Every time i have visited the Orkney Islands, I've visited Julia's. So thats saying something, to begin with. Additionally, everytime i've been on the islands, i've been more than once. I've had breakfast, lunch and 'just a coffee', more times than i can remember. Its the place we go for a quick coffee before a working day, or a quick coffee to end a working day. Or breakfast when we can't be bothered making stuff ourselves. Reasons? Well, its lovely. Its convenient. Its within shouting distance of the ferry terminal, making it a wonderful place to sit and watch the boats come in, or the passengers disembark (where we can then engage ourselves in some almost voyeuristic social commentary).
I won't say all the staff were particularly cheery, but in their defence it was the middle of Winter and therefore i can't imagine running a coffee shop on Orkney in the rain makes for a lively, happy environment. But the waitress herself was up for a gab, always good, and the purchasing element and the drinks was all good with no issues. The aforementioned breakfast was nice, if lacking in square sausage and instead presented with links, but i can forgive them that, i guess.
All in all, this will always always always be my first stop in Stromness, and even my first stop if i'm arriving in Kirkwall from Aberdeen. Theres only one cafe in the archipelago that beats it and thats the one up near the Brough of Birsay, so its hardly comparable. This is the town cafe of Orcadia to rule them all.
Cheers, Julia, and all your minions. read more
