On a last minute dinner adventure, we found Bratschall Manala on our evening walk in Kayserberg,…read moreand it was not a disappointment as it was a quick discovery along the cobblestone road! Small inside, it seated mostly French tourists from other parts of France, but I was happy there was a table two by the wall for us. Apparently, the restaurant also had some German influences as we noticed some German dishes listed on the menu. What we had: 1/2 F O I E G R A S S A L A D E : I really wanted foie gras so we split a salad that is now one of the best salads that I ever had. So simple and adorned with raw mushrooms, picked radish, squash, beets, apples, seeds, olives, fried bread, and of course, foie gras! It was so good for two and I linger for it to this day. Q U I C H E L O R R A I N E & S A L A D E : Cheesy, eggy, thick bacon, and too big for me, I just love real french quiche lorraine and I was happy I decided on it. Although I would have liked pomme frites, I wasn't sure if it was okay that I ask for it, but I noticed someone else had a quiche and had pomme frites. LA C H È V R E T A R T E : A big tarte nearly a size of a pizza, with cheese, thick bacon, and baby goat cheese on top. It was yummy too, but it tasted very similar to my quiche. So we made a mistake in ordering similar items but in different forms, but nonetheless, we both liked the restaurant for a quick last minute find in Kayserberg x

It turns out that everyone enjoyed eating here more than anyplace else on the visit to Strasbourg, including a couple of Michelin-star stops. The burger (topped with ham and cheese) was juicy, well-seasoned and delicious. It was served with very good fries and a fresh green salad. The steak tartare, served on top of crispy hash-brown potatoes, was met with high praise. In addition to main courses, the restaurant has a showcase of beautiful desserts. Due to time constraints, we did not stay for dessert. Service here is excellent. The food came out quickly, and the servers were extremely attentive. When we were ready to leave, they were quick with the bill. They seemed to understand that you may have limited time, so everything moved at a relatively fast pace.

On one memorable lunch, we shared a table with a couple from UK and a couple from Denmark and had a most enjoyable chat (in English) while eating fine French food. The history of There usually comes a time when we are visiting Europe (43 trips) when we get a yearning for something other than EU food, good as it is. When this urge hits, we have found these escapes: Chinese restaurants, a hamburger at the Holiday Inn Luxembourg, Blimpy's, and the Courte Paille chain in France. So, a couple times I have escaped EU cuisine for a day at the Chinese restaurant in Melk (from the Abbey, walk thru the town square, take the first right, and its on the corner of whatever street that is- and the road along the Danube). Decent Chinese food (clue: note the number of Orientals eating here ), decent service, and for EU, relatively low prices. I am pleased to be the first English speaker to review this wonderful gem of a restaurant. When I…read morefirst entered this restaurant, I felt that I had hit a true French restaurant. Unpretentious, (the name roughly translates to the "Table of the Market Salesman" friendly and warm, its all about having a good time. I very highly recommend this restaurant. Now, for some details . . . First thing you have to know, is that you must reserve a table in advance! This restaurant is very popular with the locals as well as the odd, well-informed tourist. I saw a few unhappy couples turned away due to the lack of space. The restaurant is truly a small gem and very much worth the visit if you can. The second thing you should know is that the hostess / owner / waitress, Isabelle speaks perfectly good English so language should not be a problem. Her partner, Marc resides mostly in the kitchen working his magic, but he did pop his head out from time to time to see that everything was all right. It was more than all right! Finally, what can I say about the food? My girlfriend had the appetizer of snails, and I had the appetizer of fois gras. The snails were amongst the best I ever had - and since the portion was abundant, served shelled and in a charming glass jar, my generous partner allowed me to sop up the remaining sauce after she had finished the actual escargot. Was it divine? It was divine. I'm a bit of a fois gras fanatic. It's hard to get here in the USA, and when you do, it's very pricey! At Isabelle and Marc's the fois gras was, literally, as good as it gets. It is served sautéed in a pan (not in a pate) with a wonderful side of fresh fig. I wholeheartedly recommend both these appetizers to anyone that wants an outstanding rendition of typical French fare. Our main courses were both wonderful and very memorable. Mari, in keeping with her non-meat preference had the fish, and I had the lamb. They were both wonderful!! Don't think that the French portions are small, we practically rolled out of the place and that's having split a dessert! One final counsel. . . if you can, have some of the eau de vie that they serve there. This is a very strong alcohol similar to vodka, but infused with whatever fruity thing they make with it. I had the pear and Mari had the apple. Wow! If you are familiar with these drinks, you will see that the quality of the eau de vie served here are truly outstanding. Overall, this was not just a great meal, it was a wonderful experience. Isabelle made us feel very much at home, like we were honored guests, not just tourists passing though. Everyone else at the restaurant was (at least) speaking French, and if you can read the French reviews, you will often see something to the effect that this is where the French go for their French food. Please go, and let me know what you think! Say "bonjour" to Isabelle and Marc for me!

