Is this the best cafe in the world? Possibly. Discovered just after a hike around the striking Brough of Birsay, my brother (resident of Orkney) and I used this cafe for a chat about a future project, and then a year later used this cafe twice to not only film a scene for the aforementioned project (called The Pandora Men, keep an eye on YouTube) but then celebrate the wrapping of said project. It has a wide range of syrups for your coffees, a mouth watering selection of naughty-naughty cakes and a nice varied menu of sandwiches. But the real selling point is the view. It possesses, by far, the best view i have ever witnessed from a coffee shop window. With a few contenders, but for now, lets stick with this place.
Right over the beach across a spread of grassy saltmarsh, this place is a birdwatching haven. Not only can you sit with (provided) natty binoculars and view over 30 species of wading bird and seabird, but you can sip on a warm coffee in a warm room and not worry about the weather. In fact, with the view also encompassing the silver seas of north Orkney out into the unrelenting Atlantic Ocean, crashing storm weather makes for a dramatic landscape.
The staff are gloriously local; quick chit'chat or detailed discussion (depending on customer numbers and garralousness), always the homely welcome feel that just makes you want to stay longer.
Heavily recommended for anyone visiting the Orkney Islands. read more
