Amazing Family Oriented Program!…read more As a military family it can be difficult to find programs and a place to call home for your kids but we found it here. Going here for over a year my kids both love this place and have grown so much. My oldest has done Taekwondo for years but this is an actual program dedicated to growing and developing kids of character: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. Unlike many programs this is an official and internationally recognized program taught by caring individuals that prioritize growth and standards over false senses of achievement. You have to earn your advancement (belts) every day. It's so amazing to have coaches that teach your children with love but accountability to a standard. The leaders also have a tournament team and truly love what they do because they travel at personal expense to coach our kids. The team also performs qualifying for AAU Nationals and many of them earning 1st Place at their tournaments. In 2023 AAU Nationals, the team won the most medals of any school in South Carolina and has already started planning for next year. So if you are looking to learn locally or compete nationally, this place does it all. Value: You can't beat it with this program meeting 3 days a week for 45 minutes and very reasonably priced after school care/camps when school is out. My kids have taken advantage of both evening classes and the camp program. Other activities in town that meet once a week cost more than the cost for both my kids taking evening class here. You do have to pay for the tests but it covers the new belt, boards they break, and registration with Kukkiwon in South Korea. If you stick it out, learn, and live a life of character, you can earn your black belt from the birthplace of Taekwondo. I don't have other martial arts instruction to really compare to, but in comparison of outlets and activities for our kids and as a family as a whole, this is a very good one. While going to those trampoline parks may be fun to go to, there isn't a whole lot that you take away unless you only wanted a diversion that was one-time or sporadic. Attending BT gives you and your family the opportunity to build your physical health, a development of character, and it's also a great way for families to spend time together. If you're looking for only that one-time or sporadic participation, this isn't for that. Like if you go on a diet, your goal may involve loosing weight or eating more healthy. If you engage in weight-training, your goal may be to build more muscle mass. None of those things can be done just once or twice, you need to stick with it before any results are obtained. If you decide to attend BT, Master Black has entire months planned out to in advance to train and educate all of his students, kids, juveniles, and adults alike, in building themselves on those different levels. It doesn't require the commitment of the entire taekwondo lifestyle, but the benefits of physical and character development last beyond the class. No trampoline park can do that. What I would have liked better is the physical building. I need higher-intensity work-outs and more often than what BT provides, so I work out extra on the side for that. Another downside is that there are only a few adults who participate (many parents do come by, but only their kids attend). So the variety of styles and opponents to spar with is limited. I do like that Master Black has a wealth of knowledge and experience with Taekwondo. He is friendly and also good with kids too (he is also a father, so he has that insight as well). Many of the students have been attending for years, working their way even up to Black Belt. So I'd rate a 4.5-5 stars, most especially because my kids enjoy it so much.

I heard that DeCorte MMA recently opened and was near their school. The owner Jason is the nicest and most genuine person. He is extremely knowledgeable in martial arts and is fantastic with the kids. I love that he has "mat time" with the kids, which are talks with the kids about behavior and what is the right thing to do in certain situations. I feel that this character building is very important and adds to the physical martial arts that they are learning. My sons love learning new things and this place keeps them busy. The class is at 5:30 which is great for me and my work schedule. There are also adult classes in the evening that I hear are awesome and a great work out. The Kyup (Kiai in Japanese) is a little weak since it's not coming from the diaphragm from the youtube videos I've seen over the past year in 2014/2015 so they can use a little work understanding where the breathing and spirit energy comes from when they deliver their forms. She is a wonderful example of someone who practices what they preach and does it at a high-level. Geer has legendary patience with the kids and respects where they are in their development and the pace at which they learn. She is masterful in knowing what the students needs are and in knowing the right time to push them or lead them gently to breakthroughs in their practice. Fun and games are part of every practice. Areas of emphasis include: self-discipline, body control, respect, best effort, sportsmanship and responsibility. My kids have been practicing at Low Country Karate for almost 3 years and I'm amazed at how much that program has enhanced their development.
