Ever since the sad departure of Barrio Comida, I've bemoaned the lack of good tacos in Newcastle. And in the whole of the UK, let's be real here. Happily, Chucho's fills the gap admirably, even if lacking slightly in some finesse. They have a cute little space at the end of the high street, just a few tables and stools as well as a takeaway option. You can also catch up with them at their By The River Brewing Company space, and at other markets and events. The menu is simple and small, but their little tacos pack a big punch. I think they do change their offerings occasionally. The meats are all well-marinated and well-cooked, and they do stuff a lot of fillings into the homemade corn tortillas. The service is quick and friendly, and they even made us a free baby taco for our son, who ended up covered in black beans. What's missing then? I think they don't have enough acid to counterbalance the rich meat. The flavour combinations aren't as creative as I'd have hoped. They offer big, fresh, meaty tacos but without the extra touches. My husband, it must be noted, disagrees with me and thinks that Chucho's are excellent, just not upscale. Maybe I'm being la-dee-da, but more fresh salsa, bright guacamole, sharp feta, tangy pickled onions - these things really make a taco great, and I'd like to see more of that here. Still, it's about ten times better than any taco shop on Shields Road has any right to be, so I completely commend them and I'm sure we'll be returning again soon! It more than satisfies a craving that any expat might have. read more
