - The food was average, if you're looking for a bite later into the evening in Newcastle, this is one of the few options, so for that it's good, I would be unlikely to return if other places were open nearby though but it's nice to have a reliable choice in the city if all else fails.

They have ONE person working the cash register and the tables upstairs and downstairs. That person is never hospitable or nice, but hey, I would be crabby and rude too, if i had to serve the whole cafe myself. They really should stop being cheap and hire a second person, or at least hire staff that can actually hack it. In general, I find vegans and vegan establishments really nice, down-to-earth, and always good to their patrons. Probably because us vegans/ vegetarians are a rare breed and we feel the need to look after one another. Scrumpy feels differently though, to be fair, they're not entirely vegan, but from what I have been told, they are the "vegan" place to eat in town. I would never come back here again. They give vegans/ vegetarians a bad name. Also, my hard earned cash should not be spent on establishments that don't appreciate my business and are super rude to me. I also know of other places in town that serves vegan friendly dishes, albeit they're not officially vegan.

The staff were friendly and very chilled and we all really enjoyed our food: my omlette was so tasty and filling, and my sister's hummus and fallafal plate went down a storm! I really liked this place as a whole but the reason I docked two stars was because of the really really bad quality of their drinks; I had the house wine which was nothing short of vinegar-esque, my sister had the "smoothie" which was nothing more than a half-filled glass of watery fruit juice with a thick layer of foam at the top, and our friend went for the milkshake which literally looked like a glass of milk that had been jiggled around for a bit (no trace of any ice cream in the mix) My advice with this place is go here when in search of good value, filling food, but don't waste your money on the beverages!..

Newcastle is a very small "city" in my humble opinion as a mega city girl from Toronto. It's very…read moresmall, and so different from my native Toronto in everyway. One of the few things I like about the UK is the cofeeshop/ cafe culture that we lack in North America. You don't see Starbucks at every corner, and if you know your coffee or adhere to your tastebuds, you will know that Starbucks coffee is only 'ok,' better than some Canadian/ US national brand *cough*Tim Hortons* cough * Dunkin Donuts* cough.* Here in the UK, each independently owned cafe is has its own style and serves really good quality food at a decent price, such as Chalk & Paper. I walk past this cafe often on my trips to Tesco or Olive Bean or Scrumpy Willow (I will never go here again!), so one day, after a disappointment at Scrumpy, I decided to give this place a shot. I instantly fell in love with their interior design: very mod, dark, with touches of green and wood to make it cozy and an attempt for the cafe to demonstrate that they pride themselves in healthy, maybe organic, good-for-you meals. I came here for soup, because English weather tends to be cold and wet in January, and to my delight, they had a vegan vegetable soup served with a choice of wheat or white bread. I love cafes when they give you an option to choose. Some cafes automatically give you white bread, and when they do, I try to avoid eating all of it cos white bread is not so good for you. The servers are super nice, they serve your food fast, although you have to get your own utensils from the side. There's also a discount for student and free wifi! I came back here for breakfast, granola with hot soymilk and berries. Simply amazing. Come here if you want good service, free wifi, good food and drinks at a reasonable cost. If you don't value any of those, Scrumpy Williow is just down the block.