This place was filled by 8:00 on a Tuesday night and no one looked ready to leave in less than two hours. When we entered just before 7:00 no other customers had yet arrived and most tables contained a "Reserved" sign. The gracious lady who seated us took the time to read the menu, including the specials, to us English-speaking folks. She even allowed us to sample two different Pinot Noir's so we got the one we both liked. Who even bothers to that nowadays?! My better half ordered the Escargots and the Cordon Bleu nature and I ordered the Spring Roll special and the L'onglet De Boeuf medium rare. Both starters arrived pippin' hot and were delicious. The American-sized entrees were as good as we have ever had. The potatoes, cauliflower, zucchini and carrots were amazing as were the shallots covering my perfectly cooked medium rare steak. It was an experience not just a meal. Though it took a bit of effort to find this fine gem in the Colmar maze, it was definitely worth it. Don't forget the reservation.

The apple tarte was so beyond perfection that I can't even find words to adequately describe the intensity of flavor. The second night we had the Menu 32E (47E with wine pairing). The crab tartare was lovely and the roast salmon, with slightly smoky flavor, was excellent. Both evenings started with an amuse bouche of warm asparagus soup with what was described as a coffee cream with nuts. It was delicious. The wine pairings were absolutely perfect as was the Cremant aperitif. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. Impeccably nuanced food, rich and yet not heavy, warm atmosphere, excellent service.

One of the best pieces of beef I've ever had that I did not prepare myself. Amazing really. The chef took me through the various options on display, all aged 30-60 days, sourced from select regions and producers. It was cooked to effin perfection and amazingly flavorful. It was not a thick cut, about an inch thick, but I knew how much I could enjoy. He weighed it at 330 grams, so 3/4 pound, boneless sirloin. Photo below. It was seasoned well, perhaps a tad too well, but I love salt so that works for me, and was rubbed with garlic and rosemary. I will say it again, delicious. However.... the wines offered, while varied and with many options, were not of the caliber of this meat. I tasted a number of options, with one of the servers, but really nothing fit the structure this meal required. Perhaps the saddest part however, were the sides of roasted potatoes and green beans... over cooked, mushy and completely flavorless. My wife had one of their signature tarts flambées, with "prosciutto and cornichon". So OK, they have their own idea, perhaps "house made?" Prosciutto, which was a very thick, chewy cut, of some cured meat, but nothing resembling what you might expect, and nothing so satisfying as the real DOP product. But the gravest insult was the giant, clearly imported, pickles they used instead of the artisan delicacy of tiny 1-2" crispy bites. Sure, I'm nit-picking, but again, right across the street is their Micheline two star! So, most travelers won't be disappointed, but just thought a few of you might like to know what to expect. If they had even ok sides I probably would have given four stars, but that, and the average service just left us feeling like this place is flying on the reputation more than the execution.
