I always eat at SLA in Amsterdam, but I decided to go while in Utrecht, too…read more The friendly staff definitely make this location the best! I ordered the Mackerel salad with several substitutions for grains and I never felt rushed or like I was being difficult. The location is comfortable and cozy inside. I've had MANY of the signature and seasonal SLA salads over my trips to the Netherlands and the mackerel is the BEST I've ever had. The portion of protein was generous and the wasabi watercress lemon dressing was incredible. I always miss SLA when I am back in America, but now it'll be much harder after having had this delicious salad!

Thought I had reviewed SLA Voorstraat already, but here goes…read more.. The food at SLA is great and the hummus baby and mummy approved. Drinks are a bit limited, but not as limited as the space. In an already small space I don't think I'd ever build a huge bar that takes up at leastt half of wat very little space you have. Such a shame because it is great food. Luckily they've now opened SLA Nachtegaalstraat which is a much nicer, friendlier space. I don't usually feel comfortable coming to SLA Voorstraat because the servers seem a bit standoff-ish and whenever I have the pram with me it's pretty impossible to maneuver; getting to the toilet in the back is hell... Overall the vibe here isn't very welcoming, in fact it's quite cold so I definitely recommend walking a bit further towards the much more friendly and open SLA Nachtegaalstraat. Nachtegaalstraat is a great home base for anyone.

It's a nice place, we came here in the sunshine of the past few weeks. It's a lovely place to sit…read moreand they have a great terrace. Indoors also looked quite nice. They have their own bakery and are situated in a lovely old barn house with a big garden for some play time. The staff was nice enough. Food was good, but not through-the-roof special. We came for lunch. I had the tuna burger, our friends had salads, omelets and friend shrimp rolls. (what's the term for "kroketten" in English? Crockets?) It was good and tasty but not very special. We came back later for some drinks and the serving girls were a little rude to us. I asked if we could sit anywhere, and she'd say yes, even when a table was reserved. Her colleague appeared later and scolded us for sitting at a reserved table. I tried to explain that her colleague told us it was ok and made some joke about something and they both kind of reacted sour to us. Maybe they had a tough day, but hey, it wasn't our fault was it? And there was plenty of seating still left, we only wanted a drink and play a game, so we would be gone in time before dinner anyway. That kind of dampend the whole experience. I would like to try out their evening menu though. Hope the girls are a little more in a good mood that day ;) maybe pregnant ladies piss them off, I have no idea :D The play yard is nice though. They don't serve there, but they have a tiny take away place for ice scream and fries, which worked fine for us!

This place is solid. Our waiter sang us a song while we waited. Very busy place even on weeknights…read more Good service, good wines, very pleasant area. We had the private room on the side so I can't speak for the bar area.

Epic dining experience. Ambiance, staff, food- all…read moreperfectly on point. From the Edison bulbs in the window to the gorgeous tile under the bar, I knew from stepping into this warm curated space that my eyes, at the very least, were in for a feast. We came without a reservation on a very busy night (I'm guessing this is the go-to spot in town for great food) and waited at the bar for a few moments before being seated. Chatting with the young bartender was a fun prelude to a great experience with our waiter - who was quick to help us navigate a menu where EVERYTHING sounded amazing. Starters were a warm goat cheese appetizer (honey! Walnuts! Crispy bacon and oven roasted tomato!) and bacon-wrapped shrimp skewers. Salads for mains (the Mediterranean with juicy bits of pineapple, an unexpected flavor pairing and really nice, and the Grilled Shrimp Salad, in which the shrimp were perfectly smokey and juicy.) Yes, we like bacon. And shrimp. All of The Meats sounded amazing, but we caught sight of dessert served to a nearby table, and knew we needed to save room (a real need, a genuine priority, if you will.) The chocolate soufflé was quite close to a lava cake, and presentation was so completely artful that I would totally have snapped a pic if my spoon hadn't somehow been scraping the plate before I properly registered what was happening. We would go back tomorrow for another round but they are sadly closed on Monday- this place will DEFINITELY make my agenda next time I'm in town.

The only Greek restaurant we will eat at, at this point, is The Odyssey. The staff is friendly. The food is consistently great. The servings are generous and the price point is fair. The ambiance is lovely and I never feel rushed... My only complaint is their strange obsession with reservations. We have walked into an almost empty restaurant and been chastised for not having a reservation...given that this is Holland, I let it go. Everything else is great!
