To take…read moreon the responsibility of providing shelter and rescuing animals with very limited resources, that takes a big heart... although if you see how cute some of these animals are, who could resist?! Originally I had suggested to Mr. Snarky that we go play with some puppies to help relieve the stress caused by work. I remembered that there are some universities in the U.S. that are bring cute animals in right before exam time to help students relieve stress. So I thought it could work in this instance. Parking isn't a problem, but if you find all the parking on the road taken, we parked at Sainsbury's on our first visit (since we were going to pick up a couple of things after) and walked over. You could hear the dogs barking and there were a couple out in the play area. When we walked in, there were loads of pictures of animals that had been adopted. The lady behind the counter told us not to stick our fingers in the cages... so unfortunately no petting or cuddling with the animals. They have more dogs than cats (well at the time we went) and they seemed to be larger dogs. I only noticed this because we live in an apartment so we don't have a lot of room for a large dog, nor a yard of our own. However, there was one cutie who must have caught onto the 'no fingers in the cages' rule as she pushed herself up against the door to her pen so you didn't have to stick your fingers in the cage. Clever girl! And her eyes... oh those eyes. We went inside to look at the cats. At the time we thought they only had six cats as those were the only ones on display. There was a black kitten that was so loving and couldn't seem to get enough of Mr. Snarky. We had seen an ad for Suzie, a 3-year-old cat who had been at the shelter for about 13 months and couldn't seem to get adopted because she is a bit of a grouch. Mr. Snarky has a soft spot for these kinds of animals and was considering adopting her. We left and while we did not get the cuddle/play time I had been hoping for, we did succeed in starting a discussion about adopting a pet. On the next visit, one of the staff spent some time with us showing us the cats and talking about the characteristics of each one. Our original idea was to adopt Suzie, but also get a younger cat for some playfulness, but also knew that the staff would let us know what would be realistic. The staff member did tell us that Suzie wouldn't be good with another cat and the black cat that we were looking at had just been adopted. That's when the staff member told us about two pairs of siblings that were ready for adoption if we really wanted two cats. They were just being held in different areas because they didn't have enough room in that particular room. So we took a look at the first pair... two months old! The sisters (one black and one white) were curled up together in the midst of other cats pawing and meowing at us. There is a male cat (not sure if he has been adopted yet) but he is a brilliant, loving ball of fur and we nearly adopted him... you should go visit him. However, I may have fallen in love with the little white mustache on the black kitten of the pair. We then went upstairs to visit a brother and sister duo that were absolutely full of energy and if you have a fly problem, they will take care of it! The staff member did explain details about both sets of kittens so we could understand what we were getting into and make the best decision. Ultimately we went with the two-month old kittens. They chipped the kittens, fed them a bit of chicken, and filled out the paperwork for us. We also picked out some collars and tags which they engrave with your address and phone number... although these two are far too small to be wearing anything like that. The staff were so helpful and answered our questions and told us that the kittens have had their first set of vaccines and gave us a voucher to get them speyed at six months at their vet. They put all of their paperwork and records in a folder for safe keeping and also put a piece of the bedding that the kittens were sleeping on in the kennel to help with the transport. They also said they would give us a call in a week or two to see how things are going and told us to ring them or stop in if we have any questions or concerns. The kittens are now exploring their new home... don't worry, I will post some pictures :) You should definitely go and visit and they are in need of donations (bedding, food, money, etc.) and also volunteers to walk dogs.

Happily, I encountered no such problems at Tyrannosaurus Pets, an 'exotic' pet store that stocks lizards, snake and amphibians. Quite aside from having one of the best pet shop names ever, this shop is a credit to its trade with a shiny, modern shop floor; helpful, knowledgeable staff and - most importantly - spacious, clean vivariums filled with content animals. When I visited I was quite open about the fact I'd just come for a gawp, but the staff treated me as if I was a paying customer, and told me lots of stuff about the logistics of keeping lizards and snakes that I'd never heard before, despite pet shop loitering being something of a habit of mine. If you're thinking of buying an unusual pet or already own one and need to stock up on accessories, this is the only place you should need to go in Leeds.

This is also the biggest pet shop in County Road and one which has a decent variety of well looked after pets, accessories and food. The staff are always friendly and willing to help although at times you need to be patient before you get seen to, as it does get busy on occasions. If you are a lover of pets, this is a great place to come for a browse and be able to obtain tips and advice from knowledgeable staff. Personally, I have been to places that sell a wider variety of fish but if you're after reptiles or spiders for instance, then this is your Aladdin's cave!

I want to start by saying that this is a very hard review for me to write as I was…read moreso blown away by the amazing day I had I am struggling to put it into words. Yesterday I went for a venomous snake handling course after visiting the shop previously and learning about the service. The Unconventional Menagerie is an awesome place that rescues animals out of nothing but love in their hearts. They also aim to educate people about these incredible animals. Some of the animals they rescue were due to be destroyed or given up on, some were even considered 'impossible' to deal with but the UM took them in and not only have given them a new chance in life but an amazing quality of life in perfect setups. These animals are now lucky enough to be under the care of Christian and the UM staff who have more knowledge and experience about these species than anyone else I have ever known or seen (I have met a lot of rep keepers, shows, documentaries, books etc). They are truly passionate and dedicated to every individual under their care. ANYWAY THE SNAKE EXPERIENCE I arrived and met with Christian who explained to me the different safety procedures of keeping venomous reptiles from setups, the venom room and safety protocol. I own snakes but the feistiest thing I own is a hognose who is no comparison for who I would be meeting today. I have never used a snake hook before and it is safe to say I was a little nervous and excited. Christian very patiently taught me hook techniques and we practised on non-venomous snakes, I am not the quickest learner and my dexterity isn't great but I felt calm and learned very quickly under Christian's care. He is a fantastic teacher and I soon felt confident with my techniques whilst still having massive respect and caution around these snakes. I lost count of the snakes I met, they were all beautiful and amazing animals, I was told each one's history and what to expect, I was shown the ropes before handling each one. I met and interacted and held several rattlesnakes, spitting cobras, forest cobras, copperheads, sawscale vipers, true cobras, monocled, spectacled you name it. I met a gaboon viper and on some snakes, I was taught how to tube and pin them carefully. My dad and my partner were allowed to watch, take pictures (we even waited for a moment for a few to hood up so we good grab a good picture). I felt VERY safe and went from not having a clue to handling some feisty cobras within the course and with Christian's explanations and demonstrations I felt like I knew exactly what to do each step of the way. I also met a Caiman which I got to hold and saw a green mamba! The course is supposed to be 3 hours but Christian and the staff never made me feel rushed and we actually went over the time by at least an hour (It is hard to keep track of time when being surrounded by all these amazing animals). They even got out a few specific things I wanted to see that wasn't on the list and allowed me to go into the venom room and marvel at the animals before leaving (this was way past the course time I realised after I left). Yesterday beyond a doubt was one of THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE and the staff were so knowledgeable, friendly and patient I felt very safe and very happy. I am 100% going back and doing another course, the value for money is just insane when you think of all the time, money and knowledge not to mention the safety put in place for these sessions. Saying Christian and the staff went above and beyond is a true understatement and I can honestly not recommend this place enough. In a nutshell, if you want to do an experience, buy an animal or do anything with the UM don't think twice, Christian has been working with these animals since a kid as he was taught by family at a very young age and has been working with these animals since a very young age. The wealth of knowledge and experience Christian and the staff have can not be ignored, each animal and customer truly get the best care.
